The Tracer of Blue Pegasus
The Fairy Tail mage would not have the chance to strike at Simmons with her initial attempts. Because of his momentum and the force of his Boosters, the red-clad man flew past Katherine as she deflected his attack. The spear head reared back from its sudden contact with the still buckler, throwing the Tracer mage off balance and into a horizontal spin as he flew past the female mage. Realizing his plight, he quickly deactivated his weapon and tucked in his body as he hit the patio with his body facing back toward Katherine; he rolled backwards to absorb the impact of his fall, finally setting himself upright by rolling up onto one knee. Using his left arm to steady his crouched body, he held out the other and recreated his spear in a flash of light.

Quote:

“What the hell kind of magic is that? I never saw anything like it!”

During the moment his attack was deflected, he was too caught up in his actions and thoughts to hear Katherine’s question; even if he was thinking straight, he would’ve kept the same silence he held while fighting Noel. It was a piece of advice someone once gave him: speaking during battle is a sin, for breath that is wasted conversing could be used to fuel a decisive blow. He didn’t think any less of Katherine and Noel for talking during their spar, as they were people who could afford such a luxury. Simmons, however, had taken the lesson to heart; indeed, the less time he spent conversing, the easier it was to keep his concentration steady on the struggle and maintaining his magic. Simmons always avoided conflict as much as possible partly for this reason, because when his mind went into a battle state, he would never get the chance to reason with his attackers until the fight ended.

The same thing was happening now, only on an unhealthy level. Simmons was cutting off all contact with the outside world, only focusing on the fight and the sound of his own voice.

“Eight years and still you’ve barely gained anything! What did you struggle for? What did HE die for?! You can manage to create weapons and bursts of energy, but what’s the purpose if you can’t even stand on equal ground to a 16 year old mage?! If you can’t manage any significant progress after 8 years….then…”

He saw Katherine dash at him with sword and shield in hand, ready to strike. Gripping his weapon, Simmons’ sprinted forward as well. He knew he would lose, he absolutely understood that fact; even if he truly had a chance at beating her, and the fact had been ingrained in his mind that he could never win. But he needed something…SOME confirmation of progress; he was desperate for it. Even if it was insignificant, even if it was painfully slow, any proof of progress or growth was better than nothing.

As he and Katherine were upon each other, he watched as the Ex-Quip mage swung her blade down at him. It was strange; unlike before, her movements seemed easier to follow, now that he was in the heat of battle; maybe it was his adrenaline, or his senses getting keener. Either way, it helped him to see the attack coming ahead of time, and he dropped his body into an instant crouch to avoid it. The blade sailed over the top of his head, slicing off unnoticeable bits of his red hair. The minute the blade passed, he jumped back up, using another Light Booster stream to jettison him straight up into the air. At the same time, he held out his right knee in an additional attempt to strike Katherine in the head as he sailed over her.

Whether she blocked or dodged, Simmons would use his booster to fly over and behind the Ex-Quip mage in a high-arcing flight. After boosting halfway through the arc, Simmons was sailing through the air upside down, looking back at Katherine as he fell. He took aim, held up his spear, and prepared to throw it as a white orb appeared on the blunt end of the weapon.

“I will not…” he barely whispered as he threw the spear.

The minute his hand released the weapon, the booster orb on the back of it was released. A stream of white energy rocketed forth, propelling the weapon with the same 800 lb thrust he used to jettison himself. With the spear’s size and weight by itself, however, the velocity in which it was fired was much greater when compared to his whole body. Almost like a beam of light, the weapon shot through the air toward the mage on the ground, screaming like a thunderous arrow.

Katherine wasn't expecting him to duck her attack. She wasn't completely surprised however, neither, After all, his only options were to block or dodge in some way or another. What better way than the crouch down and allow the weapon to sweep over your head? However, his next move was completely unexpected as he activated his Light Booster once more, rocketing himself into the air as he also aimed his knee for her jaw on his way up. The girl was knocked off balance as she draw back quickly to avoid the impact, rolling up into a ball as she flipped backward once before landing in a crouching position, her eyes glaring up at her airborn opponent as he flew over her head planning to launch an assault from behind. With him currently in the air, it'd be difficult for her to hit him at her current range. She'd need another strategy at this point; at least until he came down. Which would apparently be soon, as he wasn't really flying. He had rocketed off and was now free falling to the floor some ways behind her current position.

The sound of something swooshing through the air caused her to turn around quickly where she sat, her eyes widening as she saw the Spear rocketing toward her with incredible amounts of force. Uttering a curse under her breath, she quickly replaced her Buckler with her Tower Shield in yet another flash of light. Her entire body now glowing as she Requipped her Mail Armor. Now ducking behind the Tower Shield, she soon felt the full impact and force behind the Tracer's Spear. The impact pushed her back across the patio by several feet as she braced herself, trying to resist the force behind the attack. Unfortunately, the 800 lb thrust had managed to knock her back in such a way she rolled across the Patio at least 3 times before coming to a stop. She was starting to breathe heavily; mostly due to frustration over exhaustion. In an instant, she activated Blade Levitation upon her weapons. During her fall, she had lost her Long Sword; which was now lifting up from the ground on its own. During this phenomenon, her Cutlass and both Short Swords materialized in the air above her head, joining her now levitating Long Sword.

All four blades were then hurled telekinetically toward Simmons as he fell toward the ground from his flight. Most likely at least one blade would hit him. She wasn't aiming to kill him, as this was supposed to be a friendly training spar. However, the battle had become more heated than either Mages had initially planned. At least Noel was there and could break them up if it got too out of hand. After launching her blades toward Simmons, her Tower Shield fell to the ground with a loud clatter. Punching the floor hard with her fist, she gripped her fist once more as the Magic Circle appeared on the ground below her fist. Seemingly pulling it from out of the floor of Noel's patio, Katherine was now wielding a Broad Sword. Gripping it with both hands, she stood up and wasted no time dashing toward the redhead and delivering a heavy swing toward his ribcage with the flat end of the blade in order to avoid accidently slicing the boy in two.

The Tracer of Blue Pegasus
Simmons tucked in his body right before he hit the ground, rolling to absorb the impact yet again. As he rolled, however, a jolt of pain shot through his body and forced him to un-tuck out of his roll. He slid across the patio on his side, his body facing Katherine as it stopped. He realized immediately what the pain meant; his weapon has been unintentionally destroyed. His spear had connected with the Ex-quip mage’s shield and knocked her back; however, the sheer force with which it struck, coupled with the fact that it didn’t pierce the shield, forced the projected weapon to shatter. Shrapnel of white, crystallized magic flew in every direction before swiftly de-materializing into glowing wisps.

Simmons pushed himself up, breathing heavily from the sheer effort he had been putting out; after firing off several boosters, he was unable to re-use the ability until he generated more magic, or else he would exhaust himself. He was going all out, but there were some things he needed to conserve or else there would be no point. As he pushed himself up onto one knee, his eyes glanced back at Katherine, who had just jumped back out of her roll. Though he wasn’t thinking completely straight, he was at least a little surprised with how he was doing; he never thought he’d manage to knock the Ex-quip mage down with an attack. Still, he berated himself for not putting more thought into his spear’s solidity; otherwise it wouldn’t have shattered after the impact.

As she stood up, Katherine seemed to activate some kind of magic, because two more blades had appeared with the other two that were now floating into the air. Suddenly, they were hurled at him by an unseen force, rocketing across the patio in an attempt to pierce him. His mind panicked, preparing a counter assault of his own. It was an ability he recently developed during a tight situation, one that allowed him to strike multiple times at once if the entire attack hit: Booster Barrage. It was a straining technique, but one he had quickly become used to for the sake of its usefulness.

In this case, however, there was one problem…

“Four targets,” his mind panicked, “For targets moving to try and hit me. I’ve never used the technique to hit separate targets before, let alone multiple MOVING targets! And each shot only fires 4 objects; if I miss one, I’m done! Looks like if I want to be sure that I’m not hit, then-“

He needed to create more than four. He needed to have 8 at the least to be sure they would hit. It would strain him, but the attack seemed to excel when he was under strain.

Instantly concentrating, Simmons split his mind up even further than before, using the tracer to create 8 frames. To speed up the thought process, he decided to make all the objects simple brick shapes, only they were around the size of a short sword. This simplification made it easier for him to quickly frame and manifest the objects. Then, taking quick aim, he fired all eight off in rapid succession, each having half the force of his booster technique. Since he was not used to the sheer number of projectiles, not all of them had the desired level of accuracy. Two white bricks flew past the weapons, striking the patio near Katherine as she readied her sword and shield to rush in. However, the other 6 were fairly accurate in their launch. Four of the white bricks managed to strike each blade as they flew through the air, deflecting them off of their path and sending them spinning off to the side.

The other two bricks missed the weapons and flew through the barrage like the other two, but instead of hitting the patio and busting up its wooden surface, they were flying directly at Katherine as she began to charge.

A sudden jolt of pain shot through the Tracer mage’s mind, forcing him to grasp his head and grunt. He could feel a pulsating pressure start up, signaling the beginning of a headache. The level of concentration he used just to create that many objects for an instant assault pushed him beyond his normal limits, wearing on his mental endurance from the sheer effort. It was interesting to see how he could push past such limits in a tight situation, but every time he did, it was never pleasant...

The force from the impact had caught the Exquip off guard, however as she dropped her Shield she took notice to the fact his weapon had been destroyed. That may be the opening she was looking for as she charged toward him wielding her fairly heavy two-handed blade. However, Simmons activated his Booster Barrage this time, as opposed to the Light Booster he had used to knock her back in the last round. It would appear his skills were not something to laugh at.

The two Mages were in an equal match where anything could happen and anyone could win. And due to their present stalemate, there was an equal possibility for a draw. Unless one of them could turn this around. Katherine expected to be that one. However, two of the brick shaped objects smashed into the Patio, shattering the wood and forcing the Fairy Tail girl to leap backward. Looking up from the diversion, she noticed four more of those objects had smashed into her weapons, causing them to spiral in opposite directions, landing on the floor with a loud clang of metal on wood.

Growling lowly, Kitty glared at Simmons. This didn't bode well. He took out all of her weapons in one fel swoop. It was then she noticed it. There were two more 'bricks' remaining, and they were heading straight toward her. Eyes widening, all her weapons and her Shield vanished. Sent back into her Storage Dimension. Holding out her hands as if she were holding a pair of swords, Kitty shouted. "Yin Yang Blades!" and instantly, a black sword and a white sword materialized in her hands. Holding them in front of her in a cross shape, she awaited the Tracer's objects to make impact with her Blades. As they did, she force pushed her backward a few meters across the Patio.

Flinging her arms outward, she used each Sword to knock each Brick into object directions and away from herself. Once that obstacle was out of the way, despite her now fairly heavy breathing, Kitty dashed toward Simmons at full speed, her body. With both Yin and Yang prepared to strike their target, she swung them in two separate angles. One would slash from his left shoulder toward his right hip. The other in a straight line from right to left across his waist. She didn't intend to cause serious or lethal injury, however, so even if they did successful strike Simmons he'd recieve a thin cut, or be bashed by the flat side of the blade instead of the sharp edge.

After initiating that attack, rather it succeeded or not, she'd leap up into the air. "Requip!" Her body would then glow in that familiar light, her hair placed in a set of pigtails as her Armor was replaced with her Neko Armor. Using the feline mannerisms and grace granted to her by this Armor, she'd leap over Simmon's head, propelling herself off his back like she head done with Noel. Only this time, she land on all fours just behind him, spin back, and deliver a leg sweep in an attempt to knock the Mage off his feet.

The Tracer of Blue Pegasus
Simmons was somewhat surprised when Katherine summoned two more blades as the brick-like projectiles sped forth. The Tracer mage was almost certain that that she would either block both attacks with her shield or just dodge them entirely; even if they were fast attacks, the Ex-quip mage was probably fast enough to jump aside. He was even MORE surprised, however, when she blocked both of them with her blades and then proceeded to simultaneously knock each projectile aside. Then again, he realized that he shouldn’t be that surprised…

“Of COURSE two projectiles wouldn’t do it, you moron! For people like her and Noel, you’d probably have to fire all 8 to even get a solid hit in on them…”

After blocking his attack, Katherine dashed forward with both blades in hand. Simmons quickly got to his feet, still holding his head in as the pain began to recede. If he was used to it, he would be able to fire another round of eight projectiles, but he knew that the pain would only grow more intense and hurt his fighting capabilities. So instead, he opted for something simple; a basic sword. Simmons watched until his foe was about to attack, making sure to pay attention to the position of her hands and weapons to see how she would attack.

Once Katherine was upon him, she swung down with both blades, one diagonally and one horizontally. In that instant, Simmons brought up his hands and used his tracer to create a two handed blade; he held it upside down, with his right hand holding the handle at the top and his left bracing the flat edge of the blade below. The other two blades clashed against its glowing white surface, grinding against the blade while ultimately missing their target. The force of Katherine’s attacks pushed the Tracer mage back a slight bit, forcing him to re-adjust his footing so he didn’t trip. Quickly, he twisted the blade and brought it around, attempting to strike at the girl’s side.

The redhead’s blade swung through nothing, as Katherine had already leapt into the air and began to glow. Simmons hadn’t been paying too much attention to Katherine’s armor Ex-quip’s, since he was too busy burying himself into the battle and his own thoughts. In fact, he had no previous inclination as to what kind of armor she had, since he became lost in his own thoughts during the first sparing match that day. However, when the girl came back down, she was…mind bogglingly…wearing a blue and purple cat girl suit….

“Wait….WHAT?!”

During the entire battle thus far, there had been little that had caught Simmons’ attention; he was acting more on instinct and how to get past the girl’s defenses to care about what she had changed into. However, the dress she wore now was so…out of place, that he had no way of ignoring it and was forced to acknowledge its presence. Needless to say, the oddness of Katherine’s armor had caught Simmons completely by surprise.

She had landed and pounced off the back of his head, causing the Tracer mage to stumble forward. Quickly reminded of the battle, Simmons pushed back off the floor, twisted his body, and swung his blade down at Katherine once he saw the edge of her costume in sight. Unfortunately, Simmons was turning around from the opposite direction from where she was attempting to trip him, catching him in his blind spot.

Suddenly, the redheaded man felt his feet get pushed out from underneath him, and the world twisted sideways. With his blade arm already moving and with no way to stop it, the momentum from it and the trip caused the Harmon to lose his balance completely. With no way to brace himself, he landed front first, ending up flat out sprawled on the patio floor. The sudden impact forced the wind from his lungs, knocking the wind out of him. Even so, he attempted to quickly get back on his feet…

Her blades clashed into the two-handed Sword created by the Tracer Mage. As her blades grinded against the white glowing blade he now possessed, she could feel him slide back a few inches. Once their stalemate lock had broken, Katherine had leapt into the air a meer moment before Simmons swung his blade; the sword barely sweeping under her feet, grazing the bottom of her shoes lightly. As her Neko Armor was Requipped his reaction caused a smirk to spread across her face.

Her Armor wasn't intended for that purpose, but it seemed to prove a useful distraction in the eyes of most males. Typical. A guy couldn't resist a girl dressed in a sexy cosplay uniform. But this wasn't just for looks. It had its own uses; mainly the ability to make Kitty, well, cat like. In any case it definately matched its wearer's name, to say the least. And the distraction was just enough to get her behind him as she bounced off the back of his head, toppling him forward.

Simmons took a swing at her which left open his blind side, allowing her to perfectly execute her attack as the Tracer Mage fell flat on his face. His Blade glided over her head as the momeentum doubled up to both cause a miss as well as bring him down. Breathing heavily, she backflipped twice in order to separate herself from her opponent. Turning toward her redheaded foe, she watched him struggle to get to his feet. Reclaiming her battle stance, she looked toward a point just above Simmons' head as a dozen daggers materialized in the skies a few feet or so over his body.

"You fought well, Sims. I'm very impressed with your skills. But it's time to finish this!" In that moment, all 12 daggers were launched toward the Tracer from above. Not a one was set to seriously injure or kill the Blue Pegasus boy, however. Instead, the blades surrounded his body. Cutting it close, several blades had ripped into his clothing, pinning him to the ground where he lay. Slowly walking toward her opponent, and friend, Katherine stopped just in front of him so he'd see her feet and legs as he were to look at the girl.

Her body began to glow as her blades and armor were sent back into storage, and Katherine was now wearing a casual outfit once more. Smiling, she bent down to offer Simmons her hand. Once he had accepted, she would pull him to his feet. Grinning widely, she looked up at the now standing Tracer Mage while rubbing the back of her head in embarassment. Her personality totally shifting back to her friendly, playful attitude. "You had me going there for a while. I thought for sure I'd lose. You're a very tough Mage."

Making it to where he was on his knees, Simmons gazed up, his body stiffening when he saw a dozen daggers materialize into existence. They held there, hanging in the open air like dangling icicles on a house, just a shake away from falling and piercing the ground below.

They fired. They were so close that Simmons had no time to react; between his prone position and regaining his wind, there was no way to dodge the merciless projectiles. They fell all around him, ripping through his jacket and outlining his body as their steel tips were embedded into the patio’s wooden surface. None had struck him, but came frighteningly close to it. One dagger had even flown right past his ear, stabbing the floor right next to his shoulder blade. Simmons gazed at the dagger that nearly took off his ear with his mouth hung agape in shock.

He barely noticed as Katherine began to walk towards him, his mind buzzing at what he had seen. With the Ex-quip mage’s attack, the will to fight completely drained from Simmons’ body and the tension in his body evaporated. As his body slumped forward, he held out his arms to steady his kneeling form, his head hanging down and his eyes locked with the floor. There was no point in continuing the fight; Katherine had won. With a single move, she had shown him that there was no chance he could win. Simmons couldn’t bring himself to look up at Katherine, his self respect having been completely shot; where he had struggled to fire 8 projectiles, she had been able to fire a dozen without so much as batting an eyelash. He felt embarrassed, like she had shown him just how weak he was in comparison, that he was an idiot to think he even could make an inch of progress…

“But,” a sudden thought pierced his consciousness, “I did manage to move forward, right? Even if I can’t measure up to Noel or Katherine, I still managed to inch forward in my skills. It’s not much….but it’s something. I may be weak, useless, or even a burden…but at least I’m…”

“…not worthless,” came a hushed whisper as he looked up, seeing Katherine hold out her hand to him.

With a weak smile, Simmons grasped her hand, allowing her to pull him up to his feet.

"Please," he chuckled, looking weakly to the side, "I didn't even land one blow on you. There was never an option of winning from the beginning, with you nor Noel," he then looked at her, flashing a small smile, "But hey, I managed to move forward, even if just a little..."

Katherine must have caught part of his hushed whisper, for as the girl took Simmons' hand and pulled him to his feet she told him, "No one's worthless. Never let anyone tell you other wise. It'll only bring you down. Life is about having fun! Living to the fullest!" There it was. There was that cheerful, carefree nature that was hidden during their match. This was the real Katherine Keller. A happy, wild and sweet girl that no one could bring down. It was no one she had so many admirerers these days. She was sugar with a touch of spice. Gentle with an aroma of fiesty. She was whatever she wanted or needed to be at the moment she wanted or needed to be it. This girl was both predictable and unpredictable at the same time. But now that their training was over, what would the three do now? They could always talk. Compare strategies. Or just get to know each other as friends.

First things first, however. "Please," Her thoughts were interupted by a chuckle as Simmons spoke, "I didn't even land one blow on you. There was never an option of winning from the beginning, with you nor Noel," he had then flashed her a smile, "But hey, I managed to move forward, even if just a little..." To this, the young girl nodded once quickly returning the smile, "That's what matters, right? Improving! I'd say we all improved a little today! Well, all of us except Noel..." She looked toward the blonde with a cheeky grin, "He's already perfect."

Stretching and cracking her neck, the Exquip arched her back a moment. Snapping could be heard as she got her bones back into place after all that rigorous training. This was the best training session of her young life. She had made so awesome new friends and had learned so much. Walking toward the edge of the Patio, she took a seat on the top step, her eyes following up to meet Noel who had been watching their duel from a safe distance. "Thanks for letting us use your yard for our fights, Noel. I'm thirsty after all that training, though. Think it'd be okay if we maybe went inside?" She pointed over her shoulder toward the house, "Or you can just bring us some drinks out here while we sit around and talk."

Noel actually had to admit that he was a bit surprised by the final outcome of the battle that had been going on in front of his eyes. From the way the two mages were fighting each other fiercely, he had assumed it would end with a draw, but when Katherine Keller landed the final blow, defeating the Blue Pegasus mage, Noel widened his eyes as he jumped on his feet. "Woah.. That was one awesome battle..!" he exclaimed with a wide grin spreading across his face, as he neared the two teenagers, walking across the patio the two of them were fighting on until he stopped a few meters away from the two, now extending his hand towards Katherine, and then Simmons to congratulate them for the splendid performance.

Katherine's response made the young Fairy Tail mage giggle. "Don't say that, Kathy, you're making me blush.." True enough, a faint glimpse of redness crossed his otherwise pink-coloured cheeks as he said that. "No one's perfect.. And I've got much more to learn. In fact..." he said, now looking at Simmons, "... I've learned a lot just from watching your fight," he finished. He made one step closer to the older male, and he put his hand up, poking him in the chest, as he chuckled. "You could have won, mister," he told him, now removing his hand and looking up at him. The Tracer mage was slightly taller than him, so the younger boy had to glance up to look into his blue eyes.

"I've worked with Blue Pegasus mages before, and I know how they are.. They respect the laws and protect the innocent, and they would train day and night to master their magics only so that they would be able to protect the ones they love. They're loyal to their friends and they always keep their promises.. All of these are traits that all of the Blue Pegasus mages share, yet.. There's something it wouldn't hurt you to learn from us," he said, referring to the fairies. "You need to believe in yourself, Simmons. How can you ever strive for better tomorrow, if you do not hold that basic optimism in your heart..? How are you ever going to improve, if you're constantly limiting yourself.. with nothing more or less than your very own mindset?" he asked him. A small smile crossed his face.

"There's a great power sleeping within you, Simmons. Your magic is something beautiful. Something unique. Don't let it go to waste only because you feel like you cannot hold up to the intense training it requires from you to get better. You see.. That magic is like a new-born child. It requires your constant attention, your care and your love. By holding negative feelings, the magic inside you will react to it in the same manner, and it will never really evolve. You have to change your way of thinking a little bit, and then your magic will open up for you.. on its own. Let's drink now!" he would suddenly say, and he snapped with his fingers, as he muttered: "Astral Projection: Epsilon!"

Immediately, a figure shaped itself a meter or two away from Noel. The new presence, after completely forming itself out of thin air, didn't just have a striking resemblance to the one that had summoned it, but actually looked the same. Noel's copy bowed in front of him, and he said: "What can I do for you, Noel?" he asked. Noel smiled: "Epsilon, would you be so kind and bring the three of us some sodas?" The projection nodded and then bowed once again, before disappearing into the house. It didn't take it even five minutes until it already came out, carrying three glasses of fresh cold soda, with ice in it, as well as a straw, and a slice of lemon to give taste to the liquid. He gave each glass to every one of them, then he bowed once again and stepped to the side.

"No one's worthless. Never let anyone tell you other wise. It'll only bring you down. Life is about having fun! Living to the fullest!"

What Katherine spoke caught Simmons’ attention, and he gazed at her for what seemed to be a moment or two with a calm and nonjudgmental expression, as if to analyze a complicated math equation. Those words, “no one’s worthless”, were the same words ‘he’ spoke many years ago. It was the mantra that man held and desperately tried to get Simmons to feel the same way, to help the young Tracer mage understand that he always had worth, no matter what anyone else said. It was odd, yet comforting to hear the same thing from a young woman whom he’d only just met.

Even now, he could hear the echo of his mentor’s words.

“No one is worthless, Simmons. If anyone says otherwise, they deserve no less than a violent beating. Never let anyone get away with calling you worthless, not even yourself…”

Quote:

"That's what matters, right? Improving! I'd say we all improved a little today! Well, all of us except Noel...he's already perfect."

The Tracer chuckled as well, the pessimistic attitude finally beginning to leave him. Feelings of inadequacy still lingered in his chest, but even so, he kept his focus on one single fact; he had managed to gain a little more ground in his magic prowess. Even Katherine had confirmed that they had both improved after today's sparring. That small bit of praise, even if indirect, made Simmons' heart swell with pride. There was certainly something to be said for how effective compliments were to him.

As Noel stood up and spoke, Simmons stretched out his arms, listening to the young Fairy Tail mage's modest musings. The Blue Pegasus mage smiled at this; for as powerful and skilled as Noel was, he was not the least bit cocky in his abilities. He even admitted that he had a lot more to learn, which seemed like a terrible lie when one considered how powerful, fast, and talented he was. Still, it was good to hear that even people as powerful as him could act humble.

And then something caught the Tracer mage completely off guard....

"You could have won, mister,"

“Huh?” Simmons was surprised by Noel’s claim. What was the mage talking about, he wondered.

"I've worked with Blue Pegasus mages before, and I know how they are. They respect the laws and protect the innocent, and they would train day and night to master their magics only so that they would be able to protect the ones they love. They're loyal to their friends and they always keep their promises. All of these are traits that all of the Blue Pegasus mages share, yet… There's something it wouldn't hurt you to learn from us…You need to believe in yourself, Simmons. How can you ever strive for better tomorrow, if you do not hold that basic optimism in your heart..? How are you ever going to improve, if you're constantly limiting yourself…with nothing more or less than your very own mindset?"

Simmons was about to retort, denying Noel’s claim and expressing how he was always talentless…but he was unable to utter a single word in response. He was stumped by Noel’s words, yet at the same time they resonated with him in a way he never thought possible. Was it true what Noel said…that his own mindset was what his drawback was? It was true that he trained endlessly for the past 8 years, and he barely made any progress from it. He pushed his mind and body to their limits to master his magic, and he still wasn’t as far along as others were in their own magic. But as he looked back, as he remembered all the times he trained with his magic, he began to realize…

Not once was that small, nagging fear of inadequacy ever absent from his mind. It was so much a part of him, so small and subliminal, that it never truly occurred to him he was thinking it. But now, after Noel’s words and his experience during his spar with Katherine, he began to wonder if the Fairy Tail mage was right. But the fear was so small, so ambient, that it didn’t seem like it was enough to truly hold him back. But maybe that wasn’t all.

Did this feeling of inadequacy run deeper than he thought?

"There's a great power sleeping within you, Simmons. Your magic is something beautiful. Something unique. Don't let it go to waste only because you feel like you cannot hold up to the intense training it requires from you to get better. You see, that magic is like a new-born child. It requires your constant attention, your care and your love. By holding negative feelings, the magic inside you will react to it in the same manner, and it will never really evolve. You have to change your way of thinking a little bit, and then your magic will open up for you…on its own. Let’s drink now!”

As Noel walked off, Simmons stood there with a profound expression. The Tracer mage always thought that a person’s control over their magic was based on their will and natural talent; one part hard work and dedication, the other part luck. With such little ground gained after so much hard work, he always thought that he was just never born with the talent. But Noel’s idea…that it also relied on the user’s state of mind…it was something he had never considered before. Maybe it was time Simmons tried a new approach to learning his magic…

He took the drink from Noel’s copy, not even surprised anymore by the Fairy Tail mage’s abilities. Before he took a sip, however, there was one question he had to ask. He had never mentioned it before, so when Noel had brought it up, it was a little curious…

“Wait…how did you know I was a Blue Pegasus?”
