The Tracer of Blue Pegasus

"Did you just use Telepathy!?"

As SImmons continued to watch the fight unravel, he became captivated with the near surgical precision of Noel's strikes. At first he thought that it was pure and utter skill; Noel seemed to be doing so well that he wasn't using magic to help himself. Truely, this was a level of expertise Simmons wished to have one day; to be able to strike and react as if it were second nature. However, Kathrine's statement suddenly threw the redheaded mage for a loop. What did she mean when she said he had 'Telepathy'? Like he could read her mind? Noel was good, but the Tracer Mage doubted that he-

"Indeed I did.."

"Hold on," Simmons drew his attention away from the fight for a moment to think, "What the hell just happened? What are they talking about; did I miss something?"

The Tracer mage mistook what they were talking about as some sort of inside joke, or maybe it was just Kathrine's way of describing how good Noel was; it was as if he was reading her mind. He couldn't really believe that somebody could freely enter another persons mind or read their thoughts; the mind of an individual was a sacred, last haven for a person. It was the one place where all their beliefes and secrets would remain safe from outside hands. He thought Noel couldn't possibly have such an intrusive ability...

"Still," he thought, part of him not liking the indication of their words, "It's always best to play it safe."
And so, he continued to watch, analyzing the moves of both Noel and Kathrine with extreme interest. He was especially intrigued by the Ex-Quip mage's demonstration of her weapon control; by throwing it behind Noel and then changing its direction in an instant. He had heard that Ex-Quip mages inherit some kind of Telekinetic powers, which allowed them to control the weapons within their arsenal through mere thought; but that wasn't all that caught his attention. The blade that came at Noel from behind seemed to....curve around him. THe weapon just seemed to seep over his body and pass around, leaving him untouched as the weapon was deflected off of the girls buckler. THat REALLY got SImmons thinking, and he began to whisper to himself as the battle raged on...

"Innate shielding? No, it flew around him too smoothly instead of being deflected off? A warping of the fabric of space? Possibly, but seemed too unnatural...maybe just a shield of warped space-fabric..."

His mind was analyzing the situation, trying to come up with a viable explination for what had just occured. At the same time, he was ruling out the other possibilities, giving him a better chance of correctly guessing what his opponent was doing. THis was something that came naturally to the tracer mage; after many years of practicing his craft, he had built up an exceptional attention to detail (it was necessary to control so many strands of magical energy). WHenever he became seriously interested in something, or when the situation became serious, he would pour all of his mental energy into analyzing and understanding whatever stood before him. It had saved him from serious injury on occasion, and was his trump card in avoiding serious damage in a fight.

By watching the other two duke it out first, it would give him the chance he needed to prepare, mentally and physically, for an encounter with either of them. Personally, he preferred to fight Kathrine over Noel; she would still be able to kick his ass if she got heavily serious, but at least he would have a fighting chance in comparison to the walking embodiment of skill and power she was fighting. Losing was not something new to Simmons; most of his life, he had become used to performing less than how he was expected to perform. However, he could take losing as long as it helped him in some way....fighting Noel seemed to gurantee a quick and embarassing loss.....

She had used Blade Levitation to control and direct the route of her blade using telekinisis, however Noel had countered it with a trick of his own that Katherine hadn't expected but should have expected. Using what appeared to be his own Telekinisis he re-routed the course of her Cutlass, taking it out of her control and into his own in one swift moment that completely took her by surprise. She was moments away from Shield Bashing the Mind Mage, only to find her own blade turning on her and colliding into her Shield, leaving her in a moment of 'How in Fiore did he....? Did his Telekinisis just over rule my own!?' She wasn't about to let that stop her as she proceeded with her plan, hoping to at least take him down. Nope. He had leapt out of the way, and before she could turn around she felt his Quarterstaff bash into her back, knocking her into the floor. As she pushed herself onto her back Katherine saw him lunging at her again, his Quarterstaff spinning faster than a windmill which caused her eyes to widen in surprise by his speed and dexterity. She was already starting to feel the exertion from this battle; yet he seemed to be just fine. How was he so powerful?

Holding out her hand, she used Blade Levitation in order to draw her Cutlass back into her grasp where she wasted no time using it to block his Quarterstaff moments before it would have hit her in the ribs. As he leapt backwards away from her, her body began to glow as she quickly Requipped her Neko Armor now rolling backwards and away from Noel as he came at her again. Now on her feet, she saw him attempting to stab her with his Quarterstaff. Tail swishing, she awaited him to get close enough for her to execute her next attack. Once in range, she leapt over his head, using his back to propel herself as she flipped into the air, landing gracefully on her feet behind him. Spinning to face her opponent, she called forth her Short Swords, the blades flying toward Noel and circling around him. After a couple minutes of circling their prey like hungry sharks, the swords sliced in opposite directions across his chest and back.

At the same instant, Katherine dashed toward Noel with her brunette pigtails waving behind her like a pair of long brown flags blowing in the breeze, her Cutlass ready to strike him head on as she aimed a slash diagonally across his back or chest, depending on whether he turns around or not. After delivering her assault, she'd leap backwards and await his next move as she stood in her battle stance, tail swishing as her Short Swords levitated over her head. She was breathing noticably heavy as her chest heaved with each breath she took, and if one were to listen they'd find her heart had too picked up speed. She was over taken at this point by both exertion and adreneline. Only time would tell how much longer she could last in this brawl.

Standing on the other side of the platform, Noel held his quarterstaff in front of him as he watched the panting girl. In a matter of seconds, her body flashed as she ex-equipped, and when the mist around her finally subsided, Noel's eyes nearly fell out. "W-What..?!" he gasped, blood rushing into his face, as his eyes stopped on her bright blue and purple dress, before moving up to her kitty ears and then down to her tail. Blinking, the young Fairy Tail mage was dazzled only for a second or two, before he launched towards the mage girl once again. However, she was quick to dodge his stab, and used the momentum to leap over his head. In the next second, he felt the weight on his back as she pushed herself from him, the weight being lifted just a moment after that. He heard a small thud as she landed on the floor behind him and he swiftly turned around, still holding his quarterstaff in front of him. In a matter of moments, she called forth her blades, the short swords beginning to circle around the boy as if they were waiting for her to snap with her fingers and send them at him all at once.

A small smile crossed the boy's face as he watched the floating swords around him, but he was only looking at them from the corners of his eyes while he kept his gaze on Katherine. He knew she was going to send the blades at him once she was ready. He also knew that he could easily stop all of them at once with Telekinesis. Nonetheless, when she finally sent her numerous blades at the boy, he didn't lift up his hand to stop them with his Mind magic. Instead, all she would be able to see was a swift movement of his quarterstaff as he turned around, deflecting blade after blade in such a quick manner that all of it had stopped almost a moment after it had started. The blades fell down on the floor a second later, the clingy sound echoing throughout the air as the short swords touched the ground. But the boy didn't waste his time to look down, knowing that she would come in for an attack. As she moved in to slice at his chest, it was as if he knew exactly where she was going to slice her weapon. With a small side step to the side, Noel avoided the deadly slice, which went through the air right next to him, and in that single moment, he could have attacked her while she was still slicing at him.

However, he had instead leapt backwards at the same time as she had, so that he was now standing right next to her. It would have probably taken her a second to realize just what had happened, but Noel didn't intend to give her that much time. In a single swift motion, the boy kicked towards her to send her flying on the ground. "It's time to end this," he said, and in a single moment, he followed after her pointing his hands at the girl. A small orange glow enveloped around his hands as a magical circle appeared beneath his feet, and then, he said: "Mind Blast!" His signature technique, the offensive Mind Blast, erupted from his hands and flew towards the girl. The almost transparent blast was rather fast as it flew through the air, and since she was rather close, she would hardly have any time to dodge. Nonetheless, while he could fired the strongest blast, he put a little less magical energy into it, so that she'd only be knocked back a bit and felt a strong headache if she got hit. Still, the blast was a bit stronger than his weakest blast would have been, mostly because he also didn't want to go easy on her.. After all, that was what she wanted, no?

Katherine was already charging toward Noel, her eyes widening in surprise as he knocked both of her Short Swords to the ground with only his Quarterstaff. Just how powerful was this boy to defeat her so easily without even using his Magic? He was super fast and super strong. He was almost not human, which gave her doubts even about that. She was slightly injured and her chest was heaving from exhaustion. And yet, there stood Noel. Untouched by any of her efforts, and clearly not even close to tired. It was almost as though she was no more than a flying he was swatting at. She was completely unable to touch him, and yet he got several blows on her already. It was driving her crazy! She wanted to at least get one hit on him. And she wasn't giving up until she succeeded in her goal! He may have taken out her Short Swords, but he wasn't going to stop her strike. Or so she thought, as at that moment he side stepped causing her to miss completely. Her eyes glanced at him, several drops of sweat rolling down her forehead as she half expected him to strike her. However, he chose not to.

From there, she immediately leapt backward to distance herself from him. However, upon doing so she realized he wasn't standing there anymore! Looking toward her left, she realized he was standing next to her. He had jumped backward at the same time as her, and landed right beside her position. It was as if he knew her every move before she performed it. Had he been using his Mind Magic all along? Had he been reading her mind through this entire battle? She had less than a second to process what had just happened, for in the next moment she felt him kick her. As she tumbled across the floor from the blow, she soon heard Noel say in a more serious sounding tone, "It's time to end this," and as he uttered those words, she rolled over in time to see him raise his hands. As his palms pointed in her diraction, she saw an orange glow forming within his hands. Her eyes widened. It was too late to do anything now. Sitting up a bit, she scooted backward slowly, the exhertion of their battle setting in as her adrenaline rush faded. Then it happened.

Noel shouted the name of his attack; Mind Blast. As the attack hurled toward the girl at incredible speed, she had no time to think nor react. It was too close to her, she'd never be able to move in time. As the blast struck her, she let out a scream of pain as her body went tumbling several feet across the ground where she landed on her side, her back toward Noel. Her scream wasn't simply from the blast itself, but from the headache in which the blast had induced upon her. As she lay helpless on the floor, totally defeated by the much more powerful male, her weapons which lay abandoned on the ground vanished. Shortly after that, her Neko Armor disappeared in a flash of light leaving the girl laying on the ground in her previous clothing. As she rested in her weakened state, groaning softly from her still pounding headache, her back and shoulders could be seen heaving with each heavy inhale and exhale. She had lost, plain and simple. Of course, that was expected from the moment she challenged Noel Aramis, no?

The Tracer of Blue Pegasus
(OK, sorry It's been so long for me to post, but between working on the EXE reboot, getting tired of Tenken dragging out our topic, and you guys sparsly posting, I haven't been on the site much. Also, excuse the sparsness of the post, but I'm having writers block for my character right now...)

Simmons had been watching the fight as the two fighters struck back and forth at one another. It was impressive to watch Kathrine attack with her sword techniques and Ex-Quip magic; it was even MORE impressive watching how Noel easily parried each blow and countered with his own attacks and techniques. Simmons was truely watching two skilled mages fight at the pinacle of their talents, and they were over 5 years younger than him.

"And there's that twinge again,"he thought, trying to supress his jealousy for the two.

It was an alien feeling to him, and he didn't like it. Yet, recently he had meet mages who were much younger than him, yet more talented in their magic. First it was Adrianna, with her Takeover magic, and now it was Noel and Kathrine with power and skill he'd only seen once before.. It was like they were born with great control over over their magic, born with magic that was easy and practical to control. They were born gifted; but he was born cursed.

"Why is it always like this," he thought, getting lost in the darker part of his mind, "8 years....8 years I've traveled, trained, and put forth every ounce of mental strain to get to where I am, and yet I'm STILL behind even those who are younger than me. No matter what I do, no matter how much I try, I'm always the lowest on the totem pole. My broth-....the Harmons always had the talent...where I could barely pull out one Tracer....."

As he was drawn deeper into his thoughts, he grit his teeth as the self loathing began to burrow itself deeper into his chest.

"Is it always gonna be like this? Am I always going to be behind everyone else...without talent, without skill? Witho-"

A scream ripped him from his thoughts. As his eyes flicked up, he saw the limp body of Kathrine fly across his vision. She hit the ground and tumbled, finally resting on her side with her back turned to them. For a moment, SImmons was completely stunned, unable to even think straight. What had just happened? Why was she flying through the air? And why wasn't she getting up?

And then she groaned. And all the thoughts in Simmons head left save for one; she was in pain. Something inside him, something he vaguely rememberd feeling around Adrianna. A feeling of worry and concern for another persons well being exploded in the pit of his chest. If there was one thing that could be said about Simmons, it was that he worried about others more than himself. He barely even knew the girl, but to see her tossed aside like a puppet with their strings detatched.....it set something off in him.

Without hesitation, he jumped forward, racing toward Kathrine's prone form on the ground. He ran around her, kneeled down, and put a gentle hand on her shoulder, giving her a very light shake. If she was too hurt, he didn't want to cause her any more damage.

"Hey, hey...are you alright?" His voice was filled with concern as he spoke softly.

OoC: No problem, Simmons, we've all been kinda busy..

Just like it was to be expected, the blast hit the poor girl, sending her flying for a couple of meters backwards until she landed on the floor with a thud, letting out a scream. Immediately afterwards, Simmons snapped out of his day-dreaming and looked up, quickly running to the girl on the floor and kneeling next to her, his face showing concern as he gently called out to her, shaking her shoulders. For a few moments, Noel remained where he was, but then he also walked over to where the younger girl had earlier collapsed, kneeling down next to her and Simmons.

He looked at the girl, who was breathing sharply, obviously fatigued from the battle and the injuries she had gotten in it, though none of them seemed too serious. Noel knew that the worst was the headache she had gotten after getting hit by the Mind Blast, which wasn't exactly one of his weakest spells, even though he had intentionally not attacked her with full force. "The effect of it should run off after about half an hour or so.. It should be a bit better then," he said, honestly hoping that she was ok.

Once Simmons finally managed to wake the girl up by shaking her softly, Noel extended his hand towards her in order to help her up on her feet. ”I hope you’re okay,” he said sincerely, an apologizing smile crossing his face as he did. He could see that she was still in pain, which wasn’t just the result of the headache but also the fact she had been thrown across the platform, and had landed several meters away from her original spot rather roughly.

”I didn’t want to go too easy on you.. I figured you wouldn’t have liked that,” the boy said. He had gotten a feeling that Katherine wasn’t the type of person who would put up with someone underestimating her. And she really was not to be taken lightly; even though he had defeated her without too much trouble which was to be expected, the fact remained that she had put up a splendid fight.

Not just that she had endured the battle for quite long, she had also launched several rather successful counter-attacks, which had despite the boy’s reaction speed, proved to be rather challenging to dodge for Noel. ”You’ve done a really good job,” Noel praised her once she had caught her breath. ”It’s been a long time since I’ve had this much fun in a fight! Your skills truly are remarkable,” he said enthusiastically, a wide grin spreading across his face. ”You really are a true Fairy Tail mage.. Say, where’s your tattoo placed?”

As he was talking to her casually like that, he glanced towards Simmons once or twice, his Sixth sense having noticed the rather melancholic thoughts that were going on in young Tracer’s head. He felt a bit uneasy, seeing his new friend so discouraged, especially because he kind of knew why Simmons felt that way. Yet, he doubted the older boy would have been too happy if he had mentioned that in front of Katherine, or anyone for that matter, and as such Noel remained quiet, suppressing his urge to try and help him by talking to him, at least for now..

The Tracer of Blue Pegasus
She was out like a light, that much was certain. Even though he moved Kathrine gently, she barely registered his movements with any sound. He wasn't sure just how badly injured she was; after all, she was tossed across the patio like a ragdoll and hit the ground pretty hard, giving the young Harmon a fearful thought about the possibility of her breaking something. Thankfully though, she was breathing, and to his trained eyes, it didn't seem like her body had sustained any other injury other than....

"Wait," he thought, "Where is the injury?"

In the few seconds he hung over her body worriedly, he had scanned every visible inch of Kathrine's body; from what he saw, there was no visible damage that had been done to her to cause her to fly so roughly. That was the part that didn't make sense at all. With the amount of force that should have been used to hit her, why did he not see any visible indication of the brute strike? It was frusteratingly curious, since he knew of nothing that could create such little damage.

From what he could guess, it was probably more of an internal strike than any-

"Youdon'tbelonghere..." suddenly, a burst of mental hostility was unleashed from Simmons' mind, directed toward some unknown target. As soon as it had errupted, it was gone.

"Huh?"

Something caught his attention....something on the edge of his mind....something that his own thoughts reacted to before he could register it. He couldn't quite place it at first, since his mind reacted so suddenly to it; however, as he concentrated, he found what had caused such a mental reaction. There was something probing around at the outer part of his mind. It seemed to be feeling around; it was like a finger gently poking at the surface of a blown up balloon. It wasn't actively invading, yet at the same time, it was partly intrusive. But where was it coming from? How could he feel it? And why did his mind react so fast?

And that's when realization suddenly hit him; what Kathrine had mentioned before during the battle, how the sword had curved around Noel's body, the words Noel spoke right before he sent Kathrine flying, and now the strange probing sensation in the back of his mind. At first, it didn't make sense and didn't seem possible at all; however, in the end this was still a world filled with magic, and that meant that anything was possible.

Even reading minds...

Simmons gently picked Kathrine up, making sure that he didn't drop her accidentally. He placed one arm under her back shoulders, and the other one right under her knees, lifting her up so that she was still realatively laying back, but now at more of an angle. The Tracer Mage was moving her to a more 'out of the way' location. Noel was still there, and now the young Ex-quip mage was out like a light; it was expected when two mages of different power fought each other. He walked over to one of the lawn charis, carefully taking each step down the patio stairs so as to not lose his balance. Once he reached the chair, he gently laid the young girl down and positioned her comfortably, if she woke up before they were finished with their match.

After making sure she wouldn't somehow roll off the chair by accident, he turned back around, and slowly walked back up the steps of the patio. As he did, he looked up at Noel, giving him a reassuring smile as he did so.

"She's out like a light," he said bluntly, "She's alright, but whatever you hit her with must have been one doozy of a technique if it did that without causing any physical damage."

He reached the patio level, and began walking toward the middle of the makeshift battle ground.

"It's funny," he continued, his smile growing a little smaller, "Just a moment ago, I got this odd feeling. There was no clear reason for it, but none the less, it was something I couldn't shake. You know, like that feeling you get when someone's watching you?" His smiled lessened even more, "Only it felt as if someone was probing at the outside of my mind; like feeling around for something along the surface of a filled balloon."

He stopped several meters away from Noel, and when he did, his smile completely dissapeared. He was not frowning, however, nor glaring or giving off any other negative feelings toward the young mage. Instead, his face held a solemn expression, one of calm clarity and quizzical in nature. His eyes locked with Noel's; his blue orbs shined clearly as they assessed the Mind Mage carefully, searching for some sort of answer.

"Telekenesis that Kathrine mentioned, the sword, Mind Blast, that feeling in the back of my head....at first I didn't think it was possible, like it was some kind of strange joke. But I should have known better than that," he looked down, smiling ironically to himself, "After all, we live in a world of magic, so anything is possible. Still, the idea kind of unnerved me, so I guess I denied it..."

He glanced back up at Noel, returning to his clear and solemn expression. If there was one thing that could be said about Simmons Harmon, it would be that he was a studious individual. The tiniest hints that he found gave him more knoledge to a puzzle than it would to many other human beings. After constantly stretching his mind to human limits to master his magic, it became easier for him to pick out subtle clues that others wouldn't notice, and even more so to put it all together.

"You have the ability to warp the world around you and read thoughts with your mind, am I correct?"

As it was happening absent-mindedly, Noel didn't even realize his magical power was subconsciously prodding at the outer part of Simmons' mind until he felt a rather hostile, yet more of a protective kind of thought which was trying to push him out of the way. That rather surprised the younger mage, since he wasn't used to other people being able to sense even the weakest of his passive abilities. Most of the time, due to the strength of his spell, people weren't aware of it even if he was consciously entering it, but to be able to sense it just like that, when he wasn't even aware of it..

He glanced towards Simmons, and the expression on his face was enough for the boy to realize that the Tracer mage had sensed his passive ability. That thoughtful, thinking expression made the boy want to find out just what was going on in his head, but he quickly reminded himself that it wasn't nice to bash into other people's minds as they were one private spot they could always return to. Since he often forgot about the morals, it was Buster who would remind him not to break into people's minds just like that without even thinking, but the snowy-white owl wasn't there all the time. Because of that, it had happened more than once already that he dove into the depths of someone's mind and did something he had later regretted, though it didn't seem like he learned it.

Snapping out of his thoughts when the older boy spoke, Noel glanced towards Katherine when she had been mentioned. "Yeah. She'll be fine after she wakes up," Noel said simply. He usually didn't like to use his magic when he was fighting someone, whether it was an enemy or just a friend he was training with. One could argue it was because his spells were quite powerful, but that wasn't the true reason. Even since he had gotten strong and quick enough to be able to beat most of weaker mages with nothing but his fists, he was refraining from using too much of his magic, simply because he didn't want people to see it.

There were people in his guild, who were even stronger than him, and some of them liked to brag about their abilities, not just in front of their guild mates but also whenever they fought against enemies on their missions. The knowledge about their abilities quickly got widely-known throughout the kingdom, and so it happened that they were ambushed by the dark guild mages, who had carefully planned traps for them, taking into consideration their weaknesses. Noel didn't think he was strong enough yet to perk the interest of those who hid in shadows, but he still liked to be careful. He may have been a bit naive, but he was also a bit paranoid at times, and that was why he seldom spoke outright about his abilities, especially if it was to people he hardly knew.

He was listening to Simmons' explanation of the feeling he had felt with a mostly expressionless face. Once the other boy was done sharing the feelings he sensed when Noel's subconsciousness touched his, he stepped from one foot to another uncomfortably, fiddling with the side of his shirt. "I can't help that, it's not something I can control. It's a surprise you even felt it, though. Most of people don't," he said, as he looked up, his eyes stopping on Simmons' for just a moment before they dropped to Katherine, whose chest was heaving up and down slowly as she breathed soundlessly.

Continuing to listen to what Simmons had to say, Noel was quiet for a few moments after he was done talking. "You're half-right," Noel said after a while, once he finally looked up at Simmons, not presenting any more explanations. A small smile crossed his face. "Now, I suppose you wanted to fight me, too?" he asked.

Katherine wasn't completely knocked out, per say, so much as she was resting with quite a headache courtesy of Mind Blast. As she felt Simmon's hand gently touch her shoulder she allowed herself to roll over slightly so as to look up at him. However, she could barely open her eyes as the sunlight only provoked her headache that much more. "Hey, hey...are you alright?" She had heard Simmons' voice speak, which caused her to respond in a gentle groan. Bright lights and talking wasn't helping her headache any one bit, and she just wanted to rest in peace and quiet until it subsided. Her hand slowly moved toward her forehead where it swept under her bangs to rest against her flesh. She heaved mildly heavy breaths as she was somewhat exhausted from all the movement that was required of her in order to face a boy with the abilities Noel had. He was skilled, to say the least, even without using his Magic. However she could see now that from the moment she laid eyes on this boy, she never stood a chance against him in combat. It made her all the more grateful that he was a friend and not an enemy. The blonde soon approached his female Guildmate, offering her his hand as he said, ”I hope you’re okay,” to which she nodded once, taking his hand and allowing the Mind Mage to pull her into a sitting position. She was just too tired to stand up, her legs felt like jello when she even attempted to do so. She just needed to rest, then she'd be fine again.

”It’s been a long time since I’ve had this much fun in a fight! Your skills truly are remarkable,” Noel had said enthusiastically, a wide grin spreading across his face, the likes of which was shared with his female companion as she looked up at him with her eyes shut. ”You really are a true Fairy Tail mage.. Say, where’s your tattoo placed?” As he asked about her Guild Tattoo, Katherine revealed her left shoulder to the boy where a blue Fairy Tail tattoo had been magically stamped into place for all to see. Her head was still pounding from the earlier attack, which resulted in the girl allowing her body to drop backwards. She just wanted to rest, that was all. Noel praising her made the young girl feel very proud, and despite her loss she felt somehow acomplished. She never reached the floor as she dropped back, however, for the next thing she felt was an arm behind her back, soon followed by an arm scooping up beneathe her knees. Looking up, she saw Simmons was scooping her into his arms.

As he carried her off the patio gently, she allowed herself to rest quietly in his arms up until she felt him lay her body down on a lawn chair. Once she was seated comfortably courtesy of the gentleman known as Simmons, she opened her eyes ever so slightly so as to watch him walk the steps and approach the younger male. As the boys faced off she could barely make out the words they exchanged as her head was still pounding just enough to make her feel a bit sick. She'd relax on the chair until her headache subsided, and once Noel and Simmons were finished fighting, she'd give Simmons a chance to recover; and then take him on herself. This was going to be interesting, indeed.

"I can't help that, it's not something I can control. It's a surprise you even felt it, though. Most of people don't,"

"Hmm..."

Simmons gave Noel a curious glance before nodding in reply. He crossed his arms, closing his eyes and lowering his head in thought. Though Simmons had no experience with mind readers or the like, he had to admit that what happened was strange. Not because he could feel Noel's proding presence, but because his mind had reacted with such hostility and quickness; it was almost instantanious, and right before Simmons himself would have picked up on it. It unnerved him that his mind was reacting to something without his overall control, but at the same time it was nice to know that he had some kind of defense against such powers.

"I guess I can understand," he spoke, "Something that powerful that's based off of your own thought can be a handful. Even so, it's a dangerous power for anyone to have, so I'm not going to say it doesn't unnerve me. Still, you seem like a decent person, and I'm sorry my mind snapped at you with such hostility; but it was more of a defense than an attack."

Looking back up, he gave Noel a sheepish look

"I'll admit, I didn't expect my subconcious to react so viciously and quickly....maybe I have a split personality or something that's more aware than I am..."

At that, he grinned and chuckled at his own rediculous joke.

Though he didn't realize it, Simmons was amazingly self-aware of his mind and body, a side effect of relentlessly training to master the Transcendant Tracer. The magic itself was difficult to master, since it required one's attention and control to be split amongst multiple small magical tethers and then shape them into the desired form before filling it with physical magic energy. Keeping one's attention and control focused on so many tethers at once forced the redheaded mage to push his mind to its limits and beyond. After spending such a long time tempering his concentration with a broader range and strength, he inadvertently gained a hightened sense of his own mind and body.

Things that most people would consider alien to themselves, yet couldn't sense it, he could feel and identify. In a way, he wasn't only mastering his magic, but his own reality as well.

"Now, I suppose you wanted to fight me, too?"

Finally uncrossing his arms and lowering them to his sides, Simmons nodded in reply. His expression then completely changed. Before, Simmons had the look of a kindhearted young man, with a soft smile, a calm voice, and eyes filled with curiosity and warmth. When his look changed, it was like he was a completely different person; his face was tight and jagged, with piercing, cold eyes. The expression was not one of hate or anger, but of an unusually steely seriousness. Without words, his look alone was able to translate what he was thinking; he knew who he was fighting and that he didn't, no, shouldn't hold back anything. If Noel was a real enemy, he wouldn't stand a chance; that's why he had to take this fight as seriously as possible. It would better his chances of staying alive if he ever faced such a foe.

When he spoke, his voice was only a little different; it was calm and without hostility like before, but now filled with an underlying, intense coldness.

"You may start."

He was already creating the grid-like shapes in his mind, preparing himself for whatever Noel fired at him.
