The case for and against Euthanasia has been explored many times in many ways. Hippocrates, the father of many medical practices, created the Hippocratic Oath. An oath with many medical ethics to it. Like today, he was also faced with the problem of whether euthanasia was right or not. The word itself is derived of Greek origins and literally means,"good (eu), deat(Thanatos)". Hippocrates' oath states,"to abstain from doing harm" is a duty of the doctor. Likewise in his Corpus, Hippocrates states that,"The physician must...have two special objects in view with regard to disease, namely, to do good or to do no harm". Therefore Hippocrates had early on decided Euthanasia is wrong. I myself believe that euthanasia is wrong for a couple more reasons, but want to hear some opinions about why it might be right. |

I just think its good to have as an option, if i was terminally ill with no chance of recover and gonna suffer until i died i rather die than live since i dont really consider lying immobile in a hospital bed waiting to die "living". |

All this is my opinion of course, so words like "should" or "is", usually definite and factual, are not completely so. They are not necessarily right nor wrong. I just don't want to have to right "I think" or "In my opinion" throughout this~ _______________ It's justifiable in cases where it's absolutely necessary. Cases wherein it is not absolutely necessary would be things such as depression, a temporary injury, etc., basically things that are curable. Going with the definition provided by thefreedictionary, which is "The act or practice of ending the life of an individual suffering from a terminal illness or an incurable condition, as by lethal injection or the suspension of extraordinary medical treatment" it's right to do so. This is NOT to be decided by the physician. Assuming one has a condition falling under the above definition and is lucid (if only barely so), if they decide that is the only way to go, then it is their choice. Now, one of the bigger problems is when the person is not lucid, such as the case of a coma. A friend of mine recently passed wherein she was left comatose. The doctors found that there was a 1% chance of her recovering to the point where she would be able to function, and only singular parts of her body would function. The other 99% chance, this 100% total being assumed that she was to make it through at all, which was only a 20% chance, meant that she would be hooked up to life support, and essentially a vegetable for the rest of her life. The family was faced with a quality of life question, as she would not really have such if she pulled through (Unfortunately she didn't, RIP), but I believe in such a case it would have been right for euthanasia to be employed. With no chance to live a normal or coherent life, to end it would be the least cruel method. As mentioned before though, it's only in such extreme cases that euthanasia should be employed. Missing a limb is not a qualified reason, for example. Quality of life at the point is still high, though a bit difficult. It's only cases where there is extreme suffering or little/no quality of life is euthanasia permissible, and only by the sufferer's request. The family will decide assuming there is no way for the sufferer to respond, as they would know the person best. And that's my two cents on the issue, like I said before I started, everything said should be taken with a grain of salt, as it is merely an opinion melded from different life events (as is each person's opinion). |

Yes, I believe in it too. If I'm dying and suffering and there's no chance for me-I would want mercy killing- to die with dignity. My goddamn choice. I rather not "live" as a vegetable, it's already death. |
