Dandelion![]() Location Briefing:"Sometimes I think this whole city was put here simply because the gods adore crime. Pickpockets rob the common folk, merchants rob anyone they can dupe, and the Baron robs the robbers and the common folk, while the lesser nobles rob nearly everyone." Dandelion is a city mired in crime and incident. Originally erected as an experimental "prison city", the massive chunk of land was created to house dangerous inmates in a large, walled off sector far from the rest of Fioran society. However, as time went on the sector steadily became dilapidated up until the point of its eventual collapse and downfall due to a combination of poor funding, government corruption, and terrorist activity both inside and out of the sector. Left largely uninhabited for several decades, it wasn't until reserves of natural oil and lacrima were found in the remains of the prison city. Immediately, business began booming and connections began to form. Of the businesses and connections, very few of them were actually legitimate. In a few short decades, Dandelion became its own bustling metropolis. Industry rapidly boomed as entrepreneurs made a mad rush for this exploitable plot of land. The city gradually prospered but rarely in just ways. Coal, steel, lacrima, and blood. These were the the things that the city was built upon. Dandelion is constantly drenched in a thick fog that blankets the city due to its proximity to the South Fiore Sea. However, it is the unregulated industry and constant burning of coal that constantly darken the skies over Dandelion, creating a dreary, somber atmosphere. The city is separated by the 6 kilometer-wide Southrift River which runs vertically through the center of the city. The two halves of the city are connected by the Herveaux, Ashworth, and Kingsley bridges, each of which are named after the three "great families" who played a critical role in the development of the city during its infancy with their empires of coal, steel, and lacrima respectively. Much of the western half of the city is occupied by heavy industry of the Commercial District which constantly creates a dark gray haze over Dandelion's skies. Directly north of this stretch of land lies the Residential District where the majority of Dandelion's middle class lives. Along the long stretch of road that separates the two districts lies the Skid Row, a seedy entertainment district where gambling, crime, and gang activity are rife in the streets. The Docks occupy the southern waterfront along the coast of the South Fiore Sea. These docks are hot spot of criminal activity such as racketeering and smuggling, most of which is handled by the infamous Whalers gang who run rampant here. Besides the docks lie Orphan's Row, the slum of the city where those too poor to afford proper housing have sprung up a shanty town or ghetto. To the north of this area lie both the Military Quarter where the local city guard and Knights of the Fiore lay their heads, and the Cathedral Square. The eastern half of Dandelion, often referred to as "The Old City", features the Old Market and the Eastcrest Estates, where the upper crust of Dandelion's elite often make their homes. To the very southeast of the city lies the Flooded District, a watery ghost town. Crime is an everyday aspect of life in Dandelion. Thugs, thieves, and gangsters have always made this place their home. Danger lurks in every corner, especially in the Sewers beneath the city streets, a literal maze that only those who have grown up there have learned to successfully navigate. Meanwhile, the skyline of the city features countless crudely nailed boards and secretive pathways. The citizens of the city refer to them as the "The Thieves' Highway", given its popularity amongst those who make using these paths as part of their criminal lifestyle. Map |
