I was wondering what others on the board thought (or think) of Final Fantasy XIII. I know there are a lot of long-time FF fans who don't like the game, but there are also plenty of fans who do like the game (though that can be said about most FF games, to be honest), so I was curious. My opinion? I really like it. I can understand complaints about linearity, but I personally don't have much of a problem with it. I prefer it to, say, Final Fantasy VI's open-world second half. It probably helps that I really like XIII's story and characters. I don't mind the game's many cutscenes; in fact, I looked forward to them as I played. I really liked the development of the characters, specifically Sazh, Lightning, and Hope. I'm also incredibly glad that there isn't another "Vaan" in the main party. I think the game looks gorgeous, and the music sounds great. The voice acting isn't always fantastic, but I think it's pretty good, and better than FFX's, in my opinion. The two voices I dislike are Cid's (it sounds really stale most of the time) and Vanille's (who can get annoying at times), and even those aren't that bad. So, yeah, I really like the game. XD I haven't actually beat it yet, but I'm on Chapter 12, so I'm almost there. So, those are my thoughts. What does everyone else think? |

I haven't played it in english and also spoilt the hell out of it so I don't really know what to say. My opinion is pretty much reserved until I go out of my way to purchase the real game and actually finish it; that may be a long long time, perhaps even never... Edit: I did write a lot but actually, thinking about it, it's best I say nothing. I can't submit my opinion with validity if I haven't finished it (in english for that matter). Having finished it and done a lot of missions and whatnot, clocking in around 90 hours, I think I have a pretty solid opinion at this point. But since I don't really feel like writing out a whole frikkin' review, I'll just condense it to a pros&cons list. Pros: Great battle system, amazing music, gorgeous graphics/art design, very distinct characters, fast pacing, lengthy game, (overall) good character development, a nice challenge, good voice acting (with some minor quibbles here and there, but it's mostly an issue with dialogue rather than the voice actors themselves, I think.) Also, while I'm not a HUGE lover of Trophies (though I do love the Trophy sound it makes when you get one), I find that trying to go after all the trophies adds quite a bit of replayability. Also, while the mission sidequests start out slowly, you soon encounter more interesting and diverse creatures/locations. One example of this is the Gigantuar, who was a pretty memorable fella to fight, and quite difficult, to boot. Cons: While the linearity of the STORY itself doesn't bug me, and Pulse is a nice place to explore, once you take on almost all the missions and explore everywhere on Pulse you are literally stuck there outside of the endgame location and some of Eden. Personally, I don't care about linearity in general, but it would've been nice to revisit a lot of the areas in the game, especially considering how vivid each location was. Nautilus Park, for example; would've been a perfect place for minigames and the like. And while I hardly even noticed the lack of towns for the most part, I did feel like they could've had a bit more in terms of R&R. Of course, that might take something away from the lightning-quick pace the game establishes, but still. Moving on...while I enjoyed the story quite a bit and found myself connecting to the characters much moreso than, say, XII, I felt as if there wasn't enough exposition for the most part, and near the end some aspects just seem obscure, sorta. It's great that there's a lot of emotional, grandiose moments in cutscenes, but there's consequently a lack of the "little" moments that often defined FF games before. I can't really think of anything else to say except that "My Hands" was, sadly, tacked on. |
