hi, I live in an apartment complex with very many other WiFi routers. About two weeks ago, the wireless networking performance of all and any of my Macs has gone right down the toilet. I had been using an Airport Express but now I've upgraded to a gigabit Airport Extreme. It doesn't help. I've tried every channel from 1 to 11, as well as the Airport's automatic setting. Wireless traffic goes very quickly sometimes, then bogs down to excruciatingly slowville for most of the time. We're talking less than 10kbps and sometimes no connectivity at all. It's easiest to see when attempting to stream music to an Airport Express. Plugging any Mac directly into the airport with ethernet yields the connection I'm paying for. But how can I figure out what's wrong in the wireless spectrum? I've done everything I can think of. Monitoring with Kismac shows most local wifi networks migrate to channels 6 and 11, with only one staying at channel 1. When I leave the Airport channel selection on Automatic it trends down there too but becomes unusable. (but performace is terrible on any channel) Is one of my neighbors doing something crazy in the low end of the spectrum? Can I do anything to combat this short of lead wallpaper? Has anyone tried using channels 12-14 in America? I'm aware these are not licensed but if one got an Airport base station from Japan, it could be done, no? I'd love to use the 5Ghz 802.11n spectrum but none of my Macs support it, nor the iPhones. Any help will be apprecited. I didn't find the right solution from the Internet.
