Did you all know that Malcolm X gave Alex Haley the idea to make the movie Root's?

Yes it's true.

In 1963 Malcolm X began telling his life story to Alex Haley, at the end of each day Malcolm would go over to Alex Haley home, or he would meet Malcolm somewhere and Malcolm would talk about his life and Alex Haley wrote down everything that Malcolm X said.

During these conversations Malcolm X often talked about Africa. Malcolm talked about how black people had their names, language, history and culture taken away from them when they were captured and brought to America to be slaves.

Malcolm talked about how the slaves were beat in order to put fear into the over black slaves. Malcolm explained what happened when the slaves tried to run away.

Then Malcolm talked about his own life, he explained to Alex Haley why he no longer wore the last name Little. He said that Little was a slave name, and he said that Little was the name of the white slave owner that owned his people.

After joining the Nation of Islam Malcolm was given an X to replace the last name Little, and in 1957 Malcolm was later given the last name Shabazz.

This became the Autobiography of Malcolm X. They spent two years together compiling information for this autobiography, and this had a profound affect on Alex Haley. It inspired Alex Haley to want to know more about his own family history.

Malcolm X wife sister Betty Shabazz often talked about this, she said that Malcolm X inspired Alex Haley to write the movie Roots.

Malcolm has a speech where he talks about African roots, Malcolm gave that speech in 1965. Malcolm constantly taught on Africa, and he always tried to connect blacks in America to Africa.

If you look at the movie Roots, Kunta Kinte was a Muslim in that movie, and when he was brought to America they took away his African name and gave him a slave name.

Here is a quote by Malcolm X.

You can't hate the roots of a tree and not hate the tree.

Malcolm X and Alex Haley together.
