I'm glad this worked for her. And I hope it turns out to be her cure without any ill effects.

But, 👀 wasn't it in I Am Legend that people turned into hairless, wild, super-humans after a cancer cure based on genetic modification of cells had unexpected and unintended results? 💣

Shit and damn; fingers-crossed for the baby.

Baby girl is first in the world to be treated with 'designer immune cells'

A baby girl with aggressive leukaemia has become the first in the world to be treated with designer immune cells that were genetically engineered to wipe out her cancer.

The one-year-old, Layla Richards, was given months to live after conventional treatments failed to eradicate the disease, but she is now cancer free and doing well, a response one doctor described as “almost a miracle”.

The cells came from frozen batches of donated T cells, or white blood cells, which play a central role in human immunity. Before they are infused, the cells are given an extra gene to make them target leukaemia cells. They then have other genes disabled to stop them attacking patients who receive them, and to make them invisible to a drug called alemtuzumab, which doctors use to suppress patients’ immune systems.

Science and Research is going to shape our future.

If research can find and isolate, the cancer gene, and eliminate it from our DNA, great for mankind.

If they can isolate genes that causes autism, would you give it to your child? Most would..

I'm all for research looking into making human's, health wise, better.

Can you imagine, if they found the gene, that makes people violent?

Some might be against it, until they need it..

I don't think Autism is caused by a gene, so no, I wouldn't. And violence, in a gene? 🤔

I'm not signed on to the idea of manipulating human genes yet. I need more info. I think we need to tread lightly.

I do agree that it's the direction we are headed in and there will be great benefits because of it.

And hopefully, we won't all turn into hairless superhumans, or zombies... 😷 Or some other adverse response that can't even be imagined.

I do think autism has a genetic component.

Quote:

There is clearly a genetic part to autism. It tends to run in families. And identical twins, who share the same genes, are much more likely to both have autism than are fraternal twins.

So genes are involved. But it isn't easy to nail down what is going on genetically with autism.

I think scientist have been manipulating genes for over 50 years now, maybe longer. Look what has happen with AIDS, in Europe, they do gene isolation all the time. Remember the test tube babies?

I think this story comes from Europe..

I think fear and faith, (sorry to bring up religion) is what a lot of people are hesitant about.

Who know's what the 'future' humans will look like.

Maybe all women will be 5'7, 140-150lbs, light skinned (they seem to fair better in the world :D ), long hair, and suffer from the Stepford wives syndrome.

Ahh, the men..all they require, is a brain, infused with common sense!! ;)

Perhaps the first public step in the unveiling of the transhumanism movement.

There's a lot of scientific speculation when it comes to the "cause" or "origin" of autism. I'm not convinced that it's genetic simply because twins are likely to have and it's likely to run in families.

The most recent research I've become aware of is a correlation, again a correlation, not a cause, between certain moms who have things like fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue symptoms and combo-vaccines their babies are given. The theory is, it isn't the vaccine that causes the autism to develop, but thecombination of the child's genetic makeup which has been influenced by the mother's illness or disorder, and the makeup of the vaccines (not the ingredients but some of the components used to create the vaccine) which then activates a retrovirus, which in turn causes the autism-symptoms to eventually develop.

As far as people being afraid or allowing their religious beliefs to thwart scientific research (I think that's what you were alluding to), eh. I think it's just new. And like any new thing, we aren't and shouldn't, go into the deep end first. Some scientists and those funding their research, will pursue the edges of what's allowed ethically and legally, and I think that's fine and necessary. But mainstream needs to be cautious because it is indeed a new frontier.

The thing I like about the story, is that an ethical board was assembled and reviewed the situation, before agreeing to allow the use of this gene therapy on the child. I think that's great. As opposed to our system here, in which I believe the FDA has to agree.

I know..

The FDA doesn't regulate vitamins, in which millions of people take, thinking they're fine.

I think the bottom line is money. The US wants to have the patent on the new drugs, in order to make million-billions off it first.

Europe/Canade is more open to experiment. Magic Johnson had to go to Europe to get his AID's medication.
