I didn't get an allowance as a kid! I was expected to attend school and do well because I was told to. If I didn't my life was going to be my butt meet the wooden spoon!! LOL
I did get a job though when I was older. It was a great learning experience for me.
I'm not against an allowance at all! I think it can help kids be responsible and they gain self confidence! Right. Same here.
It's really, in my case, a way to give my daughter a budget and a lesson on earning money.
The more she does, above and beyond her chores, she gets a tip (instant gratification). The girl already gets only A's and B's, and that's always been the case. I want her grades to be an easy way for her to get a lot of money fast BUT it's after hard work at school (delaying gratification).
I have to say, I think this "program" is off to a good start. She has a chart that shows how much she could potentially earn every week (when she does the math - forecasting). She's already planning an outing to Disneyland (goal-setting).

@Plus 1 - Like you, I think those lessons are important. 👍🏽 Maybe $10 for A's, B $5. And if it's an A in math or science maybe a STEM bonus. And tips for going above and beyond on chores. That should do for now.
bribery.... bad !! ps: .. don`t employ house helps.... everybody works..... u go to work everyday to earn the rent etc right? their `work" is been a student .. and share of work keeping the house running tight just saying ... allowance ..just cover the basic school lunch break +$100/ month is fair enough i don`t believe students should work during school sessions...summer jobs ok
What? Bribery? I call it an incentivized method for redistribution of family finances in a responsible way.

Sort of, not really.
She and her brother decided how chores would be distributed.
Yes, parents and their games to teach life lessons to their kids while the kids are in a safe environment to make mistakes. Priceless.

That's part of the point. She will have to prioritize her wants. What is there to "see though"? And what "bluff" is there to call one on?

Beserker, it sounds as though you think parents making decisions for their kids is a bad thing. Explain.

Beserker, it sounds as though you think parents making decisions for their kids is a bad thing. Explain. it`s just most of the decisions are how do i put? ..average .....50%..... no outside curve< 25>75%
emphasis is usually based on safety {i know they thinking safety, general consensus on what has always worked}
me? i call it laziness.... u just produce kids with well ....average outcome
ps:
listening to your kids ... oddity of ideas and outlook not withstanding and been supportive is more important
dreams are what is unknown to reality.... brought to reality ...that is magic
u parents might be missing out on a lot of magic ...and worse never even know it
by rushing head on what is known and has always worked might guarantee success.. but nothing outstanding
ps: am a gambler .... all or lost in the crowd or nothing but + effort of having tried

You're right - it's magic when kids are given the freedom to show what they can do, think and question.
