I actually have no problem with arranged marriages. They have smaller divorce rates, or so I've been told, and I could see that.

It's the "child" part that's an issue in my opinion.

I can't say I disagree. But as I read this story it seems to focus on immigrants who brought their culture here. Different cultures have different rules. Like plural marriage in some societies.

So the question becomes, should they be allowed to practice cultural traditions that may be illegal here?

I think the answer's no, particularly because kids are involved.

For example, individuals have no real religious freedom when it comes to kids. So, culturally they would need to be compelled to abide by our laws.

Unless I missed something in the story, the marriages adhere to the laws of their respective states. Did you read something that said otherwise?
