Isn't part of James Bond's appeal the fact that he can blend in anywhere? How would Idris, as a black Bond, blend in with the criminal element which is white? A spy or any person working undercover, has to blend in. Sorry, Idris.
For one, Idris has more than one accent. He has his natural British accent, an African accent, and an American accent. A good spy should be able to blend in. He has three continents with sizeable black populations he can operate in. He stands out due to his height & build, not so much his color, imo.
Be it fiction, or real life, good guys & bad guys come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and nationalities. This James Bond where being over the top stories are the norm. Bond being black would be one of the more subtle changes, I think.
I believe you saw the film Pacific Rim, where he was the leader in humanity's battle against the invading monsters. It was not about him being black. He was British in the film. He even had an adopted Asian daughter. None of that seemed preposterous in the story.
It was about his will to.....cancel the apocalypse.
I loved this scene, too. To be honest, I really did not like the film due to the boring protagonist. Idris carried this film.
still feel u looking at it the wrong way
richard roundtree will always be shaft sean connery will always be james bond idris will always be luther tina turner will always be `proud Mary"
... certain acting parts and the actor how they fit will always leave a indelible memory of that character been played.. maybe mentally can never be replaced
.... but as of now clive is the nearest u might get to reproduce BOND{ i mean`t Sean Connery} not the succeeding counterfeits ..moore, bronson, lazenberg etc
I say no bueno to typecasting.
..typecasting and stereocasting
subtle but distinctly different
just saying
..HELL NO!!..
ain`t watching a white shaft in AFRICA
ps ... i mean tarzan did dat already
However, Shaft was specifically a black man.................... I am not sure if the ethnicity of James Bond was ever emphasized. AFAIK, the main thing was that Bond be British man of action which Idris excels at.
Fleming decided that Bond should resemble both American singer Hoagy Carmichael and himself
`` was not until the penultimate novel, You Only Live Twice, that Fleming gave Bond a sense of family background. The book was the first to be written after the release of Dr. No in cinemas and Sean Connery's depiction of Bond affected Fleming's interpretation of the character, to give Bond both a sense of humour and Scottish antecedents that were not present in the previous stories.[9] In a fictional obituary, purportedly published in The Times, Bond's parents were given as Andrew Bond, from the village of Glencoe, Scotland, and Monique Delacroix, from the canton of Vaud, Switzerland''
on the name:
``The name James Bond came from that of the American ornithologist James Bond, a Caribbean bird expert and author of the definitive field guide Birds of the West Indies. Fleming, a keen birdwatcher himself, had a copy of Bond's guide and he later explained to the ornithologist's wife that "It struck me that this brief, unromantic, Anglo-Saxon and yet very masculine name was just what I needed, and so a second James Bond was born"
ps:
as i keep saying
james bond is well ...James bond
shaft is well shaft...
those guys above are unique in their own way.... color and everything and let`s not get carried away about color Bronson and Samuel Jackson `murdered" that uniqueness despite same nationality and ethnicity
dr who... has the gift of metamorphosis .. so anybody with ``certain unique quirk" can be good enough
ps:
no i still won`t watch an Italian born in east -Harlem{yep quite some of those do exist} play a west- Harlem black mother....{shut your mouth}
Scotland has born & bred black folks. The subsequent Bond actors were not required to look like, nor have the exact same origins of the first interpretation of the character.
...doc
let me break it down: James bond was a white British spy going around the world assassinating any opposition irrespective of color or nationality opposed to hegemony of her royal majesty{British empire}
no black actor or even white actor with brain cells should be clamoring to play dat cobwebbed basement dwelling character in 21st century..
.. when i do watch those movies ... like tongue in cheek... the primping
pomposity, snotty and weird accent only adds to the humor and absurdity
yes idris and Clive .. both are too good to play dat shit{i think both know dat too}
ps:
i don`t see why the clamor to elect a resident black assassin serving her royal majesty
or wanna prove blacks make good assassins as white`s?

James Bond is a long running action-adventure film series.
We have multiple generations of Bond Girls!
I am just stating why it is not a problem for Idris to play James Bond.
My intent is not to convince you to see my view of it.
James Bond, like most long-standing action heroes, is all about fun, intrigue, drama, romance, & fantasy.
I don't think many go into, or walk out of, a James Bond film with deep thoughts of political undertones.
Tom Hardy....the guy that played Bane (who broke Batman's back).....too funny!

Idris Elba Responds to Bond Author’s Remarks as a Bookie Bets on Tom Hardy Wednesday, September 2nd, 2015 at 2:52pm PST - by Kevin Melrose
Even as Idris Elba responded, with signature class, to uproar over comments by a James Bond author that the actor is “a bit too ‘street'” to play 007, another name is quickly emerging as an oddsmaker’s favorite to succeed Daniel Craig: Tom Hardy.
Yes, the actor known for rough-and-tumble roles in such films as “The Dark Knight Rises,” “Bronson,” “Warrior,” “Mad Max: Fury Road” and the upcoming “Legend.”
Frequently mentioned in Bond speculation, Elba was drawn back into the discussion this week when author Anthony Horowitz, who writes the Bond novels for the Ian Fleming estate, was quoted as saying, “For me, Idris Elba is a bit too rough to play the part. It’s not a colour issue. I think he is probably a bit too ‘street’ for Bond. Is it a question of being suave? Yeah.” He quickly apologized, clarifying that, “Clumsily, I chose the word ‘street’ as Elba’s gritty portrayal of DCI John Luther was in my mind, but I admit it was a poor choice of word.”
While admittedly a poor word choice, Horowitz’s original remarks appeared to have mattered little to Elba, who wrote on Instagram, “Always Keep Smiling!! It takes no energy and never hurts! Learned that from the Street!”
However, it’s not Elba, but rather Hardy, whose odds of replacing Craig have been slashed from 6 to 1 to 4 to 1 by an online bookmaker in Ireland.
Variety reports that while a poll conducted by BoyleSports still has Elba tied for the lead with “Homeland” actor Damian Lewis at 3-to-1 odds, the opinion among gamblers appears to be turning.
“With the support showing no signs of drying up, we are expecting Tom Hardy to be the new favorite for the role sooner rather than later,” a BoyleSports spokesperson said in a statement, “which could result in BoyleSports being hit hard if Hardy lands the role.”
Hardy is currently tied with “Batman v Superman” story Henry Cavill. The Top 10 is rounded out by Michael Fassbender, Richard Armitage, Orlando Bloom, Dougray Scott, Rupert Friend and Dominic West.
Here is Bane breaking the Bat. Batman, played by Christian Bale, is British. This back-breaking scene was literally taken from the classic first fight between the two from the comics.
They should have given a Bond role to Sam Jackson at the time of Shaft. He would have been perfect for it at that time.
Roger moore and pierce brosnan. I think a black bond would be a nice new flavor but unfortunately im afraid the movie wouldnt get enough feedback only because of his color. Too conditioned to seeing a white bond
Idris Elba Admits James Bond Role Would Be ‘An Amazing Opportunity’
Thursday, September 3rd, 2015 at 8:44am PST - by Kevin Melrose
Amid the current uproar and bookmaking surrounding the potential next James Bond, have you wondered whether Idris Elba actually wants the iconic role? It turns out, he kind of does — but it may be up to his fans to make it happen.
“If human beings want to know if there’s any connectivity between all of us, the one thing I’ve heard around the world universally is that, ‘You’ll be great at James Bond!’” the actor told Variety last month, during an interview about Cary Fukunaga’s “Beasts of No Nation.” “If it should happen, that’s proof there’s connectivity amongst human beings. If everyone wants something, they can make it happen. That would be true.”
The trade paper, which only now dusted off the quotes, says that Elba emphasized that he’s not been approached to play Bond, but he’d probably take the role if asked.
“It’s an amazing opportunity,” he said. “But who knows, man. I’ve stopped speaking about it now. Even speaking to you now, I shouldn’t have answered that question.”
Although Daniel Craig has signaled that his fourth Bond film, November’s “Spectre,” could be his last, Sony Pictures is holding out hope that he’ll return for at least one more.
