Most came from Scotland, Ireland, and England. Many were Serfs, tied to the Master's/Owner's land, tied to them forever. The Civil War, allowed them to fight for a country that they believed in, having been unable to join England's military, because of class and social standing. The funniest thing about this, once they reached the shores of America, they then took on the attitude of their former oppressors! All of this took place, so the poor white settler could "prove" that he was faithful to the American government. MPOV
