THE 1712 “WILLIE LYNCH MAKING OF A SLAVE LETTER”
AND A 2015 UPDATE
The 1712 “Willie Lynch Letter: The Making of a Slave!” is allegedly a speech delivered by slave owner Willie Lynch. Therein, Lynch likened the making of a slave to the “breaking in” of horses, e.g., “Completely break the female horse until she becomes very gentle, whereas you or anybody can ride her in her comfort. Breed the mare and the stud until you have the desired offspring. Then you can turn the stud to freedom until you need him again. Train the female horse whereby she will eat out of your hand, and she will in turn train the infant horse to eat out of your hand also. When it comes to breaking the uncivilized nigger, use the same process, but vary the degree and step up the pressure, so as to do a complete reversal of the mind. Take the meanest and most restless nigger, strip him of his clothes in front of the remaining male niggers, the female, and the nigger infant, tar and feather him, tie each leg to a different horse faced in opposite directions, set him afire and beat both horses to pull him apart in front of the remaining nigger…”
The Lynch Letter also advocated divide and conquer techniques such as: “Don't forget you must pitch the old black Male vs. the young black Male… You must use the dark skin slaves vs. the light skin slaves... You must use the female vs. the male. …They must love, respect and trust only us.” As an internal 1990s critique, the Lynch Letter was circulated among African Americans with a focus on the “Willie Lynch Syndrome,” i.e., divisive internal behavior based on skin color, social status, hair quality, social organization affiliations, religion, residence, etc. The following presents what a Lynch-like letter might state in 2015.
Good afternoon fellow one percenters:
I am especially honored to present the Willie Lynch update. Religiously follow my 13-point plan and we shall overcome all obstacles to our dominance.
1. The essence of our plan for modern slavery is based on this simple truth: One cannot fully enjoy freedom if one can’t pay to do so!” Therefore, we remain dedicated to stifling the dream of Martin Luther King Jr., especially his “Poor People’s Campaign.” We have been so successful in repressing the poor as well as the middle class that, by 2016, the top one percent of us will own most of the world’s wealth and, presently, about 40 billionaires have more wealth than all African Americans. Wonderful evidence of our dollar driven movement’s impact came from the Urban League which reported that African Americans have a mere 72% of what Whites have in all areas!
2. Although African Americans have more wealth than 85% of all countries, we continue to suck the majority of their wages into our golden coffers. If we steadfastly maintain our current course of ever widening economic disparities, then we shall prevail forever. Parenthetically, it was very delightful to note new research that demonstrates relationships between low income and slower brain development. This supports last year’s great news related to the fact that low income and low SAT scores are directly related and vice versa. As we aggressively pursue our economic strategy, do not worry about their few civil rights victories. Just make them fight “trench-like, never-ending warfare” to secure their Constitutional freedoms. They might win a skirmish or two, but we can count on the Supreme Court to set them back as it did with the Voting Rights Act.
3. We can also subvert their efforts by making sure that the vast majority never understand the “difference between a moment and a movement,” the “difference between a few days of public protest and a plan of action.” For example, we should encourage a few weeks of chanting about “Black Lives Matter!” They will blow off steam and, at the same time, we can sell them expensive hoodies to wear during their rallies and charge inflated rates for the buses they take to rallies as well as for the hotels when they arrive. After a few cathartic rallies, it is unlikely they will follow up with something such as a voter registration campaign with a goal to register all eligible African Americans over the next decade.
4. Support their charismatic leaders with as much exposure as possible. Turn them into supernovas and their potential “movements” will dim as these bright stars depart because there was no succession planning. Their movements will become “dinosaurs” as was the case with the “Back to Africa” movement. Today, many of their adults and most of their children have not heard of Marcus Garvey. However, there is one worrisome emergent leader, i.e., the newly elected D.C. Mayor Bowser. In her first public address to the District, to my chagrin, she wisely stressed affordable housing and economic development –essentially advanced a poor people’s campaign which we can ill-afford. Our Congressional oversight troops must stymie her plans as they have steadfastly done with Obama.
5. Meanwhile, starting with education which is key to economic mobility, we must make everything they need as unaffordable as possible. For example, keep public college tuition rates above $30,000 per year and privates above $50,000. Keep public school teachers’ salaries low! Heavily finance prisons to support the “school to prison pipeline.” Instead of former Alabama governor Wallace standing in the doorway ranting about "segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever,” we will use dollars to do more effective damage!
6. The best schools are in the best neighborhoods and, of course, “affordable housing” is an anathema for us. Therefore, it was a glorious moment when the owner of a new Baltimore apartment building announced rental rates up to $3,500 per month. For leadership in inflating the cost of home ownership, look to our nation’s capital where the median home price is about a half million! If we lose ground on the housing front, then let it be in our old suburbs where houses are being sold at handsomely inflated prices.
7. Do not hesitate to bail out multi-national, multi-billion dollar industries such as our car manufacturers. Keep the average cost of new cars above $35,000 with a guaranteed need for replacement in 5 years or less. Sell them the most expensive cars for which they can make a down payment. Later, repossess and yield a tidy profit.
8. Keep their eyes off the real prizes. Karl Marx was right about providing the masses with opiates to help them adjust to oppression. The most recent award winning opiates, “Gray’s Anatomy,” “Scandal,” and “How to Get Away with Murder,” did indeed keep people mesmerized (“Shondarized”). Make sure “Empire” becomes the longest running TV series, since all manner of them were, as they say, “chillin” while watching religiously! You won’t hear them talking about “I woke up this morning with my mind on freedom” because they will wake up tweeting and texting about Taraji having “showed her butt.”
9. The new gadgets and social media must constantly be used to induce passivity among their youth. Instead of the “chicken in every pot” President Hoover promised, we will put a handheld electronic device loaded with games, not books, in the hands of every African American child. Thank God for the fact that it takes mega-millions to own radio and television station, resulting in fewer and fewer African American owners. One day, we shall have full control of the industry and the making of their images.
10. As in days gone by, let’s continue our highly effective divide and conquer techniques. Do not interfere with the downfall of the once powerful African American churches. Remain silent when ministers such as Creflo Dollar asks followers to purchase a $60 million jet. Give unlimited Sunday morning “community service” air time to television evangelists who sell prayer cloths, anointed oils, and prosperity plans.
11. Do not awaken any of their sleeping giant organizations. All hell could break lose if they were to awaken and develop highly effective charter schools and/or improved public schools. Think of our revenue loses if their many social and civic organizations stopped spiking our economies during their annual national gatherings and, instead, held all of their events at their own establishments.
12. Since they are fond of passing laws, let us do the same. Above all, do not permit new tax laws that will stop the rich from paying fewer taxes than the middle class! It’s a simple matter of replacing Jim Crow Codes with the right Tax Codes. Pass freedom of religious expression acts in every state, support efforts to legalize marijuana, and fight all gun control legislation. There is no need for rogue cops if African Americans kill each other at rates higher than those they experienced during the Viet Nam War.
13. As we continue to abscond with the wealth of our nation, do not draw undue attention as was done when some of the “good old boys” acted too fast and erroneously in Indiana with their religious freedom legislation. Instead of racist and sexist attacks, just follow the fine example of my neighborhood. We advertise widely that we seek to become a diverse and inclusive community. The only negative feedback came from one African American couple who groused about the average cost of our homes being a little over $4.5 million.
After a tremendous decade of economic prosperity for us and stagnation for them, I again remind you that folks can have all of the civil rights they want, but they can’t eat, live, play, learn, rent, sleep, travel, attend college, buy a car, become a home owner, use a daycare center, have good health care, or do anything else when they can’t afford to pay.
