Captain Marvel Adds Lashana Lynch in Mystery Role
Is it possible that Lashana Lynch is playing Monica Rambeau in Captain Marvel?

The Captain Marvel movie has been assembling quite a cast. We've got Samuel L. Jackson finally returning to the role of Nick Fury (granted, this movie takes place in the '90s). We've got the always deliciously villainous Ben Mendelsohn as, of course, a villain (possibly a Skrull). He'll play opposite Brie Larson as Carol Danvers, the Captain Marvel of the title. But there's another Captain Marvel in the movie, with Jude Law as the alien Kree Captain Mar-Vell. So that's two Captain Marvels for your money.

But what if there was a third?

Back in January, She's Gotta Have It star DeWanda Wise was added to the Captain Marvel cast in an unnamed part. She has since departed the role, with scheduling conflicts between the Captain Marvel movie (which begins filming later this spring) and Netflix's She's Gotta Have It. Now THR has word that Ms. Wise has been replaced by Lashana Lynch (Rosaline Capulet on ABC's short-lived Still Star-Crossed).

We still don't have any hard details on this mystery role. But when Ms. Wise was first cast in January, Deadline described the part as a "plum" supporting role. That would seem to indicate that it's a character with a lot to do, and maybe one with some comic book history. And since Captain Marvel so far hasn't been shy about its ties to other characters who share the legacy (and to be fair, we kind of need to meet Mar-Vell in order for Carol's journey to really kick off), is it possible that the mysterious character that Lashana Lynch is playing could be Monica Rambeau, the third person (in Marvel Comics, we're not talking about the fella who says "Shazam" over at DC) to hold the name?

Ms. Rambeau has gone by several names in the comics, including Pulsar, Daystar, Photon, and currently, Spectrum. But for a good chunk of time she was Captain Marvel, and was a full-fledged member of the Avengers. She was created by the great Spider-Man creative team of Roger Stern and John Romita, Jr. back in 1982, which is where she gained her energy projection/absorption/manipulation powers after exposure to extradimensional energy.

We're already getting Carol Danvers' origin in this movie, so it wouldn't be a stretch for someone else to get powers by the film's end, right? And Marvel isn't shy with making sure they populate each of their standalone movies with as many relevant members of a heroes' supporting cast as they can.

We'll probably find out well before Captain Marvel's March 8, 2019 release date and the movie should begin production in February. Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are directing from a script by Geneva Robertson-Dworet. The full schedule of Marvel superhero movies can be found here.

Former Captain Marvel Actress Interested in Playing Storm

Following her departure from Captain Marvel, actress DeWanda Wise has expressed interest in playing another Marvel Comics character: Storm.

Wise, who joined Captain Marvel in January, was forced to drop out of the Marvel Studios film because of scheduling conflicts with her Netflix series She’s Gotta Have It. The Spike Lee series was renewed earlier this year for a second season, and appears to be going back in front of the camera soon, leaving the actress to exit what would have been her biggest feature role to date. However, she’s seems to be keeping an eye out for other potential superhero movie roles.

In an Instagram post that’s since been deleted, Wise responded to apparent direct messages from fans calling for her to play the popular X-Man. “Per your DMs, I too would love to play Storm,” she wrote. “Even though that’s totally not a thing (yet). So feel free to spam Marvel accounts.”

Disney is in the process of acquiring most of 21st Century Fox’s key assets, which will bring the X-Men and Fantastic Four to Marvel Studios. However, as Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has stated repeatedly, it’s far too early to begin thinking about those characters joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The problem is that, although Disney and Fox have agreed to a deal, the merger needs to be approved by federal regulators, which could take at least 12 months. Given that the deal was only announced in December, we’re still quite a ways off from any X-Men casting for the MCU, and, well, Fox already has a Storm with young actress Alexandra Shipp.

The biggest takeaway here, however, is that Wise is still eager to join the MCU.

I would be totally pleased if this set-up was true.

Monica is unique for several reasons:

- She was one of the first black heroines.

- She was the third black hero to join the Avengers, after Black Panther & Falcon.

- Her power-set made her one of the most powerful Avengers outside of Thor, Hulk, & Hercules (two of those three are mythological gods!).

- She was the first black hero to be leader of the Avengers (on Captain America's recommendation).

- The CGI is good enough to showcase her powers.

- People who loved the Black Panther film will go nuts once they see how powerful Monica is.

- Monica will be a breath of fresh air compared to the type cast roles normally available to black women in film.

- Monica is probably the most powerful black hero in the Marvel Universe.

Speculation: ‘Captain Marvel”s Lashana Lynch May Be A Rambeau, Just Not Monica…

Charles Murphy March 22, 2018

Many of you probably read our story earlier today in which we gave some details about Lashana Lynch’s role in Captain Marvel. When Dewanda Wise was cast in the role, the internet buzz was that we had our MCU Monica Rambeau and people who grew up reading Avengers comics in the 1980s were thrilled! While I can neither confirm nor deny that the role once held by Wise and now filled by Lynch is Monica Rambeau, I think there’s sufficient reason to speculate that it A Rambeau: Monica’s mother, Maria.

Some of the principal photography for Captain Marvel will take place in New Orleans, a location that immediately puts Monica Rambeau in the forefront of Marvel Comics’ fans’ minds. Monica Rambeau was a police officer in New Orleans when an accident gifted her with enormous powers. She went on the take the name of Captain Marvel (among many other aliases) and lead the Avengers for a time. However, a role in Captain Marvel as Carol’s sidekick doesn’t really do justice to one of the most powerful Marvel characters and giving her a young child would be quite a change from the source material. What does make a lot more sense, however, is using the film to introduce her as a child who has a relationship with Carol Danvers through her mother.

Monica’s mother, Maria, was a seamstress in New Orleans. She and her husband Frank, a former police officer and fire fighter, were proud, loving and supportive parents who frequently appeared in the background. Showing that even the superest of superheroes have worried parents, Maria and Frank served as a reality check for Monica. If, as we were told, Lynch’s character has a young daughter, say maybe 10-15 years old, and this film is shot in the mid-90’s, we could easily imagine the daughter being Monica. When Carol resurfaces in the present, a now thirtysomething Monica would clearly recognize her mom’s friend and might be drawn back into the action setting up another powered up hero from whatever comes after Avengers 4.

Of course that leaves to wonder what exactly they’ll be filming in New Orleans. While we have no idea exactly what to expect, it’s possible that some location in New Orleans could be filling in for an important location in the comics: Cape Canaveral. It was at a base in Cape Canaveral where much of Carol’s origin story took place, revolving around an old Kree Sentry and an undercover Kree officer, Mar-Vell.

Again this is all speculation, but at this point it doesn’t seem too wild given what we know. Of course Lynch could be playing Monica Rambeau or someone else we haven’t even thought of, so for now let’s just have some fun thinking about who she might be!

Captain Marvel hits theaters March 8, 2019!

Back in 1982, writer Roger Stern & artist John Romita Jr. created perhaps the most powerful black hero in the Marvel Universe, Monica Rambeau. They created her during their legendary, and my all-time favorite run on the Amazing Spider-Man.

Even before she got her powers, she was strong-willed & true.

I love her classic, original costume when she used the name Captain Marvel.

Shortly after her first appearance, the Avengers almost immediately offered her membership.
