Spike Lee might be dipping his hat in the superhero genre now.

Spider-Man: Nightwatch Movie in Development From Sony and Marvel
Are Spike Lee and Cheo Hodari Coker collaborating on a Spider-Man spinoff for Sony?

I tell ya, even I had forgotten about Nightwatch, an obscure Spider-Man supporting character with a typically '90s name and costume design, who was briefly touted as the "next big thing" during an era of comics where everything was potentially the "next big thing" (see also: Cardiac...or actually, don't). Nightwatch is the story of a doctor who finds himself in possession of a high-tech suit...the problem is that he takes the suit off of a dead future version of himself. That would freak anyone out.

Nightwatch was created by Terry Kavanagh, Alex Saviuk, and Joe Rubinstein during their underrated period on Web of Spider-Man in 1993, and had slipped from memory for the most part. The character does still pop up in Marvel Comics from time to time, but he's never been a major player.

So this is why it's so surprising to hear that Sony is apparently developing a Nightwatch movie, as part of their plan to utilize whatever Marvel characters they have in their stable with the Spider-Man rights. Venom (about the famous Spidey villain) will be the first of their standalone/Spidey spinoffs, with Silver & Black (about Spidey supporting antiheroes Black Cat and Silver Sable) to follow, and apparently other side projects in development as well. They've been trying to get their own Spider-verse off the ground for years now, but it hasn't panned out.

But the latest info is that not only is Nightwatch in the planning stages, but that Sony is targeting two interesting names to bring him to the screen. Spike Lee is said to be in early talks to direct, with Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker writing. That Hashtag Show were the first to report the news that Sony is working on a Nightwatch movie with Lee and Coker involved, and The Wrap seems to have confirmed it. I did my own digging as well, but representatives for Sony and others involved with the project had no comment at the time of this writing. I'll certainly let you know if that changes.

There is no release date currently set for the Nightwatch movie, and honestly, it's so early in the development process that we might never see it. But there does appear to be some truth to this one, and the prospect of Spike Lee getting involved with a superhero project, in any capacity, is certainly an interesting one.

Spike Lee Might Finally Make a Superhero Movie

BY JOSHUA RIVERA

Sony's Spider-Man universe without Spider-Man is starting to get intriguing as hell.

The next Spike Lee joint might be heavy on tights. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lee is currently in talks to direct a movie based on the Marvel superhero Nightwatch for Sony.

Even in an era where D-List Marvel heroes are fronting blockbuster movies (remember, absolutely no one knew anything about the Guardians of the Galaxy before 2014), Nightwatch is a pretty deep cut. He's a Spider-Man character from the early '90s with a needlessly convoluted backstory and a look that blatantly ripped off Todd McFarlane's then-runaway hit Spawn; in other words, don't bother with a Wikipedia search, it's a mess.

What is worth noting is the fact that Nightwatch is one of the few black characters in the Marvel Universe that Sony can use, thanks to his origin in a Spider-Man comic. This makes Nightwatch the fourth movie in Sony's strange experiment to build a comic book cinematic universe using Spider-Man characters but without actually having Spider-Man. This plan continues to be as strange as it was when it was announced, but when you look at the movies being made, it's starting to take an interesting shape: You have Venom, the wildly popular anti-hero with a huge fanbase that will, Sony hopes, do really well and kick things off with a bang. Then comes Silver and Black, a movie with women in the lead, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood. Then there's a vampire flick, based on Spider-Man frenemy Morbius, the Living Vampire, and now Nightwatch.

In short, it seems like Sony is trying to build out a universe with both a diversity of characters and genres, and they're doing a pretty good job of figuring out how to do it, even if they have to be a touch obscure about it. Of course, having Spike Lee (along with Luke Cage showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker writing the script) will go a long way to getting lots of people interested in a comic book character you probably didn't hear about until today.
