COURAGE
|
will smith was successful as a rapper. but he had enough sense to know that his type of rap music wouldn't have the longevity that other rappers would have. will smith was successful enough in rap to have a solid fan base that made him a lot of money and that would allow nbc to take a chance on him. the same can be said for llcoolj and his film career. This is not accurate. Will Smith is lightskinned, and that is what appealed to White America. Just like today's main lineup of rappers. So it was A-Okay come time to move him up to the next echelon of Pop Icon status...just like LLCoolJ; Will Smith was making lame rap songs for White America ("parents just don't understand") and showing how much he loved Whitefolk. Of course they heard his lightskinned-cries, then Hollywood came calling with the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air ...and the rest is history... So really If they weren't lightskinned, they would have been passed over for other rappers who were far, far better than the both of them. As a matter of fact, both of their rap careers was made legendary not due to talent, but due to being lightskinned-----especially Will Smith. Edited by The SOLE Controller, Sep 24 2013, 05:54 AM.

You just proved my point. Will smith wasn't going to make it as a rapper. He didn't get the exposure like 2 chains and lil Wayne. Same happens to lupe and common. Rappers who are well known in their area but get very little play elsewhere. I'll hear 35 Rick Ross songs before I hear positive lupe fiasco spitting real shit. Will smith made dumb ass songs. I can name you 2 that actually were good at that time. And those same songs he did then would be considered pop now. "Nod your head" that's not rap "Wild Wild West" that's not hip hop "Miami" is borderline rap but more pop Will smith wasn't pulling exposure like snoop dog, ice cube and other rappers back then. Fresh prince is what put him on the map. |

Lmao @ will smith being a successful rapper. I'm from Chicago. I remember the real Kanye west. The one who didn't rap about the dumb shit he does now. And nobody gave him exposure. But let some bastard make a song about sex, ass and money. With someone in the background beating pots and pans for the beat.....media says "yes yes yes" |

At the time Will Smith was rapping, he was successful. He was also acting so he didn't have to spend his entire life dedicated to music. It's a different time right now. He didn't have to cuss or call women bitches and whores to make money. |

But who was he successful to? Who gave him play? He wasn't presented by black media outlets......he wasn't a BET product. He was mtv and vh1.... He wasn't on the face of rap......not like ice cube and easy e |

Cray... Will Smith was a successful rapper who did in fact get rich off of rapping from mid-80's thru early-90's...the problem is, the success wasn't due to talent, but due to looks AKA being lightskinned a racist Industry. Edited by The SOLE Controller, Sep 24 2013, 12:51 PM.

That wasn't his full time gig. He was acting. Every now and then he went to the studio. |

he didn't start acting, until after '92...he was rapping up until then, and that's what got him the exposure for those acting gigs |

Exactly, which is why I said who was successful to? Ask the black community who the top rappers back then were. Not one will ever say will smith. |
