Thanks for the first hand account Ether. There's no disputing that many minorities who are overlooked for racial reasons. However, not all minorities who are overlooked are overlooked for racial reasons. Accusing racism gets a lot more notice than, "the other guy was just as good", "the other guy had more experience", "the bosses nephew got the promotion", etc. Does racism exist. Absolutely. Is racism present every time it's brought up? Not hardly. As for your situation, you could try to keep a positive attitude and apply yourself in such a ferocious manner that it's impossible for them to overlook you again, or quit. |

I feel you.....but I strongly believe this is a race issue. Has shit to do with skill..... It could also be just a favoritism thing. But either way, it's not fair. Cause I put in mean work there and have the paper trail to prove it. But I'm not the only one, the others that are passed up are black as well. Of you aren't brown nosing, dancing for the superiors then of are overlooked. Being black doesn't help.... |

Oh and as far as your advice to me, did that. That's where I am now....and why I'm hitting up resources. After months of over achieving and keeping notes of everything said and every interaction I shouldn't have to quit and leave a job I have history at when there is clearly room for growth. |

Don't just make empty claims with irrelevant examples and information. Address what I posted, directly. Don't attack it with generalizations, irrelevancies, & phantom premises. Show where Dr. Jensen is wrong about America. Show where this guy is not posting about the way life is, in America. The Federal GOVT has stat after stat, to validate the reality of racial discrimination against Blacks. I just dedicated a niiiiice bit of proof in a thread, to reddgirl. So, you gotta get real and you gotta get honest about honest about what really happens in AmeriKKKa. And point out where this guy is unreasonable. I'll be waiting. If you ever decide to show that you do indeed, have respect for your own opinion. |

Ether, You have to take what your co-worker said to you as a heads up. There could be something that he/she as heard about you and that's why you are not getting promoted. It's not a matter of speaking your mind, it's how you come off while speaking your mind. Are you offering solutions with your opinions or are you just complaining? And you have to pick and chose your battles wisely. Also you have to be aware of who you are sharing your opinions with. And one more advice, DO NOT TRUST H.R. Keep in mind their loyalty is to the company. And if an executive doesn't think you are good for the company in a particular position, then H.R. is going to side with the executive. Great advice WTG! Especially this:
Could the open door policy be a way to get complainers to out themselves? You sound like you have a legitimate beef, but by mentioning it you are upsetting their utopia. Reminds me of a comic strip in which a really big snowstorm was expected so the boss got on the intercom and announced, "All non-essential employees may leave early before the storm arrives." The next frame was him looking out of his window with binoculars watching the employees leave thinking, "This is going to make the next round of lay offs a lot easier."
