Bad news. I don’t mean to alarm you, but this is too important not to share: If the Supreme Court strikes down a key part of the Voting Rights Act this month, it’s going to be open season on voting rights. Section 5 of the Act requires states with histories of racial discrimination to get Justice Department approval before changing their voting laws. It’s a necessary check on politicians seeking to disenfranchise people who aren’t likely to vote for them. Now the high Court – dominated by conservatives – is deciding whether to get rid of that section of the law altogether, giving Republicans carte blanche to deny voting rights to millions of citizens. The ruling could come at any time, so we have to show the Court where we stand on this right now. The right to vote shouldn’t vary depending on what state you live in, but we’ve seen what Republican governors are willing to do to stack the deck in their favor. They are using their control of state capitols to limit early voting windows, complicate voter registration efforts, and generally make it as difficult as possible for Democrats to cast a ballot. Just this week Nevada’s Republican governor vetoed a common sense bill expanding the voter registration window in his state. The bottom line is that if the Supreme Court overturns this key part of the historic Voting Rights Act, it would give Republicans even more leeway to pass new voter suppression laws. We can’t let that happen. I wish we were past the year 1965 when it comes to voting rights, but sadly Republicans have demonstrated that they can’t be trusted to protect the democratic process. I’m not going to sit idly by while they take away our rights, and I know you won’t either. Sincerely, Lis Smith Democratic Governors Association |

Honestly...I'm not concerned by this. In fact I'm interested to see if what if anything would really change. I have my suspicions about this topic now but...well, let's just see. |

I honestly don't think it'll change anything. Voting rights are guaranteed by the constitution and there's no way in the 21st century a state would try to enact a poll tax or literacy test which is why the voting rights act was enacted to begin with. Oh wait I forgot, you guys who have a problem with requiring a ID to vote consider paying for an ID a poll tax and disenfranchisement. Forgive me

Indeed Kennyinbmore, The Democratic Party, and the Obama Administration promote an agenda to relax the requirement for showing proof of U.S. citizenship status, showing a valid ID, and the residency requirement to vote in most any jurisdiction. http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-855386 http://articles.latimes.com/2012/sep/02/local/la-me-rod-wright-20120903 http://file.lacounty.gov/lac/charter.pdf Los Angeles County Charter- ARTICLE II. Board of Supervisors: Section 4. The County of Los Angeles shall have a Board of Supervisors consisting of five members, each of whom must be an elector of the district which he represents, must reside therein during his incumbency, must have been such an elector for at least one year immediately preceding his election, and shall be elected by such district. Their terms of office shall be four years, and each shall hold until his successor is elected and qualified. No person while a member of the Board of Supervisors shall receive any compensation, in addition to that provided for by this Section, for services rendered to any public or governmental entity. They shall each receive as compensation for their services a salary, payable monthly from the County Treasury, which shall be the same as that now or hereafter prescribed by law for a judge of the Superior Court in and for the County of Los Angeles, except that retirement benefits shall be those now or hereafter provided by law for officers and employees of the County of Los Angeles. They shall devote all their time during business hours to the faithful service of the public. It is not uncommon to find that a carpetbagger holds office in most any jurisdiction composed of a predominately Black voting electorate, because the Black community rarely scrutinizes the credentials of individuals who run for office. Former Los Angeles County 2nd District Supervisor Yvonne "Brentwood" Burke was in violation of the Los Angeles County Charter the entire time she held office as 2nd District Los Angeles County Supervisor, and few Black voters complained, the few that did were treated as "gadflies". If any one else were to do what "Brentwood" Burke was guilty of doing, he or she would be criminally indicted, fined, and convicted. Any voter who does not meet residency, proof of U.S. citizenship status, other mandated voting requirements, and/or have a basic knowledge of the purpose of government in the U.S., should not be allowed to vote under any circumstances. http://www.ceyseauinc.com/ THE JOB OF A CONGRESSMAN “There are cases where an individual has been wrongfully treated by his government and about the only way, unless the individual resorts to court, and even in some cases the courts are not able to give proper relief, the only area or avenue open to the individual is through his representative. When you find a bona fide error has been made, I suggest that you make a maximum effort to remedy it. This I feel is a vital and important function of those of us in the House of Representatives”. Any adult man or woman paying taxes in this country should be allowed to vote. Any adult period in this country should be allowed to vote as long as you show any proof of who you are. |

Illegal aliens are not supposed to have the right vote, and in many jurisdictions convicted felons are not allowed to vote as well. It is beyond reason as to why any U.S. born Black man or woman would promote ObamaCrat Amnesty, the Dream Act, and/or voting rights for better than 10 million illegal aliens, when U.S. born Black men and women are being displaced in the job market by illegal aliens from around the world. In many former predominately U.S. born descendants of slavery jurisdictions, illegal immigrants are the new property owners, are gainfully employed, etc., etc., while U.S. born Black men, women (including siblings) are unemployed, homeless, and property less. The need for survival to provide the necessities of life, such as food, clothing, and shelter, may cause many U.S. born descendants of slavery to take chances to make money that may not be legal, that can lead to criminal indictment and conviction, for lack of gainful employment opportunity. Illegal aliens aren't rushing to the booth anyways. Convicted felons should be allowed to vote. You are expected to live a normal life and obey the law after you serve your time. Why can't they vote? |

You miss the point, the whole point of promoting Amnesty/Dream act is to make it possible for 10 to 30 million illegal aliens to one day become citizens so he or she can vote, or undercut U.S. citizens for wages, primarily to benefit the political power of the Democratic Party, and not to enhance the economic/political/social influence of U.S. born blacks or the black community. Should and what is actually legally allowed are not the same banana. In some jurisdictions, unless the law changes, slim chance exists that some jurisdictions will ever grant the right to vote to any felon. As you state, for the remaining jurisdictions, after a period of time the right to vote will be reinstated for some convicted felons. Finally, more must be done to improve the quality of life in the inner-city, to reduce the high unemployment rate in the Black community, to competently serve law abiding individuals to keep government or other perpetrators in check, to hold individuals or organizations financially liable for violating the property rights, Constitutional rights and/or other rights of law abiding U.S. born descendants of slavery. These are solutions that will reduce the likelihood of Black men and women committing criminal acts that could possibly result in felonious penal incarceration and being permanently branded with a felony "jacket", that "felon" jacket being much worse than any jail time served, because upon being released from prison, unless given a second chance, felons are also blocked from gainful employment. I commend the Nation of Islam for being one of the few Black organizations that has actually come to the aid of convicted felons from the Black community in need of employment. Without a second chance, without a legal livelihood it is certain that it won't be long before the need for survival causes even the most resourceful individuals to take chances that may result in additional criminal acts, that land him or her back in prison. I commend lawyers from the "Innocence Project" for stepping up to the plate in behalf of Black men and women wrongfully convicted, which has enabled many of these individuals to win mega-buck court settlements so that they can move on in life. Unfortunately our own Black lawyers and elected Black leaders have failed here, and tend to side with perpetrators before stepping up to the plate in behalf of the innocent. http://ireport.cnn.com/docs/DOC-986798 Important concerns that President Barack Obama and other elected Black leaders, Black lawyers do not give a "rat's" hindquarters about. Competency in addressing these important concerns would require respect for the oath of office, the Constitution, the "rule of law", and the rights of law abiding U.S. born descendants of slavery. No you missed the point. The point of the Dream Act and the current immigration bill by the gang of eight was to get these undocumented people documented so we know who they are, how many there are, and where they are. And of course to put them in the tax base. Rubio who's co sponsoring the current immigration reform bill is a Republican not a Democrat. And the last amnesty that was approved was signed by a Republican president Edited by kennyinbmore, Jun 14 2013, 03:24 PM.
