BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — A 96-year-old Buffalo church deacon who was severely beaten during a home invasion last year has died.
Local media outlets report that Levi Clayton died early Wednesday. It wasn't immediately known if the cause of death was linked to the injuries he suffered during the break-in at his Buffalo home last November.
Police say Clayton suffered a broken jaw and other serious injuries when three people forced their way into his house on the night of Nov. 24.
Video from surveillance cameras mounted outside the house showed Clayton tossing a lamp out of a window while trying to keep the intruders at bay.
The retired autoworker and World War II veteran spent several weeks in the hospital after the attack. An 18-year-old man is the only person charged in the home invasion.
BUFFALO (WKBW) Buffalo Police have arrested 18-year-old Justice Feggans and charged him with first degree robbery and burglary.
Police believe Feggans and others broke into 96-year-old Levi Clayton's Longview Avenue home in late November, before beating the elderly man and fleeing the scene with valuables from his home.
"I can tell you that Mr. Clayton is certainly a fighter, but I can also say that it was terrible to see a member of our community in that condition, particularly a senior citizen, after a crime of this nature," Mayor Byron Brown said at a news conference Thursday afternoon.
Feggans was a Riverside basketball star, averaging almost 20 points per game his junior year according to maxpreps.com.
Authorities say Feggans did have a prior criminal history, and is now being held on 250 thousand dollars bail.
Police credit the public's help in the arrest, coming weeks after the crime occurred.
"The tips were instrumental in making this arrest, and they'll be instrumental as we continue in this investigation," Police Commissioner Daniel Derenda said.
Police continue to search for the other suspects in this case, and say this was not a random act of violence.

I just knew it had to be a damned Nigger! How brave, beating a 96 year old man!

Good attempt at deflecting, but let's get back to the story. Anyone, and I mean anyone, that would attack an elderly person that's 96 years old and rob them, is nothing more than an unbridled savage no matter what color he/she is! Even animals do generally attack their own. Naw , what pissed you off,is because he's a Nigger. It's this attitude that so many black people have, "as long as it isn't me, who gives a damn"! Well, keep living, your ass will get old too! I'd like to be around when that happens, but unfortunately I won't! Our morals in this country have dropped to an all time low! I sincerely hope he gets the death penalty. OBTW, I'll just bet you're one of the folks that was so damned upset over Trayvon Martian's untimely death!
If im deflecting because i didnt acknowledge your attempt to sniff out black only crimes. Then wtf are you doing when you choose to stay silent on white crimes. IE, the cracker savage who stabbed 14 random people?
their mistake...especially considering the human condition in this country right now what with high rates of unemployment and neglected mental health, there are so many folks turning to crime. Strap up.
