NYC fast-food workers strike for better pay

About 400 fast food workers in New York City are holding a one-day strike at scores of McDonald's, Domino's, Taco Bell and other fast-food restaurants.

Backed by a union coalition, the workers want the city's fast-food restaurants to pay $15 an hour, arguing they can barely get by on the $7.25-$9 an hour they currently receive.

Numerous restaurants are already closed for the day.

Al Jazeera's Cath Turner reports from New York

No, it's we who have lost our collective minds for defending subsistence wages.

Who decided that the person preparing your food deserves less that the one who collects your garbage?

I don't think every job should pay the same. I don't think any one forces people to take low wage positions. It's your decision to take a low paying job or not.

Regardless, that $15 per hour will drive up the price of that burger and it will all end up relatively the same anyway.

We can certainly say then, that circumstances force people to accept low paying jobs. I don't think all jobs should pay the same either, but I believe that it is inhuman to pay someone a less than livable wage. That speaks to the immoral, arrogant mentality of America as a nation.

Circumstances might force people to take low paying jobs, that's true. I personally know two young people working at least two jobs each to make ends meet. But they're also still in college, planning to do better eventually.

You can graph income on a bell curve. There will always be low income earners and a need for low paying jobs in my opinion. Prices for food and shelter will increase again, and wages will lag behind like they always do.

There are those working 3 jobs, due to the inhumane American system.
