Perhaps we could benefit from a change in diet. Then maybe not. The African DNA has been diluted to the point where I'm not sure the body would recognize or accept the drastic change in nourishment. The American Medical Society is just now recognizing that each culture reacts much differently to some drugs commonly used for medical problems such as Hypertension, Blacks and So.Americans react violently to some derivatives, while other cultures function quite well. I personally think there should be more in depth studies done before we change our diets completely. Just my POV. http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/therootdc/tambra-raye-stevenson-mixing-food-faith-and-black-power-to-teach-about-health/2012/11/15/5309a98e-22c9-11e2-8448-81b1ce7d6978_story.html Edited by 72MiMi, Nov 28 2012, 12:14 PM.

Nice thread. The thing with the medicine is very true, I remember one prescription I had said it wasnt as effective with African American patients on the label and I thought it was interesting. But I like the advocacy for health awareness, its needed in our community. |

That's true. We can. But not from a diet change alone. Physical exercise is equally important. And most importantly, We need to pay more attention to our spiritual needs. And by that I don't mean religion. But to grow and understand more. Selfishness and greed is a life reducing and parasitical disease of the spirit that can be healed with more awareness and understanding. Edited by cisslybee2012, Nov 28 2012, 08:13 PM.

I agree with the health advocacy thing it's needed in America period. I see some people of other cultures that are almost disgustingly overweight. But I'm just not convinced we should change our diet that drastically without some further study. When I read this article the first thing that ran thru my mind was can we grow the same things they eat here?. Would it be the same in terms of nutritional value....considering the soil is different as well as the elements are different. I have a friend who is from S.America and she has problems all the time with medications prescribed for one thing or another. We almost lost her one time due to a severe drug reaction prescribed for Bronchitis. |

What she's doing is good but the people that's really need to hear her message, will she be able to reach them? If a Hip Hop artist was teaching on healthy eating they could reach a lot of people that really need to change their diet.

That's a good question. But not everybody want to hear it. It helps to understand that negativity is more acceptable than positivity. So those who really want to change will find their way to it rather than anybody having to reach anybody whose not ready for it. In other words, Who really need to hear it and want to hear it are two different things, and those who need to hear it aren't as important as those who want to hear it. |
