Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956: Creating the Interstate System By the late 1930s, the pressure for construction of transcontinental superhighways was building. It even reached the White House, where President Franklin D. Roosevelt repeatedly expressed interest in construction of a network of toll superhighways as a way of providing more jobs for people out of work. Congress, too, decided to explore the concept. The Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1938 directed the chief of the Bureau of Public Roads (BPR) to study the feasibility of a six route toll network. The resultant two-part report, Toll Roads and Free Roads, was based on the statewide highway planning surveys and analysis. http://www.nationalatlas.gov/articles/transportation/a_highway.html There are plenty of private companies that are still working because of this act in 1956. People have to make asphalt, concrete, bridges, etc. Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956: Creating the Interstate System http://www.nationalatlas.gov/articles/transportation/a_highway.html |

Actually, the federal government did not "create jobs" just for people out of work. This was during the Cold War era, and one of the main reasons why the roads were built, was to move military troops and equipment around the country. It was also specified that a portion of the highways had to be in a straight line, so B52 Bombers could take off and land if necessary. Invent jobs, no, just carrying out a giant project that people worked on. |

You speak as if you know the whole intent of gov't. I am well aware of why the interstate was built because I work in that area. However, we need people to supply material to maintain the system; thus the gov't created a need for jobs. The gov't started the Internet as a defense project; however, they expanded it to create jobs for people read the article I posted. It is very much like the GPS system and cellular communication. The gov't had it first and then use it to create jobs. |

Well, if you use that excuse, then cannot we say that the ALCAN highway was created to give Black soldiers work? |

The government can give state tax payers dollars to hire police officer and fire fighters. If roads need to be fixed the government can give states money to get those roads fixed, those are pretty much the only knid of jobs that the government can create. |
