And now for the obvious disco connotation, it's so gay! Well, the gay community as a whole embraced this genre first and they never left it. That said, despite the movies a whole lot of black folks, myself included, loved it for the music, it's happiness, and of course all the sexual overtones. Back to the gay thing. Not sure why I Will Survive became a popularized gay anthem but so be it. Good song. My main memories of it was a guy in my dorm who returned home to find his girlfriend moved on to another man. For the next few months, this became his song. |

Here's Diana Ross doing a more obvious gay anthem. I'm Coming Out produced by Edwards and Rodgers from Chic. |

Yes, Cher had a disco hit. She was with Casablanca Records, one of the hottest disco labels at the time. Take Me Home, was a song I liked at the time but it didn't really stand out. It was at a period with so many great disco songs that came out, I kinda took it for granted. Just listen the the instrumentation. Magical |

Here are some more traditional songs that are disco or associated with disco. By the way as i implied previously, don't get caught in catergorizations. Even songs initially released in a different genre would sometimes get re-released as a disco song, often with an extended break and beats if they were club hits. Heatwave, the group every knows for Always and Forever really made it's initial claim to fame with disco hits. Initially with Boogie Nights which was then followed up with Always and Forever. Here's the second big disco hit Groove Line |

Average White Band was a great band. I love a lot of their music and have 3 cds from 'em. Wild Cherry was a one hit wonder but what a hit it turned out to be. Edited by Snidely Whiplash, Dec 13 2012, 02:01 AM.

So here's The Love I Lost. This version from one of the great remixers of the period, Tom Moulton. I mentioned this song in another thread because Teddy Pendergrass, who did this song with Harold Melvin and The Blue Notes, said it was originally written to be a slow song, a ballad. I heard Teddy several years ago on NPR's Fresh Air. In his critique of the lack of imagination and creativity in modern music, he said because they actually had real live musicians as opposed to computers and other mechanical music machines, one of them said the song would work a lot better if it were uptempo. The musicians reworked it and the rest is history. Edited by Snidely Whiplash, Dec 13 2012, 02:09 AM.

And stickin' with the sound of philly as well as a perfect segue from the thread dedicated to stepdads is this song, I'll Always Love My Momma. When originally released in '73 I read it was intended to follow up on the wonderful song, Color Him Father. The re-release I linked here is the disco version from '77 with a longer intro and to my ears just slightly more uptempo. Edited by Snidely Whiplash, Dec 20 2012, 06:40 AM.
