This republican disagree: Former Florida Republican Party chairman Jim Greer in 2008(Credit: AP/Reinhold Matay) In the debate over new laws meant to curb voter fraud in places like Florida, Democrats always charge that Republicans are trying to suppress the vote of liberal voting blocs like blacks and young people, while Republicans just laugh at such ludicrous and offensive accusations. That is, every Republican except for Florida’s former Republican Party chairman Jim Greer, who, scorned by his party and in deep legal trouble, blew the lid off what he claims was a systemic effort to suppress the black vote. In a 630-page deposition recorded over two days in late May, Greer, who is on trial for corruption charges, unloaded a litany of charges against the “whack-a-do, right-wing crazies” in his party, including the effort to suppress the black vote. http://www.salon.com/2012/07/27/fla_republican_we_suppressed_black_votes |

I want to put UTB on ignore with the other trolls and spammers, but the fact that he doesn't know that the act is obvious makes him unintentionally funny. |

What's sad is Back Then is now and you can't move forward staying in the Back Then. Blacks are completely justified to protest this issue just as the republican tea baggers did with healthcare. |

The point is that the republiklan's refrain is that they want to fix something that is obviously not broken. They try to be very clever about it by insisting that getting an ID is as simple as going to the restroom to pee. A lot of people have bought into that idea without understanding the subterfuge and deception involved. Why is what people used in 2008 no longer valid today? What transpired to change that dynamic? In all honesty the republiklans, previously the dixiecrats, have been using nefarious tactics to suppress voting for decades. Like sending out flyers and letters telling people that the date for voting has changed or their polling place is now different, attempts to intimidate the elderly and others who have been wantonly disenfranchised. The way to combat that, in my opinion, is an agressive voter registration drive. I have been working with a group here in Atlanta to do just that. My schedule doesn't allow me to be as active as I'd like to be, but I'm doing whatever I can. Voting is not a privilege, it is a right of every legal citizen of this country. Well, at least it should be. When you stop to actually think about it, attempts at voter suppression in the year 2012 seems almost surreal. |
