So only people who spend their lives chaste deserve monogamous partners? If a monogamous person is willing to be with someone who isn't, isn't that their choice, their business? |

Anybody who chooses to live as a slave is well within their cosmic rights to do so. So you're absolutely right. It is their business.

I already know the vast majority of society holds the double standard. But I said I hope you hold the same view about women and one night stands as you do men. And then you started talking about what society thinks, but I was only speaking of you. Edited by negroplease, Jul 15 2012, 10:50 AM.

Understood and I appreciate your clarification and your POV. However, I caveated my statement with the point that I was simply giving my perspective as a man. I have no illusion that it should be considered as an absolute right or wrong. My comment of what society thinks was not intended to be a deflection from my POV, but rather a supplement to it. My comment is/was my opinion. Nothing more. In the scheme of things, what I think as an individual about whether men should be held to the same standard as women in this regard becomes subordinate to what society thinks in general. That is, that a so called "promiscuous" woman is always going to be viewed through different lenses, mostly negative, than that of a so called "promiscuous" man. I even said that men SHOULD be held to the same standard, but regardless to what I think, the reality is that they won't be. A woman giving it up in a one night stand is going to be viewed as cheap, tawdry and whorish. While with men it will simply be looked upon as it being just a fling. I even know some woemn who see it that way. I'm not suggesting that it validates it. Only that people can see the same thing differently based on their individual mores. I don't make those rules, society at large does. Again, my OPINION, is that women who give it up after a few hours is PERHAPS an indication of a low opinion of themselves because of the potential for greater risks involved for them. My OPINION is that THEY have much more to lose in that situation than men do. There is a story (confirm as true) of a woman (white), who had been drinking and ended up in a one night stand with a man in the back seat of his car, got pregnant. However, and sadly, to this day she never saw the man again and doesn't have a clue who the father of her child is. So a man is not going to have those types of surprises to deal with unless the woman knows where to find him and confronts him with the news. Yes, she was stupid, but it happens probably more often than any of us will know. More importantly, it hammers home the greater risk for woman in one night stands. What if the condom breaks or comes off? What man who was just out for "pussy" is going to want to hear from a woman who could he care less about that she is now pregnant with his child? My questions is why would any woman who has a high opinion and respect for herself risk that? Obviously, the way that I perceive men and women in a one night stand and the impact on their respective reputations, may be viewed as hypocritical, a double standard or even DUMB to you, but it doesn't change my opinion in the matter. Just my perspective and not intended as a universal truth. Didn't mean this protracted "quasi-dissertation", but felt it necessary to explain my perspective on the matter. |

Oh and if a women gets viewed as such in society, she shouldnt care. Going against what society thinks is how we effect change. At one point society didnt think women should vote either. Women should do what they want and what works for them and not be too worried about society and how society tries to dictate their lives. Edited by negroplease, Jul 15 2012, 02:27 PM.
