Remember though that during the 50-60-70s there was nothing but negative portrayals of black people-militant,angry, criminals, lazy, poor, dumb and we had to endure an openly racist media.
How come during those days we did not let the media image of us cause us to stop being good family people, stop believing in ourselves and to loose our pride.
Mal why should what's on tv have anything to do with how we feel about ourselves. There have been plenty of tv shows portraying positive black families since the period you cite. Good Times showed a black responsible father running his two parent household. Sanford and Son and the Jeffersons showed two black businessmen. A Different World showed black college students. The Cosby Show and The Fresh Prince of Bel Air showed well to do black families. I watched all of those show realizing they were just entertainment and had nothing to do with me. Maybe I'm a different kind of black person, I don't know

I have never understood how tv can affect how anyone feels about themselves. Someone did make a good point that tv in some homes has become the new babysitter and fills a gap in homes where parents are not always present as much as they should be.

The Us vs Them mentality was very real & tangible.

We had no choice but to bond together.

Things are much different now, much more subtle.

Now, you don't need Jim Crow & the Klan to subject people physically.

Nowadays, the prefered way is subjugation of the mind. The easiest way to subjugate multiple minds at once is through mass media.

SUA,

After careful, consideration I have to look at who I am talking to. I'm not being insulting.

I would say that both Kenny & yourself are two educated people from good stock.

I would also wager that you both have healthy self-esteem, and probably were never followers.

I am you two got into trouble, but I doubt you were never into anything serious.

I am just trying to demonstrate how the cycle for becoming black trash starts in this particular instance.

I understand if you can't relate. I think that is a good thing. However, it helps that you understand how others, in this particular instance, can start down the wrong path.

Many people that start off entering the criminal element do so because of low self-esteem, and wanting to belong (& be cool). Many people pick up what they think is cool by watching TV.

No, I am not saying that TV makes people criminal.

I am saying that not having a healthy balance between what a child sees in real life, and what is seen on TV & other media can lead to bad behavior.
I totally get that.

I guess, I was just saying I didn't understand how people let media affect them.

But, what you were saying makes sense.

I cant understand it, but I would love to.

It would solve a lot of problems.

Ironically there's plenty of media out there now showing whites in a bad light. Honey Boo Boo, Jersey Shore, Buckwild, Amish Mafia, Sister Wives, jerry Springer. I wonder if whites are affected by those shows?

Like I said, for some families, ignorance is passed from generation to generation.

You have parents & grandparents who never checked a book out of a library.

You have parents that barely graduated high school.

You have parents that barely know basic English & Math.

If these parents have the brain capacity of barely the equal of a high school freshman, and their parents even less than that, how much englightenment can they pass on to their children?

Education was never on the top 5 to do list for many of these families.

So, if education from books were never stressed, these kids had to pick-up their "smarts" from somewhere.

Just because you folks, as educated adults, did not fall for it does not mean others were as fortunate.

I am not talking about educated, enlightened people being brainwashed.

I am talking about people whose immediate reality only stretches from one end of a block to another.

With me saying all this, does it not make sense that one ignorant child would shoot another for stepping on his shoes?

Does it not make sense that a teen girl would fiercely fight another for the affections of some black trash thug who can't function without his mother?

If you want to cure ignorance, it helps to understand it.

Otherwise, you are on the outside looking in shaking your head.

Yes they are Kenny.

Mass Media injected ignorance is not color specific.

You have seen toothless white folks who swear up & down how pure & superior they are, yes?

Just look at the ignorance of a Maury paternity test episode.

You see young girls of all shades determined to let the world now that some lazy, childish male is her baby daddy.

Even if he turned out to be the father, why would procreating with such a moron be something to brag about?

Those shows actually make being ignorant to the uneducated....acceptable.

SUA,

If a person does not have a concrete point of reference, then it would be easy to just accept what they see on TV at face value.

I compare it why I don't like virgins.

A virgin may not know the difference between good & bad companionship & sex. They have no previous point of reference to judge. So, it would be easy for some predator to have their way with a virgin.

Predators who use mass media can manipulate the ignorant masses who fail to educate themselves.

Well there you go Sam.

Now do you feel.sorry for their naivete?

Case in point, yesterday, people had no remorse for women who let themselves.in bad relationships.

Should we feel sorry for people who let media influence them? If you can understand this, can you understand where those women went wrong?

Lol, sorry im going off topic.
