Kenny, I would just say that your mom was perhaps SuperWoman. I have known kids that came from crappy homes, and still made it big. I have known kids from great homes, like your, and still turned out to be trash. |

No doubt, but that wasn't the main point of my post. It's the media and self esteem shit. |

Kenny you would be surprised at how ignorance is pased from generation to generation. Many people take media content at face value. Folks have done so for years. Look at all the books, studies, movies, documentaries, and expert commentary over the last 150 years depicting balcks as less than human. Many white folks took that at face value. So it should not be that hard to imagine uneducated some black families internalizing that crap. You have heard of the black doll/white doll test, yes? It was a test that showed many black children instinctively reached for a white doll to play with instead of a black one. So if some kids are internalizing self-hate that young, just imagine that virus growing unchecked as those kids age. |

I agree what does media portrayals have to do with having pride and high self esteem. The white media has no interest in portraying us in a good light and showing positive images. The image you portray to your children will always be the most important image they see and follow. A report was out a long time ago saying that the media portrays black people as being less family orientated, less church going and less Christian than we are. There are now sadly too many black people who are willing to make fools of themselves on reality tv and these shows are very popular in black homes. |

And that's my point to Sam, when did black people get that weak that their lives are actually influenced by television? I know mine isn't and never has. You can show me all the black pimps, hoes, and drug dealers you want on tv. |

Kenny, Here is a simple example. A hard working mom goes to work eight to ten hours a day. Her kids are well behaved. To pass time, they watch TV. Lots of it. They also play video games. Lots of it. Yes, mom comes home to make sure they are fed, clean, and the homework is done. Where is the time set aside to talk about culture & heritage? Does mom have time to monitor the what the kids are watching? A person can be black trash on TV without having to utter a single profanity. For many kids, the only black history taught is slavery & MLK. It is almost implied that blacks were in Africa just waiting for white folks to enslave them. MLK, a good man that died seeking social change through non-violence. Even this message board carries the belief that the best of times for blacks was the civil rights movement. What so many don't know, or tell you is that those sole two perceived footnotes of the black experience in America are not very flattering ones. Schools are not going in depth to teach black history. The media is not going in depth to teach black history. Parents may not have the knowledge, tools, or time to teach black history. Back when I was in school, and everyone was wearing X-caps, teachers where not trying to even talk about Malcolm X. However, the access to content that paint us as less than human or simply less than other groups is always readily on hand. Where are our youth going to find out about themselves? I am confessed nerd. I went to libraries, bought books on black history & philosophy, and purchased videos as well. I have video tapes of various specials I recorded from PBS & BET (when the station had a political side). Kenny, I know where you are coming from. I am only trying to help you see things from a different perspective. No group of people will view the same thing the same way. You may see a pimp, and think black trash (as I would). Someone else may see a pimp and think, how can I be down? Someone else may see a pimp, and think, that is why I hate my kind. |

You know whats funny about that Sam. It has to be something in the person to make these choices. When I was young, my parents worked alot and I stayed watching music videos and BET. But, I still never looked at the TV and said I want to be like the people on it. It was entertainment. So I guess yea, my parents talking to me had the offsetting effect. I dont know. SUA, After careful, consideration I have to look at who I am talking to. I'm not being insulting. I would say that both Kenny & yourself are two educated people from good stock. I would also wager that you both have healthy self-esteem, and probably were never followers. I am you two got into trouble, but I doubt you were never into anything serious. I am just trying to demonstrate how the cycle for becoming black trash starts in this particular instance. I understand if you can't relate. I think that is a good thing. However, it helps that you understand how others, in this particular instance, can start down the wrong path. Many people that start off entering the criminal element do so because of low self-esteem, and wanting to belong (& be cool). Many people pick up what they think is cool by watching TV. No, I am not saying that TV makes people criminal. I am saying that not having a healthy balance between what a child sees in real life, and what is seen on TV & other media can lead to bad behavior. Remember though that during the 50-60-70s there was nothing but negative portrayals of black people-militant,angry, criminals, lazy, poor, dumb and we had to endure an openly racist media. How come during those days we did not let the media image of us cause us to stop being good family people, stop believing in ourselves and to loose our pride. |
