The Prison University Project is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization which supports the College Program at San Quentin State Prison, an associate's degree program which is the only on-site college program in any prison in the U.S. state of California http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prison_University_Project No one doubts that one of the best ways to rehabilitate criminals is through educating them while they're in prison, but who wants to pay for prisoners to go to college when most people have trouble coughing up money for their own kids' education? Correspondent Bob Simon found one college that does. Bard, an elite private college is offering true liberal arts degrees to some inmates in New York state. It's not what you'd imagine goes on behind the bars of a maximum security prison. And by the way, the program doesn't cost taxpayers a dime. http://www.cbsnews.com/2100-18560_162-2685164.html http://www.educationupdate.com/archives/2005/May/html/FEAT-BehindBars.html Edited by kennyinbmore, Apr 2 2012, 12:58 PM.

Money cannot resolve problems of human behavior. It's literally irrelevant when the solutions are as free as oxygen. |

There is some truth in that comment, people have moved away from spirituality, forming strong family foundations, strong relationships and working on themselves to become better people, these things are all indeed free. A good education, supportive parents, stable environments, self respect and doing the right thing help. |

The truth is you can't throw your money at people who don't want to change. However, for people who want to change a little money to help them along the path could go a long way. The rest of your sentences after the first one I've already commented about and do not feel the need to comment on them, again. I'm sure you understand. |

I do not believe that anyone is beyond change and cannot be reached. Alot of the issues we face are a lack of self belief, lack of pride and not enough confidence. Many of us suffer from self hatred and do not know how to develop feelings of self worth and self esteem. It is hard as men to be honest about what we face, what this society makes us feel about ourselves and how to work through the anger and hurt many of us feel. |

Great points, Mal. Self-respect & courage in the face of the unknown can go a long way to slow down criminal recidivism. |

I saw a really powerful video about this topic. The issue was Is Silence Killing Us. It pointed out that often it is hard for men to face up to what is really bothering and hurting us and often we do not want to open up to anyone not even the women in our lives and tell them the truth. We always have to have our guard up and almost disconnect from our emotions because our manhood is always on the line in this society. From when we enter the work place, on the streets, the police, even in relationships. Women seem to be able to start social groups and clubs where they discuss a wide variety of issues but it is hard for black men to find that same support network. |

You have a good heart Mal, but I think you're reaching for a reason other than what's staring you in the face. The fact is there are just some really bad people out here that just can't be helped no matter how well intentioned you are. |

That is the point I have been trying to get through people like Mal. Some civil service jobs accept ex convicts. I remember when I was 16 years old, and an ex convict got hired over me at a skate rental shop in Santa Monica. The motherfuckers can get right if they want to get right. They get chances damn near thrown at them, but they choose to keep fucking up. That's why I said that I refuse to put in effort to help those motherfuckers. |
