We have to stop being in denial though as what is affecting hundreds of thousands of black men is going to have a detrimental effect on the black community long term. Our communities will become more drug infested, more gang infested, more crime zones, more run down with no hopes of investment, business growth or redevelopment. We are increasingly seeing this in many of our larger cities where too may black people have just been forgotten. Our numbers will decrease, our levels of education will get worse and we will stagnate.
Who's fault is this Mal and who's denying the problems? I ask again, at what point does an individual take charge of their own life? Having unprotected sex, not taking education seriously, drug use, and criminal activities are all self inflicted wounds

No, you say you're better than every damn Black male you come across because you think you're better than every damn Black male you come across.

Mal I feel you but again. This ain't no damn Coach carter 2 or a lean on me. And even still, those were high school students who had the chance to turn it around.

If you are in your late 20s and you are gangs banging it up with No GED. I'm not wasting my time with you. You would think the Straight line of Fs on your report card would let you know. And you can still go get a GED and push a community college.

Mal can you help a 30 year old man with 3 baby momma and all he do is smoke and bullshit the streets?

Personal accountability has a lot to do with one's successes or not.

In the end, it's what you did with yourself that matters most. There are many who had every advantage in life, and yet threw it out for drugs, crime, whatever... And there are many who had no hope of a future but they finished school, stayed out of crime / prison and did well for their families....

That is my own personal humble opinion on the topic.

Like Rick said....putting your life on the line. What are you gonna do? Talk to him everyday? Take time away from your family to help a 30 year old gang banger? Move him in? Use money that could be used for bills and for your family to help a bunch if vice lords?

No I'll pass. And these clowns have free resources they can use, a library and brain

That is the thing, many friends I had that did hard time educated themselves while in prison.

A lot of them came out of prison, and where super-articulate.

I was the only one could communicate with some of them.

The best thing for guys like that is to do community work.

That is, if they really wanted to turn their lives around, and help prevent others from following a destructive path.

I will say, on the other hand, it helps to have someone along for the ride, too. To mentor, to instruct, be it a parent, a teacher, or someone who simply gives a rat's bee-hind.

But when it's all said and over with - it's YOU - the individual, who has to look at him / her self and say, "What did I do for myself?"

I do believe that.

If 6 gang bangers were on a corner and you drove over to "preach" and pass out a card. Go drive back to that corner a few hours later and those cards will be on the ground.

The kids and teenagers IN SCHOOL should be the priority and after that it's game over

I agree. I grew up poor and my mom kept me going in the right direction. However I know several guys I grew up with who not only had their mother around, but also had their father around(a luxury I didn't have) and still became fuck ups. One is doing sixty years for a drug related murder and another is dead from drug related violence. As I've said on several threads, you can't fix stupid.
