Are you surprised? I've actually followed a few of his links AND have blasted him on them. He tends to take whatever the subject of a link is then twist it to whatever he feels hurts Blacks the most. Anyone who has worked with kids know that any fluctuation in intelligence does not come from genetics but mainly due a combination of environment, teachers, PARENTS, and peer pressure . Too many minority students aren't pushed at schools that believe minorities are a waste of time to begin with which in turn causes these students not to give a shit. That's one. Peer pressure and media showcases people who never finished school or portray stupidity to be cool. While this one affects ALL Americans, us minorities leave in a glass house. There are far less of us which means we stick out like a sore thumb. Plus specifically Black children have been bombarded with media, rap and gangsta music, and peer pressure that states it's cool to be stupid and White to be smart which needs to stop. That's two and I guess three together. But the main thing is parents. Parents can overcome all of those obstacles by keeping an interest in what their children are doing in school, ensuring they crack down with those grades start slipping, making sure the teachers aren't pushing them in remedial classes just for being minorities, and setting a good example. A good example doesn't have to be a businessman or someone pulling 6 digits a year. A good example is someone doing the beset they can with what they got. That's four. In regards to your part of the post about school's giving your children better grades than they deserve, I thought that required another paragraph of it's own. Yes, I've seen this happen. And it only helps the teachers and the school who is trying to make themselves look better by fucking over children, minority or otherwise. I am not a huge fan of the "everybody gets an A for trying" new-age rhetoric. In real life even if you try you fail. In school, I'm a bit more lenient. If you try you should at least pass even if that means you got a D plus. But no A for effort. A's for effort and skill. No prizes for mediocrity. But this is a little harder to catch. If you know a little of what your children are going over, proof-read over their work, you might be able to bring it up to a teacher especially if something you looks like D plus work when they got an A minus. If you don't then you might have to take other avenues. I don't know what they would be but I'm sure there's people out there who do. |

So you are only concerned about your family, and not black people as a whole? |

Of course. It's called personal responsibility. You should get some. Just think Marcus, if every black family placed the same importance on education that my family does, we wouldn't be having this conversation

Kenny, no one can begrudge you for taking care you and yours. I think that is very admirable. In an ideal world, all Black parents would take the same kind of interest in their kids as you have in yours. Unfortunately, we do not and never will live in an ideal world. There are kids who need some one to help them when their parents won't or can't. I also feel ya on the education thing. Not to boast, but I come from an educated family as well I have two advanced degrees. I owe all of that to my parents, dedicated teachers and professors and others taking a vested interest in my education. Similarly, my wife and I took a vested interest in our daughter's education. She will receive her MBA this spring. However, I have discovered that all of that is/was not enough for me. I have a deep seated need to give back to the community through mentoring and other endeavors. I've seen the positive affect that mentoring has had on my kids as I call them. I've been fortunate enough to see some of those kids go on to do great things. I'm not trying to take credit for that or give myself some false sense of magnanimity, but I like to think that my mentoring helped since these are kids from single parent families who didn't have the time or resources to dedicate towards their kids education. I've often wondered what road they might have taken if I and others like me weren't giving them the time and attention they so desparately need. |

kennyibmore what if Dr. King was only concerned about his family and nobody else, what if he wasn't concerned about making things better for all blacks, what if Dr. King thought like you where would black people be? |

Kenny it is not about you. This is what is wrong with the black community in that we are only concerned about self. Take me back to the time where we worked together. We never would have had a civil rights movement if it was not for blacks sticking together. |
