DC Editors are nuts. Back in the 1990's, they made Hal Jordan go nuts & turn evil, due to low sales, before killing him off as he sacrificed himself to save the solar system. No one with sense blames the writer for leaving. Some comic fans are weird. The writer who wrote the Hal Jordan fall from grace story received tons of hate mail & death threats for years. A bad or infamous storyline can follow a writer for years. It can follow a character for years. The writer would give interviews where he would openly challenge any of his haters to step to him in the streets, his job, or at comic conventions. Going "gangsta" over comics? Here is another article. THE POLAR OPPOSITE OF "SLOW NEWS WEEK" At this point, it's almost a tradition for me to start begging Marvel and DC on Sunday night to do something controversial on Monday so I'll have something to write about for Tuesday's column. This past week, the entire comics industry got together and decided to fill my coffers early. We haven't had a treasure trove of good material like this in a while. Let's hit the highlights. We start at DC, for something that almost doesn't qualify as "news" since it's nothing new over there. Two more writers, Joshua Hale Fialkov and Andy Diggle, have left high profile assignments shortly after taking them. It was so "shortly" that their first -- and last -- issues haven't come out yet. Bleeding Cool and CBR independently confirmed that Fialkov left over DC's intentions to kill off African-American Green Lantern John Stewart. You would have thought they learned nothing from that time Robert Kirkman killed Freedom Ring in "Marvel Team-Up". And since the last "Death of a Green Lantern" storyline still gets Ron Marz hate mail two decades later, I'm guessing DC Editorial is just a collective glutton for punishment. It's amazing DC can still find people who want to write books for them, the way writers keep jumping and complaining of editorial interference. But DC is skilled at this by now and have replacements lined up almost immediately. Practice makes perfect, I suppose. http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=44493 Edited by Doctor Magnus Warlock, Mar 27 2013, 10:24 AM.

DC Has 'No Plans' to Kill Green Lantern JOHN STEWART By Newsarama Staff posted: 22 March 2013 06:14 pm ET Robert Venditti, the incoming writer of Green Lantern, tweeted late Friday afternoon that there are no plans to kill the Green Lantern named John Stewart, one of their oldest and most prominent black heroes. Alex Segura, DC Comics Executive Director of Publicity followed up on his personal twitter account. "Seeing a lot of unverified reports on this. To clarify: John Stewart is not going anywhere." It was rumored and reported across the comic book media that his editorially mandated death was the reason for writer Joshua Hale Fialkov's departure from both Green Lantern Corps, where Stewart is currently heavily featured, and Red Lanterns. Fialkov officially said only that it was "editorial decisions about the direction of the book that conflicted with the story I was hired to tell, and I felt that it was better to let DC tell their story the way they want." http://www.newsarama.com/comics/dc-no-plans-kill-john-stewart-green-lantern.html |

Say the oath of the Green Lantern, John. Even the Joker knew about the strength of John's love hand with the ladies. You will also see Dwayne McDuffie's name in the credits. |

With Ryan Reynold's depiction of Hal Jordan being a bust with the live action Green Lantern film, many are hopeful for a black actor to play John Stewart on screen. I will post some more scenes featuring John Stewart once I get home. I think part of the reason DC wanted to kill John was to cement Hal Jordan as the "true" Green Lantern. Also, in the current Justice League titles, another black character, Cyborg, is the "black guy" being featured. Perhaps with the black guy quota being filled in Justice League, and DC wanting Hal as the man (despite every GL story showing us that he is the greatest ever), DC felt it was time to let John take a dirt nap. Cyborg is another character from the 1980's. I will post some stuff about him as well. He is a great hero. However, his problem is that he is mostly mechanical, which feeds into the tragedy of his character. His body is mostly a machine (his father literally knows his "offline" switch), but his mind is still human. Victor Stone is such a cyborg, he don't even have to use the bathroom. He has no reproductive organs, so it makes him finding a love interest difficult. Unless they want to go the route of true love transcending the physical which can be done if writers put some effort into it. It has been done with the Fantastic Four character, the Thing. But comics are all about wish fulfillment. Especially now that so many blockbuster films are based on comics. How many guys want to be a cyborg who can't take a dump or a leak in the restroom? Perhaps young kids & some females fans may take a liking to him. |

Speaking of live action films featuring black heroes, Hollywood is in a bit of a pickle. With the wave of hit comic book films, the pressure is on to feature hereos of color. Both Marvel & DC has plenty great characters to choose from. I posted a few videos featuring many black heroines. The crop of black actors in Hollywood today are, well, old. Most of them started in the late 1980's & 1990's are now past 40. Halle Berry, though still a dime piece is in her mid 40's. Even Will Smith is in his 40's. Wesley Snipes, who played Blade & wanted to play the Black Panther (the first black superhero ever) is past his prime & in jail. Even Angela Bassett (who should have played Storm), is no longer a whipper-snapper. I think Don Cheadle is a bit too old to play James Rhodes in the Iron Man films. Denzel & Laurence Fishburne are both over 50. I would rather not see a rapper attempt to play a hero, not even LL Cool J. Most black comic book heroes are men & women under 30 years of age. Yes, we all know that many black folks age slowly & gracefully, but still. This is a great excuse to give up and coming black thespians a try. I am sure you have a slew of attractive young men & women ready to show the world what they can do. Kinda like how Richard Donner found a young & unknown Christopher Reeve to play Superman. In any event, keep Tyler Perry away from the black heroes. |

Interesting Doc. As was mentioned, I was disappointed though not surprised they replaced the black green lantern with Ryan Reynolds in the new movie. It was the same sort of thing they did several years ago when they did a Watergate movie. The real life black security gaurd that discovered the break-in at the watergate hotel was replaced with a white guy in the movie. |

Ryan Reynolds has been itching to be a comic book hero for some time. True, he looks like Hal Jordan, but the film was a mess. Apparently, a deleted scene does feature an actor playing John Stewart. I have the GL film on DVD. I will check the deleted scenes to verify. Green Lantern should have been a space cop version of the film Training Day. The character Sinestro was basically a dirty cop like Denzel, and Hal was a good natured rookie cop like Ethan Hawke. Hal should have exposed Sinestro (who used his ring to be a dictator on his home world), and sent him packing in disgrace. Hal becomes the top GL. Then in the sequel, you have Hal as the veteran who must now train a young rookie GL in John Stewart. They don't see eye to eye, given their backgrounds, but they pull together as partners to save the Earth. You could also introduce Stewart's love interest Katma Tui, who is a denizen from Sinestro's homeworld, and she inherited his power ring also. In the third film, Sinestro returns with his iconic yellow ring of fear, and his own corps, seeking revenge against Hal & the Green Lantern Corps. You could have also introduced another Earth born GL, Guy Gardner. All three scenarios are true to the comic origins & stories. And I am sure these scenarios would have been better than what we got. This is so bad...or perhaps so good. The link below shows the attire of a porn parody of Wonder Woman. What is so odd is how much the custom & porn star looks like the character. Justin Slayer should John Stewart, and show her Green Lantern's light. I must get Felicia Flamingo into that costume down the road. http://blog.newsarama.com/2013/03/26/wonder-woman-xxx-looks-well-kinda-awesome-as-live-action-wonder-women-go/ Edited by Doctor Magnus Warlock, Mar 27 2013, 07:58 PM.

oc, you really got into the comic book stories. In the TV series, I really liked the interaction of all the characters especially, GL, Hawkgirl, and GL's black girlfriend. Can't remember her hero name. Of course I liked the episode where the flash went into this room that turned into a disco It was a nice song they did by the way. Who ever wrote it had the disco feeevah!
