I stop really liking rap around the time that whole East vs West thing started.

Rap used to be such a diverse genre.

You had political rap with KRS-One & Public Enemy.
You had party/dance rap with Kid & Play, Special Ed, & Kwame.
You had rap with strong R&B influence with LL Cool J, Big Daddy Kane, & Heavy D.
You had rap detailing the dangers & struggles of urban life with NWA, Ice T, & Kool G Rapp.
You had your x-rated porn rap with Too Short & 2 Live Crew.
You had your ultra violent rap with the Geto Boys.

Once Rap devolved into East vs West, it seems like all the diversity died.

Everyone started sounding the same.

Everyone talked about the same subjects.
I still only listen to the old school rappers you just mentioned. For some reason I just can't get into new school rappers. Other than Mos Def or Talib Kweli

Yes mos def and talib. Also lupe fiasco and common. But I feel they are trying appeal to the money and switch the style up.

Sort of. Nowadays, the more diverse group of rappers are either Internet Only or really, really underground.

Sort of like if you want to listen to ROCK or METAL and not just some Euro-trash dance music with "Rock" on the label, you either have to go back in time or Youtube it.

What really killed Rap/Rock was it's popularity, then the type of people who wanted to make music. No offence, but after Rappers started to appeal to the "15 year old suburban White kid" everything went to shit. Then Rockers tried to catch up with appealing to the same group and doing what the rappers were doing (In the Club, I hate mah gurlfrend, Bling bling bling, Women r bitches).

After all that happened, the sort of people who wanted to make music turned from members of that obscure yet awesome sounding Metal band into stupid hipsters who were only doing it for the money. That produced "Artists" who had no souls whatsoever and all they could talk about was how much money they were making or how much pussy they were getting.

So you do like some rap.

I don't know about Common, but I know Lupe has said numerious times that he really doesn't like this last album he did. He had some serious issues with his label about the direction the album would take...

I also agree with Sam, there was definitely more variety back in day.

Digging in the crates for this one.

Back in the 1980s, Eddie used to clown the hell out of Michael, so this video was a surprise to many in the early 1990s.

If you want to see the first signs of Eddie Murphy being "sweet" check out his stand-up comedy film, Eddie Murphy: Raw.

I recently posted a music video he did around 1989 on another thread here, "A fool & Money" by my duddy Z. He was looking kinda sweet too. That video also featured Johnny Gill, his long time buddy.

Everyone knew that Eddie went through some kinda change when he did Harlem Nights.
