ComingSoon has snapped quite a few pictures on the set of Netflix's "Luke Cage." The images come from the Marvel show's New York City set and depict Luke Cage (Mike Colter) sitting and posing out in front of a barbershop alongside actor Frankie Faison ("The Wire"). It's not yet been revealed who Faison is playing on the show, although ComingSoon posits he could either be playing the owner of the barbershop or possibly Luke's father.

How Realistic Will Netflix's Luke Cage Be? Mike Colter Says This
BY ADAM HOLMES 2 DAYS AGO

Posted Image

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a fantastical place filled with aliens, unusual technology and magic. However, over on the Netflix side, things have been kept in a more realistic setting. Although the main protagonists in these shows each have their own set of unique abilities, the tone of these series has been less outlandish and more gritty. In the case of Luke Cage, whose powers include super strength and unbreakable skin, things won’t be any different for him on Jessica Jones or his own show.

During an interview with ComicBook, Luke’s star Mike Colter said that he likes that the Marvel Netflix shows are being kept grounded, specifically by using the “less is more” angle. In his words:

What I really liked about it is that this was going to be grounded no matter what. We weren’t going to do something that was going to be ‘wow, I can’t believe this.’ It’s not Lost where it’s a real fantasy situation and you can’t believe what you’re seeing. There are superpowers, but for the most part I think less is more, and it seems like you’re dealing with people who are trying to be low key. I really like the idea that I’m not wearing a costume. I’m a street-level hero and I’m trying to work on saving the community. That’s what it is. It’s really grounded, and I’m really happy about that.

Daredevil set the precedence for how powers are tackled in the Marvel Netflix shows. Think back: that infamous radar sense of his was only ever seen once throughout all of Season 1, and his other enhanced senses never took away from watching him beat up the bad guys. Obviously there are still unusual threats that Luke and the others have to deal with in the streets of New York, but in the grand scheme of things, it’s all being handled as realistically as possible. Luke’s a powerhouse, to be sure, but you won’t see him charging into the same type of battles the Avengers do on the big screen, and his abilities won’t detract from who he is as a character.

When viewers meet Luke Cage in Jessica Jones, he’ll be a man with a mysterious past that Jessica runs into during one of her investigations. He’ll already have his powers, and like Colter said, he’s trying to protect his Harlem community. Following Jessica Jones
, Colter will lead the Luke Cage series, which also stars Alfre Woodard as Mariah Dillard, Theo Rossi as Shades, Mahershala Ali as Cornell "Cottonmouth" Stokes, Simone Missick as Misty Knight and Frank Whaley as Rafael Scarfe.

We’ll see Colter’s Luke for the first time when Jessica Jones premieres on November 20, and his solo series (currently in production) is expected to air sometime in 2016.

Mike Colter reveals timeline for Marvel’s Luke Cage series

Posted Image

Marvel’s Jessica Jones is hitting Netflix on November 20th, and Luke Cage isn’t far behind. It’s safe to assume that the latter will be taking place after the events of the former, but the question is how far after? Mike Colter, who plays Luke Cage, has revealed to ComicBook.com that his series will take place a few months after.

“I can tell you what they’ve allowed me to, which is basically, Luke Cage will take place a few months after Jessica Jones.”

Colter also talks about Luke’s journey as he ends up in Harlem, a nice change of pace from the dominant Hell’s Kitchen for Daredevil and Jessica Jones.

“So in real time, if you watch Jessica Jones, you’ll find [at the end] Luke Cage uptown in Harlem, working, trying to make ends meet,” said Colter.

The Marvel movie heroes like Captain America, Thor and Iron Man are okay with being in the limelight; however, the same can’t be said about the Marvel/Netflix heroes. Daredevil loves working under the cover of night, and Jessica Jones is a private investigator. Luke Cage is also staying under the radar.

Colter explains, “Luke Cage really hasn’t figured out what he’s doing. He’s tending bar, he’s bouncing around. And for good reason, he’s a fugitive, he has some skeletons in his closet. He’s trying to basically stay off the radar. The people he hangs around with, though, are in need. Ultimately, he’d rather be alone, but with the way he’s equipped he does step up. That’s what it’s about, it’s about finding that inner feeling to make you want to take action. Sometimes we just sit around, and sit on our hands and don’t do anything because it’s like ‘hey, that’s not my problem.’ You can’t do that when you’re a superhero. You have these gifts, now use them.”

Luke Cage will premiere on Netflix in 2016.

BLACK PANTHER As Monarch & Hero At Odds With One Another, According to TA-NEHISI COATES
by Chris Arrant, EditorDate: 30 September 2015 Time: 03:30 PM ET

Before Black Panther's cinematic debut in 2016's Captain America: Civil War, he'll be returning to comic book shelves in a new Black Panther series by Ta-Nehisi Coates and Brian Stelfreeze. The 12-part series starts with a terrorist attack in the heart of Wakanda that'll provoke a response from the title character as both a hero and that country's rulers And those two roles are in conflict with one another, Coates confirms.

"Oh man this is so hard to answer without giving anything away. I think what I can say is T’Challa will be immediately challenged and readers will see him pull from his best self to attempt to overcome," said the writer. "Ugh. I know that’s vague. I’m trying make sure plot doesn’t start spilling out my mouth."

Stelfreeze applauds the first-time comic book writer's approach to Black Panther, calling his "rhythm of storytelling" very different.

"I’m always a little nervous when someone comes from other media into writing comics. It’s a unique storytelling form and it requires both talent and respect. My nervousness dissolved when I received Ta-Nehisi’s story outline," said the artist. "It turns out he’s a true fan boy with a willingness to explore the depth and breadth of both the character and his world. His lack of time in the industry also gives him a lack of limitations, and I’m taking great joy in acting as a flashlight to illuminate the path for him and the readers."

Coates revealed that he found this path to comic book writing by pitching to Marvel while covering the company as a journalist for The Atlantic. The writer said while this is his first time doing comic books, his background writing non-fiction as a journalist is all about "storytelling."

"Well, I’ve been storytelling all of my life. It’s true that’s it been in nonfiction for most of my professional life, but the basics of trying to think about what makes for compelling story has been my trade for awhile," said Coates. "I think beyond that I bring some amount of knowledge to the basic questions that must—necessarily—occupy a guy like T’Challa. Having studied history, for instance, I have some sense of the challenges that face monarchs. The key is learning to pull from that, while at the same time making sure T’Challa has people to punch. It can’t be a dissertation."

Black Panther is scheduled to debut sometime in early 2016.

New ‘Different Direction’ BLACK PANTHER #1 - Not a ‘Superhero Script’
by Lan Pitts, Newsarama ContributorDate: 02 October 2015 Time: 06:30 PM ET

Posted Image

Brian Stelfreeze has worked in the comic book industry for over 25 years, but even he'll admit he's never done a book like Black Panther. Last month, Marvel announced that he and mainstream journalist Ta-Nehisi Coates are working on a 12-part series for the Wakandan king timed to coincide with the character's entry into Marvel movies beginning with May's Captain America: Civil War.

Stelfreeze and Coates have set out to "redefine" T'Challa as a monarch and a superhero in this new series, and Newsarama spoke extensively with the artist during his recent appearance at Baltimore Comic-Con.

Newsarama: So, Brian, it was recently announced you’ll be the artist for the new Black Panther series for Marvel. This is your first work at Marvel in a long time, as well. I have to ask, how quickly did you say yes to this assignment?

Posted Image

Brian Stelfreeze: [Laughs] It was pretty quick. You know, the cool thing is I’m working with Wil Moss, he’s the editor that I worked with on Jonah Hex, so we have a great relationship going back when he was working at DC. Because Wil kinda came to me and I trust Wil. Will is a really good guy and I know he would bring me something really cool. When he told me it was going to be Black Panther, that kinda blew me away.

Nrama: This is the first time in a long time that both artist and writer have been persons of color on such a high profile character. I mean, you had Christopher Priest and Mark Texeira on Black Panther in the 90’s, and of course Reginald Hudlin’s run as well. How important is it for you to be working on a title like Black Panther?

Stelfreeze: I think to a certain extent it’s massively important and to another extent, it’s not important at all. I kind of jump back and forth on that. The nice thing about it is that because of who I am and how I grew up and everything, I think that’s going to give me information on the character that’s going to make me able to approach the character in a different way. At the same time, as a creator, I try my best to be invisible.

Nrama: Now, you actually brought both covers to the first issue here at the con. When designing a cover like this, what’s the biggest thing you want to convey?

Stelfreeze: The cool thing is, it’s cover number one. I’ve done a few covers in my career.

Nrama: [Laughs] Oh, have you?

Stelfreeze: [Laughs] Yeah, a little. So it’s kind of a situation where I know that I’m doing a cover to number one so I wanted it to be something spectacular and that captures the character. I sent them in three designs with different looks of the character. One with him being very sort of aggressive, another one where he was a little bit more submissive and it was more about the people of Wakanda. Then there was one where he was the secret protector of Wakanda, and they went with that one, which I think is a great choice for cover number one.

Posted Image

Nrama: Yeah, it almost looks like a propaganda piece with the Wakandan flags burning. It’s interesting you featured the city of Wakanda in the background, because it’s a city of technology and doesn’t get a lot of attention usually on cover designs. Are you designing Wakanda as this city of the future?

Stelfreeze: Actually, no! I’m designing Wakanda with a different eye towards technology. I’m thinking of technology in a different way. I don’t want Wakanda to be Silicon Valley or Dubai, or anything like that. What I want to do is show Wakanda as having technology that was created in a completely different way than technology that we know.

Nrama: So you’ve read the first script written by Ta-Nehisi Coates, a New York Times Best-Seller, no less.

Stelfreeze: Oh, a phenomenal guy!

Posted Image

Nrama: Without giving too much away, what was it about the first issue that made you excited to be on board?

Stelfreeze: The thing that got me really excited about it was when I read it, it wasn’t a superhero script. It wasn’t a bang zoom some guys are robbing a bank and Black Panther is going to jump in and stop them kinda story. I think with superheroes, they all need a specific voice and the Black Panther, I don’t think we’ve really pursued what the Black Panther is all about. Ta-Nehisi’s script goes in a different direction and really explores what is this guy about. What would Wakanda be like if it was a real thing.

Nrama: T’Challa is a legacy character of his own. It’s not a code name, it’s something that’s very important in Wakandan folklore. Will that be played in this new series as well?

Stelfreeze: More than you’d believe.

Posted Image

Nrama: Is there anything new you’re trying to approach that hasn’t been done before with that his decades-old character?

Stelfreeze: Well, the cool thing is that Ta-Nehisi and I, we’re kinda approaching everything very respectfully. We want to make things very believable and want this to be a book that someone who has never read Black Panther before can pick up and really enjoy this. At the same time, we’re both fans so we’re doing something that if you’re a Black Panther fan, you’ll get a nice bit of Easter eggs for you, but this is still something different. I personally think that the Black Panther is a character that is really underdeveloped, so we’re sort of taking the opportunity that Marvel is giving us to do something with him.

Nrama: Is there anything else you’d like to mention about the new Black Panther series?

Stelfreeze: It’s going to be ridiculously cool. That’s pretty much all I can say right now, but we’re always hanging out, so we’ll talk about it a bit later on next year.

What about Sam Wilson?

Anthony Mackie is hilarious!

Anthony Mackie destroyed Chris Evans in a push-up battle
Kelly Lawler, USA TODAY 11:16 a.m. EDT September 28, 2015

While we may have to wait until Captain America: Civil War hits theaters to figure out which of our favorite Marvel heroes would win in a fight, Anthony Mackie apparently already has the answer to who would win in a much more important battle.

While stopping by Salt Lake City Comic-Con, Mackie casually mentioned the fact that on the set of Civil War, he, Chris Evans and Paul Bettany once duked it out to discover who could do the most push-ups. And according to Mackie, the Falcon reigned supreme. How did this superhero bravado match occur? Well it started when Mackie questioned the power of Bettany's character, Vision, which comes from a powerful Infinity Stone in his forehead. Mackie wasn't buying it:

“I’m like ‘Yo Paul, that’s not real, your jewel’s not real. It’s not helping you do push-ups.'”

But that did not stop Bettany from dropping giving 62 push-ups right there. Then Evans apparently came over and casually did 70 push-ups. But that was still not enough to impress Mackie:

“Wow, 70 in one sitting, that’s a lot of push-ups … I want you all to see something. When I got through with my 85 … I’m just saying.”

Well, alrighty then.

Mackie also talked about the possibility that his character or Sebastian Stan's Bucky Barnes could one day take on the mantle of Captain America, as has happened in the comics (since Chris Evans may not want to keep playing Steve Rogers forever):

“I don’t think we need a new Cap. I don’t think Cap needs to change. I think (Stan) would be a great Cap, but then we’re left without Bucky. I think I’d be a great Cap, but then we’re left without a Falcon.”

Artful dodge, sir. Now go back to having the Marvel push-up contests that we dream about (hey, maybe get Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston in on the next one).

You can see Mackie's appearance below:
