Fox should do the right thing, and return the film rights to Marvel.

Fox should actually make more money on the X-Men films, but they woefully underutilized the characters.

"FANTASTIC FOUR" FLOPS WITH $26.2 MILLION 2ND PLACE FINISH
Posted: 2 hours ago | Updated: 2 hours ago

Kiel Phegley, Staff Writer

The final fate of Fox's new "Fantastic Four" is worse than most people expected. Many Hollywood trades are reporting a second-place finish for the Josh Trank action movie, behind a strong performing second week for "Mission Impossible Rogue Nation."

The Hollywood Reporter has the initial estimate for "Fantastic Four's" weekend take at $26.2 million -- well behind the initial $40 million predictions and even behind the adjusted $30 million figure thrown around once a batch of strongly negative reviews hit. That places the film's opening in a bracket with some of the lowest performing superhero movies of the modern age including "Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance" ($22.1 million) and "The Green Hornet" ($33.5 million). Perhaps more notable, it places the film far behind the previous screen iterations of the FF which came in at $56.1 million and $58.1 million almost ten years ago.

What these numbers mean for the future of the franchise is unclear. Fox had already placed a sequel for "Fantastic Four" on the schedule for 2017, though that plan is now in doubt. Perhaps the studio will instead move forward with a plan to merge the characters with the more popular X-Men universe as director Bryan Singer has hinted at.

Stay tuned for an update on the final official numbers for "Fantastic Four."

Netflix's 'Daredevil' Casts Marvel Antihero Elektra for Season 2

Posted Image

French actress Elodie Yung will play the deadly assassin.

Daredevil has found its Elektra.

French actress Elodie Yung will play the Marvel fan favorite for season two of the Netflix drama, Marvel announced Tuesday.

She's described as a mysterious woman from Matt Murdock's (Charlie Cox) past, whose dangerous ways could be more than even the Man Without Fear can handle. In comic book lore, Elektra Natchios is a trained assassin who is sometimes Matt's lover and sometimes his enemy. The sai-wielding antihero was created by Frank Miller and first appeared in 1981's Daredevil No. 168. Jennifer Garner played the antihero in the 2003 Daredevil film and in the 2005 spinoff Elektra.

Yung, who appeared in the 2013 blockbuster G.I. Joe: Retaliation, joins Walking Dead alum Jon Bernthal as The Punisher for season two. In a coincidence, her G.I. Joe character Jinx also sported red and was skilled in using deadly weapons.

“After a worldwide search, we found in Elodie the perfect actress to embody both Elektra’s impressive and deadly physicality, as well as her psychological complexity,” said Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb in a statement. “Paired with Charlie as Matt Murdock, the two will bring one of the most beloved and tumultuous comic book relationships to life with all the accompanying sparks and spectacular action sequences the show is known for.”

Season one Eastereggs had Daredevil fans speculating Elektra would appear in season two. In one episode, Matt and his best friend Foggy (Elden Henson) discussed a Greek girl Matt had once dated (the relationship ended poorly). In the comics, Elektra is daughter of a Greek diplomat.

Daredevil returns to Netflix in 2016 with new showrunners Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez. They replace Steven DeKnight. Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page) and Rosario Dawson (Claire Temple) also return.

'Walking Dead' Star to Play Marvel Favorite the Punisher on Netflix's 'Daredevil'

Jon Bernthal has joined the cast of the Marvel series.

Fanboy overload.

The Walking Dead alum Jon Bernthal has landed a killer role on the second season of Netflix's Daredevil.

Bernthal has been tapped to portray Marvel favorite the Punisher on the series starring Charlie Cox, Marvel announced Tuesday. While series regular vs. recurring details are being kept close to the vest, Bernthal will have what is said to be a big presence on the series.

On Daredevil, the Punisher is a vigilante who aims to clean up New York’s Hell’s Kitchen by any means necessary, no matter how lethal the results. The character is also known as Frank Castle, a martial arts master and U.S. military veteran who is an expert with a variety of weapons and guerrilla warfare.

For Bernthal, the role marks his latest small-screen gig following TNT's Mob City and features Wolf of Wall Street and Fury. He previously starred as another comic book favorite, playing Shane for two seasons on AMC's zombie drama The Walking Dead. He's repped by WME and The Burstein Co.

The Punisher has previously been portrayed on the big screen by Dolph Lundgren (1989), Thomas Jane (2004) and Ray Stevenson (2008).

“Jon Bernthal brings an unmatched intensity to every role he takes on, with a potent blend of power, motivation and vulnerability that will connect with audiences,” Marvel head of TV Jeph Loeb said. “Castle’s appearance will bring dramatic changes to the world of Matt Murdock and nothing will be the same.”

Daredevil returns to Netflix in 2016 with new showrunners Doug Petrie and Marco Ramirez. They replace Steven DeKnight, who was a huge fan of Punisher.

And now I know!

Why Isn't Superwoman Lead Character in "Supergirl"?
http://abcnewsradioonline.com/entertainment-news/why-isnt-superwoman-lead-character-in-supergirl.html

(NEW YORK) -- CBS is launching Supergirl this fall. She's Superman's cousin. So why isn't she Superwoman?

There's been some debate over the name, but Supergirl co-executive producer Ali Adler made it clear to TV critics, "Superwoman is a different character."

Some have speculated, mainly online, that the name Supergirl is demeaning and less authoritative than her male counterpart, but co-EP Greg Berlanti doesn't think so. He said, "We felt like we could sort of take the power of the word back and say, That doesn't just mean 'young' and 'inconsequential.' It should mean 'strong' and 'bold' and that was our hope."

As for Superman, he's talked about a lot in the pilot, but don't plan on seeing him on the show, which debuts in October.

The actor who plays Superman on the big screen, Henry Cavill, offered his two cents on the matter Monday night at the premiere of his new movie, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. He weighed in on the controversy by bringing up Superman's dog.

"That's a tough one," he told ABC Radio. "I think that's based in probably a dated name-calling thing from the comic books but it's also the name of the character. So it's like changing Krypto's name to something else, just because people don't like it anymore."

It Was a Good Day: "Straight Outta Compton" Stars Hit Premiere
http://abcnewsradioonline.com/entertainment-news/it-was-a-good-day-straight-outta-compton-stars-hit-premiere.html

(LOS ANGELES) -- Amidst stepped-up security, the stars of the N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton hit the black carpet in Los Angeles Monday night at the downtown entertainment complex L.A. Live.

The movie not only drew the young stars who portray Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, and the other members of the controversial, groundbreaking rap group, but also their real-life counterparts.

Cube is played by his strikingly similar-looking son O'Shea Jackson, Jr. He told KABC-TV his dad did give him some advice on playing the role: "Don't have me frown all the time, you know?" he said of his father's famous scowl -- now seen in mainstream movies like 22 Jump Street. "Humanize him a little bit."

For his part, Cube the elder calls the movie "the origin story," adding, "This is how N.W.A. came together. You know, there's a lot of entertainment that we've gotten off the N.W.A. family tree and not known, and here's a way to show people where it all comes from."

Director F. Gary Gray has won acclaim for the film, but he's giving a lot of the credit to Universal, which bankrolled the nearly 30 million dollar project. "...To see a studio get behind a movie like this, it's not like just a rap movie. It's treated the way it should be treated. This is American history."

Straight Outta Compton, which also stars Jason Mitchell as the late N.W.A. co-founder Eazy-E, Corey Hawkins, who plays young Dr. Dre, and Paul Giamatti, opens nationwide Friday, Aug. 14.
