Feige Says Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange Not Official, Black Panther 'Big Part' of "Civil War"

Posted: 1 hour ago

This concept art for the MCU's Black Panther was just part of today's big Marvel Studios presentation

On Monday, Benedict Cumberbatch was reported to be entering negotiations to star in the title role of Marvel Studios' "Doctor Strange." On Tuesday, while that film was made official at an announcement-filled Marvel Studios event in Hollywood -- with a release date of Nov. 4, 2016 -- Cumberbatch was not in attendance, nor was his name mentioned in Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige's presentation. At a Q&A with press immediately following the announcements, Feige said it was because a deal has not yet been signed.

"If it were confirmed, we would introduce him today," Feige said.

One casting that is official is Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther. A "Black Panther" film was announced for Nov. 3, 2017, but the character will be seen on-screen a year-and-a-half before then, in May 6, 2016's "Captain America: Civil War."

"He is definitively a big part of 'Civil War,'" Feige told reporters. "We will meet him for the first time in 'Civil War,' in costume."

While a straight adaptation of the 2006-2007 Marvel Comics event series "Civil War" would be impossible to film -- for a lot of important factors, including the integral role played by Spider-Man, under the live-action control of Sony -- Feige stressed that it would stick to similar concepts but be a "Civil War" firmly set in the continuity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and all the films leading up to that point, particularly this year's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" and 2015's "Avengers: Age of Ultron."

"The generalities of the Act are the same," Feige said. "Something happens -- perhaps it's cumulative of things that have happened in all of the movies up to this point -- that has made the governments of the world say, 'We need some oversight of these guys.'"

While the comic book "Civil War" was focused largely around superheroes being compelled to reveal their secret identities, that dynamic doesn't make much sense in the MCU since most of those characters don't have secret identities. "It's not about the secret identity thing as much as it's about 'who reports to who,'" Feige said.

Speaking of Spider-Man, Feige addressed the rumors that Marvel Studios and corporate parent Disney were negotiating with Sony to share the character by some extent by simply stating, "Anything that wasn't specifically and obviously revealed today is either not true at all, or still rumor until it's worked out."

Not announced at Tuesday's event were "Black Widow" or "Hulk" solo films, something that has been widely speculated on in recent years. When asked why Marvel Studios would announce a "Captain Marvel" film -- scheduled for July 6, 2018 -- and not a "Black Widow" movie, Feige said "It's about bringing new characters to the screen. Black Widow couldn't be more important as an Avenger, and her part in 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' is very, very big and further develops and enhances her saga."

Similarly, Feige reminded reporters that Hulk will continue to be a main component of the "Avengers" movies. "Hulk is going to appear in many of those movies, particularly all of those 'Avengers' movies. Mark Ruffalo is on board for all of those films." Yet he didn't close the door on a standalone "Hulk" film -- "We'll see," Feige said. "We'd love to do it. We'd love to find the place to put it. But right now, Hulk will be appearing with his friends in the other films."

As far as the long-mused "Runaways" film, which "Iron Man 3" co-writer Drew Pearce wrote a script for years back, Feige didn't quite close the door, saying, Marvel would "love to do something someday" and it's "always one we talk about" but "we can't make them all."

One crop of new characters that will make their Marvel Studios debut on Nov. 2, 2018 are the "Inhumans." While those characters were introduced in comic books via "Fantastic Four," clearly their origins will be different on the big screen, as 20th Century Fox has long held the live-action rights to the FF. Feige said viewers will see where the Inhumans fit in "sooner than you're expecting," much like how fans will see the "seeds leading to Black Panther, leading to Wakanda, starting very very soon."

"With the Inhumans, there may be Easter eggs before you know it," he added.

Now that Marvel Studios has announced a film with a Black lead character ("Black Panther") and a female lead character ("Captain Marvel"), Feige was asked if minority or female directors were being discussed for those movies. Feige said they are, and that ultimately, "We're always looking for the best filmmakers."

As far as the possibility of characters from Marvel's upcoming street-level Netflix series -- which is set to culminate in a "Defenders" miniseries -- making an appearance in a universe-spanning film like the two-part "Avengers: Infinity War," Feige said, "There are a lot of people from the movies in 'Infinity War,' a lot of it is about space, and a lot about it is about just what happens between now and then." Yet the movies and TV shows "inhabit the same continuity," Fegie pointed out, so, "certainly that opportunity exists."

The timing of Tuesday's announcements at the El Capitan Theatre was somewhat conspicuous, given that it didn't happen at a major event like Comic-Con International in San Diego or Disney's D23 Expo -- and that the news was made less than two weeks after Warner Bros. announced its DC Comics-based slate through 2020. Feige said it was simply a matter of having everything in order.

"We wanted to do this at Comic-Con this year," he said. "Things were not set. Things for 'Civil War' was not set, 'Guardians' had not come out. The comfort with dating a few of the other movies was not set."

Feige further stated that he's not overly concerned with the increasing volume of upcoming superhero films. "I think that's a challenge we've faced for many, many years," he said. "Our plan has never altered. That's why we plant flags as early as we do, to mark some territory. We focus on what we can control."

Finally, Feige spilled on whether or not the originally announced subtitle for 2016's third "Captain America" film -- "Serpent Society," named after a group of snake-themed super villains -- was an indication of future plans, or just joking with fans.

"There are always plans," Feige said. "But mainly, jokes."

Marvel Casts Chadwick Boseman as 'Black Panther'
11:35 AM PDT 10/28/2014 by Graeme McMillan

The 'Get On Up' actor will play T'Challa, head of Wakanda

Chadwick Boseman will be Marvel Studios' first solo lead of color, with the news that he will take the title role in the newly announced Black Panther movie, one of several new titles revealed at this morning’s Marvel Studios event at the El Capitan Theatre in Los Angeles.

Boseman will play T’Challa, the head of the fictional African nation of Wakanda, in the movie, which is scheduled to be released Nov. 3, 2017. The Black Panther — created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby — was a long-serving member of the Avengers who also enjoyed multiple critically acclaimed solo runs throughout his 48-year history.

Boseman is best known for his roles in 42 and Get On Up, playing Jackie Robinson and James Brown, respectively. He's repped by Greene & Associates Talent Agency, Management 360 and Ziffren Brittenham.

While no other information about the project was released at the event, the studio reveal show concept art for the character, shared on Twitter by Marvel’s Ryan Penagos.

The character will debut in 2016's third Captain America movie, according to Feige, which has been given the title Captain America: Civil War.

UPDATED: Marvel Studios is unveiling its Phase 3 superhero slate right now at the El Capitan theater, where it just officially announced Doctor Strange, which will have a November 4, 2016, release date. (We broke the news yesterday that Benedict Cumberbatch is the choice to front the new franchise.) Also new to the Marvel lineup is Black Panther, which has been slated for November 3, 2017, and will star Chadwick Boseman; Captain Marvel, who has gone by several monikers, but this one is the Carol Danvers version, meaning this will be Marvel’s first female superhero pic; and The Inhumans set for November 2, 2018.

Marvel President Kevin Feige said Boseman, who showed up for the presentation as did Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans, will be introduced in Civil War “in costume.” Downey and Evans did a bit onstage at where they were fighting over who gets Black Panther on their side.

Marvel’s already been planting clues of Black Panther’s involvement in Phase 3, Feige teased today. It’s a huge get for Boseman, who emerged in larger than life leading parts playing Jackie Robinson in 42 and James Brown in Get On Up. He’s repped by Greene & Associates and Management 360.

Meanwhile, Captain Marvel will mark Marvel’s first toplining female superhero. Although a standalone Black Widow film starring Scarlett Johansson has been rumored – or just hoped for by fans – Feige said for now Marvel’s plan for Black Widow, and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, will be relegated to key roles in the Avengers films. Feige added that a writer and director will likely be announced soon before they cast the lead.

Here’s Marvel’s updated release slate:

May 5, 2015: Avengers: Age Of Ultron
July 17, 2015: Ant-Man

May 6, 2016: Captain America: Civil War
November 4, 2016: Doctor Strange

May 5, 2017: Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 (previously July 28, 2017)
July 28, 2017: Thor: Ragnarok
November 3, 2017: Black Panther

May 4, 2018: Avengers: Infinity War – Part I
July 6, 2018: Captain Marvel
November 2, 2018: The Inhumans

May 3, 2019: Avengers: Infinity War – Part II

Chadwick Boseman Signed For 5 Films As Black Panther, Captain Marvel Bring Diversity To Superhero Slate

by Jen Yamato

EXCLUSIVE: After 10 films and $7 billion, Marvel Studios is finally stepping up the diversity in their long-range superhero slate. Introduced onstage today alongside Avengers stars Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, 42‘s Chadwick Boseman will be the first African-American superhero to lead a stand-alone Marvel tentpole in 2017’s Black Panther. I hear he’s signed a lucrative five-film deal that begins with 2016’s Captain America: Civil War continues through Marvel’s just-unveiled Phase 3 lineup.

Boseman joins other diverse characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but is the first to get his own standalone and that is notable. There have been rumors of Anthony Mackie and his supporting Falcon character taking over the Captain America shield from Chris Evans in some capacity after Avengers 3, which has been titled Avengers: Infinity War and split into two parts. Boseman is repped by Greene & Associates and Management 360.

The progressivism marched on today as Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige surprised fans by announcing a Captain Marvel movie for 2018, which will mark the studio’s first stand-alone female superheroine. While Warner Bros. and DC have Gal Gadot set to play Wonder Woman in her own film and Sony’s trying to mine their Spider-Man holdings for a female superhero, Marvel fans have been clamoring for a superheroine to get her own spotlight. There’s already one well-established in the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow. But don’t hold your breath for that character to get her own adventure, says Feige.

“Black Widow couldn’t be more important as an Avenger, but like Hulk the Avengers films will be the films where they play a primary role,” said Feige. “Her part in Avengers: Age Of Ultron is very, very big and further develops her character. The plans we have for her through the rest of the Avengers saga are very big and she is a linchpin, in fact, to those films. So instead of taking her out there or doing a prequel which we haven’t done yet, we’re continuing the forward momentum of the continuity of the Cinematic Universe, of which Widow is a key part.”

Captain Marvel will instead introduce another popular comics character to the MCU while building on the thematic threads established during Phase 3. The Carol Danvers character appears in Marvel’s Civil War comic series, which splits superherodom into two factions supporting and opposing the government’s Superhuman Registration Act. Those sides are led by Iron Man and Captain America, whose growing rift is seeded in a scene from Joss Whedon’s Avengers: Age Of Ultron that Feige showed to fans at Hollywood’s El Capitan this morning.

Captain Marvel also unites the two elemental strains of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which the success of Guardians Of The Galaxy helped open the door for. “This film has been in the works almost as long as Doctor Strange or Guardians Of The Galaxy, and one of the key things was figuring out what we wanted to do with it,” said Feige. “Her adventures are very earthbound, but her powers are based in the cosmic realm.”

Asked if Marvel would hire African-American or female directors to match Black Panther and Captain Marvel, Feige played it cool. “We’re looking for the best directors possible,” he said, acknowledging that producer-director Reginald Hudlin is one filmmaker with Marvel ties. The Django Unchained producer actually penned the Black Panther comics in the 2000s. “Reggie I’ve known for many years and is a great guy — I think I’m meeting him again shortly.”

Finally, a hero of color will headline a feature film. We have not seen that since Blade. Before making Blade, Wesley Snipes tried to make a Black Panther film. It would be great id Wesley can be featured in a cameo.

I am also quite pleased that Captain Marvel will feature in a solo film, as well.

In the comics, Carol Danvers has an off-again/on-again romance with James Rhodes aka War Machine/Iron Patriot. James Rhodes is played by Don Cheadle in the Marvel films.

It would be cool if their romance is featured in the Marvel films, too.
