'Spider-Woman #1' has a special variant cover that is causing some controversy for some reason

Good news: Marvel has a new comic book starring a female character! Better news: That female character is Spider-Woman, a.k.a. Jessica Drew, a severely underrated B-lister who hasn’t had a solo non-limited series since the late ’70s. Best news: Spider-Woman will team up Jessica with Silk, another female superhero, therefore all-but-assuring that Spider-Woman will be passing the Bechdel Test all over the place.

Woohoo, Marvel! Woohoo, strong female character! Woohoo, illustrations of those strong female characters posing with strength and femininity! Why, just look at this variant cover of Spider-Woman #1 by Milo Manara:

Posted Image

Yep, there’s ol’ Spider-Woman, just hangin’ out on the side of a building, as one does.

Thrusting her posterior high in the air, as one does.

And her legs spread all akimbo, as legs so often are.

And also her costume appears to be painted or possibly even just tattooed on.

And I guess she’s in a crawling position, even though she’s clearly perched on a ledge, so she doesn’t really need to do the whole “wall-crawling” thing.

And I guess that, like, theoretically, if you were in one of those buildings behind her, and you happened to cast a glance across the street, you might let out a gasp and exclaim, “Great Scott! For a second there, I thought I saw an adolescent fantasy of subservient womanhood crawling across that building over there! I sure am glad that was just a trick of the light, because it would be really crazy if I had seen a nude red giant super-butt in a nominally family-friendly situation! Why, if I had seen something like that, I might start thinking to myself that this is exactly the kind of thing that happens in a male-dominated industry–the sort of thing that probably wouldn’t happen if there were, like, a couple women in the room to point out when something looks desperately wrong. Glad I didn’t see anything like that!”

Anyhow, some people are upset about this for some reason. For comparison’s sake, here’s the regular cover:

That cover caused quite the uproar, and deservedly so.

Andy Serkis Rumored To Be Playing Ulysses Klaw In Avengers: Age Of Ultron
By Joe Comicbook

With the release of the Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer, it looks like Andy Serkis role in the film might have been revealed. It was known that Serkis was playing a role in the film in addition to being a motion capture consultant, but his role had been a secret.

Rumors had circulated that he would be playing Ulysses Klaw, and the Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer does show Serkis looking very much like the animated version of Ulysses Klaw. If Serkis is indeed Ulysses Klaw, it is important for another very big reason. Klaw is the arch-enemy of the Black Panther, which would suggest that Black Panther might be introduced in the film as well. Could Marvel Studios have cast an actor as Black Panther and managed to keep it secret during filming?

Avengers: Age of Ultron is scheduled to be released in movie theaters on May 1, 2015.

Did the Avengers: Age of Ultron Trailer Tease a Black Panther Film?

By Russ Burlingame
10/23/2014

Fans are buzzing about the idea that last night's Avengers: Age of Ultron teaser trailer might confirm what many already suspected: that part of the film takes place in Wakanda, or at least sets up the team to head there in a later installment, promising the first on-screen appearance of Black Panther sooner than later.

Black Panter is also T'Challa, the leader of the mineral-rich nation of Wakanda and the latest in a line of costumed defenders of the country. His archenemy, Ulysses Klaw, seemed to appear in last night's trailer for the upcoming Avengers sequel in the form of The Hobbit's Andy Serkis.

After numerous "confirmations" from Stan Lee, who seems to be "in the know" but whose word doesn't mean a lot since he doesn't work for Marvel Studios and isn't always privy when things are going to change, the existence of Klaw seems to be the first really definitive clue that Black Panther is coming.

Posted Image

(Okay, so yeah, Feige has said that the movie was "absolutely in development," but we mean coming imminently!)

And that first, definitive clue is important; it wasn't long between when the words "Stephen Strange" were uttered onscreen in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and when Marvel had a director for that film.

Lee recently suggested that Black Panther could be their next new property after Doctor Strange. Feige hasn't commented on when a female or non-white character would be introduced, saying only that the company wouldn't allow themselves to be pressured into expediting the process.

That said, this isn't the first indication that the character's world exists; as far back as Iron Man 2, we've seen references to the fictional African nation ruled by T'Challa. There have also been references on Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., including one as recently as three weeks ago in the season premiere (although there's some doubt in the comments thread as to whether that one counts).

The following week in "Heavy is the Head," there was a reference to "Operation Panther Claw," although it's not clear whether that might have been a wink-and-a-nod to the fans, a reference to the real-life British-led military operation in Afghanistan or both.

Posted Image

erhaps the key moment that tells us when we might meet Panther comes not when Ulysses Klaw is onscreen but rather when Captain America's shield is seen shattered. After all, there are few places in the Marvel Universe you can get vibranium, the super-strong metal from which the shield was forged. Wakanda is basically the only place you can get it in any kind of quantity, which means a broken shield probably implies a trip to Africa to get it patched up.

Avengers: Age of Ultron will be in U.S. theaters in May.

Avengers: Age of Ultron - Who Is Ulysses Klaw?

Posted Image

When Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer dropped, speculation started as to who Andy Serkis (above left) of The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and general motion capture awesomeness fame would be playing and what it meant for the future of Marvel’s cinematic universe, particularly as relates to the Black Panther. In fact, we did our own piece speculating on whether Serkis’ appearance would be as the character Ulysses Klaw and whether that meant that a Black Panther film could be far behind.

Following this line of thought, we figured we’d take it to its next logical step and delve into this minor Marvel malefactor. Ulysses Klaw first appeared in issue 53 of Fantastic Four and his backstory is irrevocably tied in with that of T’Challa, otherwise known as the Black Panther. Hailing from the fictional African nation of Wakanda, T’Challa is the king of this isolationist, wealthy, and technologically advanced locale. How entwined are these two characters? Well, T’Challa inherited the kingship after Klaw killed his father T’Chaka.

Posted Image

Why did Klaw kill his father? Vibranium. Yup, that magical mineral that makes up Captain America’s mighty shield can only be found in Wakanda and Klaw wanted to get his hands on it. It was deposited in that country via meteorite many thousands of years ago and is both the source of Wakanda’s wealth as well as a great deal of conflict. The fact that the Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer showed Cap’s broken buffer is another reason why folks are speculating as to the coming appearances of Klaw and T’Challa because who do you see when you need to fix a vibranium shield other than the person who controls the world’s supply of the stuff?

Getting back to Klaw, he wanted to vibranium for its unique sound-based properties which Klaw, the self-named Master of Sound felt that he could exploit for money and power. Following the murder of T’Chaka though, his plans were first foiled by T’Challa who had gotten his hands on Klaw’s own sound blaster and used it on Klaw and his men, particularly destroying the villain’s right hand.

Posted Image

It wasn’t long though before Klaw was back and menacing the Wakandan people though, sending creatures composed of solid sound (just go with it) to attack them. Once again though, T’Challa defeated Klaw, now outfitted with a sound powered and/or activated glove. While we have a good look at Klaw here, take a moment to note his appearance. With that scraggily hair and take particular form of beard, he’s almost a dead ringer for Andy Serkis in the image shown in the trailer, the apparently khaki shirt supporting the “Great White Hunter” image that Klaw sported in his initial appearance.

Posted Image

Following this defeat, Klaw jumped into the sound transformer that had been creating his sound-based creatures and found himself transformed into a being made of living sound, still sporting his “force glove.” Being composed of solid sound, Klaw in his altered state has superhuman strength and durability. Additionally, his prosthetic glove, improved upon following Klaw’s makeover, is now capable of such feats as projecting high-volume sonic waves, creating blasts of concussive force, and creating solid sound-based constructs. In the comics, it has been demonstrated that Klaw’s body is in fact amazingly resilient in that it can be separated into many pieces without actually killing him and can be fused back together simply by bringing the bits back together. Additionally, he no longer requires food, rest, or oxygen.

Posted Image

It should probably be noted that Klaw’s origin and background have been significantly expanded upon since his initial appearance. However, the essential elements remain consistent and his enmity with the Black Panther is one of his defining characteristics. Beyond this, he seems to have few defining characteristics or long-term plans beyond the acquisition of power and influence.

It should also be noted that while Klaw and his prosthetic weapon (pictured from the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe #15) constitute a formidable adversary, he does have a fairly glaring weak spot. In an ironic twist, the very element that he once sought now generally serves as his undoing.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Vibranium and its unique vibration and kinetic energy-absorbing properties make it a potent foil for Klaw’s sound-based form. Often something as simple as a set of vibranium knuckle-dusters is sufficient to make quick work of the “Master of Sound.”

So, is Andy Serkis playing Klaw and does this mean that we can all start looking forward to a Black Panther movie? Only time will tell but we can certainly hope!

Marvel Studios Announces "Captain Marvel," "Black Panther," "Avengers: Infinity War"

Posted: 2 hours ago | Updated: 29 minutes ago

When Marvel Studios talks, people listen -- a six-year track record as one of the most consistently successful franchises in box office history tends to do that. So when it became public that Marvel Studios had planned a event -- open to press and lucky fans -- to take place midday Tuesday at the Disney-owned El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood but with no further details released, observers were understandably curious.

After all, it's been an eventful few days for the studio -- the highly anticipated initial "Avengers: Age of Ultron" trailer landed online last week a few days earlier than expected (first through a leak, then by official means), and on Monday reports surfaced that "Sherlock" star Beneditch Cumberbatch was entering negotiations to play the title role in "Doctor Strange," after months of rumors and speculation as to who might fill that cloak.

Whether or not this event has anything to do with either of those two things is, of course, up in the air -- as, again, Marvel has been very tight-lipped as to what's planned for the presentation. But CBR News is there live -- things are slated to start around 11 a.m. Pacific -- so keep hitting refresh for the latest updates, unless a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent confiscates our laptop.

Following the El Capitan's customary organ concert and elaborate curtain rise, the event started with the Marvel Studios opening sequence, and the arrival of Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, out to a warm reception. "I want to start with something you've already seen, thanks to the fine people of Hydra," Feige said. Of course, that was a reference to the "Avengers: Age of Ultron" trailer, which then played on the big screen.

After the trailer, Feige pointed out that "Age of Ultron" writer/director Joss Whedon was in the audience, which the crowd was very happy to hear. Feige mentioned that "Guardians of the Galaxy" was the 10th Marvel Studios film -- and the highest-grossing domestic movie of 2014 thus far -- something that "blows his mind." "What James Gunn did with that movie exceeded all of our expectations," Feigie added.

Feige also briefly talked the upcoming release of "Ant-Man," set for July 17, 2015. But he said he wasn't there to tell people things they already knew.

"Let's talk about Phase Three," Feige said. First revelation: The full title of the third "Captain America" film is "Captain America: Serpent Society," which is scheduled for May 6, 2016.

Announced officially for Nov. 4, 2016: "Doctor Strange," which gets a logo reveal on the screen. "I think I've been talking about 'Doctor Strange' since the day I was born," Feige said. "Because I love it, because it's very important to us, and because it takes us a while to work on these movies.

Posted Image

"Guardians of the Galaxy 2" has a new release date: May 5, 2017. The film was originally announced for July of that year. A short video from Gunn plays on the screen, telling the fans he wanted to spend the "whole summer" with them.

Posted Image

Coming in July 28, 2017: "Thor: Ragnarok."

"Chris Hemsworth is returning as Thor, of course Tom HIddleston returning as Loki," Feige said. "This is a very important movie for us in the Phase Three timeline," he continued, comparing it to how "Captain America: Winter Soldier" also changed the course of Marvel Studios. The film will pick up where things are left off for Thor in "Avengers: Age of Ultron."

Posted Image

"Black Panther" is made official for Nov. 3, 2017 -- "T'Challa himself, and all of Wakanda" -- is coming to theaters on . "We have already started seeding things in the films leading up to this moment," Feige said, calling Black Panther one of the most exciting and integral Marvel characters. The film will be about the "isolationist nation" of Wakanda meeting the rest of the world, which may go well and may not.

Posted Image

Another new character joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe: "Captain Marvel," set for July 6, 2018. "I want to make it very clear that this Captain Marvel's name is Carol Danvers," Feige said. This film has been in development almost as long as "Guardians of the Galaxy," according to Feige, who said the character straddles two worlds -- Earth-bound origins and outer space adventures.

Also in 2018: "Inhumans," which is set for Nov. 2, 2018.

Posted Image

Posted Image

If that weren't enough, the Marvel Studios head announced a slew of new films that are sure to excite fans -- by way of an Infinity Gauntlet onscreen with the next two "Avengers" films on the stack: "Avengers: Infinity War" parts one and two -- Part 1 hits May 2018, Part 2 in May 2019.

Posted Image

In fact, that wasn't even close to all: Feige was joking about the subtitle for the "Captain America" movie, and confirmed that "Captain America 3" is actually "Captain America: Civil War."

Posted Image

Chadwick Boseman was confirmed as playing the Black Panther, and came onstage alongside Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans.

"I'm blessed to be a part of this Marvel Universe, to work with you both and to make magic together," Boseman said.

Plus, if you want a first look at the Marvel Cinematic Universe design for T'Challa, Marvel has you covered:

Posted Image

Feige signed off, saying "We have a lot of work to do." With a film slate going all the way through 2019 and two fan-favorites confirmed to join the Marvel film universe, that statement certainly rings true.
