Here are more Cage & Iron Fist goodness.

Here they are with the Scott Lang Ant-Man incarnation, soon to be played by Paul Rudd in a feature film.

Here they are with their buddy, Daredevil. Daredevil is known for being a horny little devil. I wonder what Danny will think when he finds out Daredevil has been creeping with his ex, Misty?

Cage, Iron Fist, Spider-Man, and a trio of white women. Eat your heart out, Jimmy Lee. The brunette is Cage's wife, Jessica.

Cage, Fist, Daredevil, and Spider-Man.

Here is a page from their first meeting. In comics, heroes normally have what is called a "misunderstanding brawl" with each other before teaming up.

Posted Image

Back in the day, Cage & Iron Fist used to take turns beating the feces out of Sabretooth. Wolverine should take notes.

Who Should Play Daredevil in the New Marvel / Netflix Series?
With the news of a new 13-episode Daredevil series coming in 2015, we play the phantom casting game. So who should be Netflix's Matt Murdock?

by Matt Fowler NOVEMBER 8, 2013

It's funny to think that before yesterday morning this "Who Should Play the Next Daredevil?" feature would have been a movies-related story. But the word came down, from high atop Nerdtopia, that Disney and Netflix were partnering for FOUR NEW MARVEL TV SHOWS - Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Jessica Jones - leading up to a Defenders mini-series. And possibly even new feature films for the series characters!

Posted Image

So now we get to play the "Who Should Be Daredevil?" game for TV. Or, err, online streaming series. You know what I mean. And looking for a guy to play blind attorney Matt Murdock - the new "Man Without Fear" - is tricky. You need someone able to kick ass at night, defending the denizens of Hell's Kitchen, while also acting as a crusading trial lawyer during the day. Plus, loads of Irish Catholic guilt about his dead boxer father. Basically, a bunch of stuff that will play out way better on an extended series than in a single movie (same could be said of Punisher). This is a high profile project that's sure to attract TV and movie actors alike - further obliterating the lines between the two distinctions. So how young do we go? How old can we go? How obscure do we get? Fun questions to ponder while we play "Make Me a New Matt Murdock!"

Here's a quick sampling of who could/should land the role:

Joel Kinnaman
Posted Image

This Swedish-American actor is no stranger to TV (stealing scenes on three seasons of AMC's The Killing) or blockbuster movies (he can be seen as the new Robocop in… the new Robocop). He's charismatic, angsty and is filled with a indescribable toughness that would fit the Daredevil role perfectly. He'd also look great with a cane. Nothing I know personally, just from my little sketches of him with a cane.

Richard Madden
Posted Image

Who better to go head to head with New York's most corrupt and violent criminals than the King of the North who waged war against the cruel, opportunistic Lannisters on HBO's Game of Thrones? Talk about uphill battles. And with all the puppet strings Tywin Lannister yanks around on a daily basis, similarities can certainly be drawn to The Kingpin, Wilson Fisk. Plus, there's the whole "avenging your murdered father" deal. Not that everything about Richard Madden has to be thematically on-the-nose as it just so happens he's also a terrific actor.

Strike Back's Sullivan Stapleton or Philip Winchester
Posted Image

Sort of an "either/or" here. Hard to pick. Stapleton (an Aussie) can do an American accent and Winchester (who plays the Brit) IS American. Plus, no one on TV takes harder bumps during a crazy, chaotic globe-trotting production schedule like these two. They're built to last. Both perfectly embodying the broken, bruised, battle-worn soldier who still lets up in the morning to put themselves through hell all over again.

Strike Back is returning for one final season on Cinemax, with Stapleton and Winchester assumedly on board, though deals aren't closed yet. Looks like they might be holding out for STRIKE BUCKS! (note: Eric Goldman demanded I use that joke). After this final season through, they'd be free. It all depends when the Daredevil show starts shooting. And when we put the two of them into Thunderdome to fight each other for the role.

Shane West
Posted Image

Again, I'm sort of ignoring current schedules here. I'm not readily picking guys who are currently on shows, but it's going to happen. This is a "Dream Feature" after all. Nikita has already wrapped its final season, and Shane West has already signed on for WGN America's first original series, Salem, but I can't ignore that he'd be perfect for Murdock. And it really was his recent gig on Nikita that solidified him as one of those rare performers who can blend high-octane action and heartfelt drama. You can totally picture him both taking out street thugs and working his charm on a court room jury.

Garrett Hedlund
Posted Image

As a movie actor who's flexed his muscles in both big sci-fi/fantasy roles (Tron: Legacy, Eragon) and smaller, more-intimate flicks (On the Road, Inside Llewyn Davis), Garrett Hedlund could have easily taken a cheaper path to stardom. Having recently turned down the lead role in 50 Shades of Grey, his interest in more interesting and cerebral projects has kept him on a more eclectic road. He's part leading man and part character actor, which is exactly what Daredevil needs.

Dan Stevens
Posted Image

Oh, look. It's Johnny Downton Abbey!

Hear me out. Just because Stevens has spent the past few years sitting at a lavish dining table and enduring Maggie Smith's passive-aggressive quips doesn't mean he's not equipped to go darker and deeper. In fact, the guy could use a bit of dirt under his fingernails. And let's not forget that (former attorney) Mr. Matthew Crawley was a World War I hero, who thought himself paralyzed for a long stretch of months, falling into a hefty depression. He's my Masterpiece Theater pick (since the role will most likely go to a semi-obscure Brit, but more on that later).

Michael C. Hall or Damian Lewis
Posted Image

Not that Showtime stars Michael C. Hall and Damian Lewis are ancient and wizened, but they're both solid actors who make us ask "How old is Matt Murdock allowed to be?" Comparably, Iron Man's Robert Downey Jr. is no spring chicken himself - proof that age might not be an issue at all.

But let's also consider that Daredevil isn't being made for primetime network TV. This Daredevil series might not have the same pressures to cast a young, hunky lead like FOX's Gotham will probably have when choosing its new Jim Gordon. This Netflix series isn't going to live and die by live TV ratings. It can go darker. It can cast older, or at least take more risks with its choices. It might not contain "content for mature audiences" like, say, premium cable shows, but it also doesn't have to follow the normal, bland-ish TV blueprint.

And to deal with the "But would he be available? issue, yes, Lewis is currently still a series regular on Homeland, but the producers keep saying that could change.

Simon McEngland

It's fun to phantom cast shows based on comic books. Most often, everyone already has their own personal choices ready - someone they've been wanting to see (for a long time) take over a particular role on screen. But let's face it - The role is probably going to go to an English actor who only a handful of us have ever heard of. The star of some BBC series (Spies and Scones, The Thirsty Groundskeeper, etc.) that's never aired in the States. And he'll be great because he'll have been picked solely on his acting ability (and his amazing skill of doing an American accent better than most Americans).

Well, this is HIS slot. Right here. And I'm already saying he'll be amazing.

So who would you guys like to see play the new Daredevil?

Casting Marvel and Netflix's Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Jessica Jones TV Series
We played the phantom casting game with Daredevil and now it's time to pick the rest. Who should play Cage, Fist and Jones?

by Matt Fowler NOVEMBER 13, 2013

Last week, after Marvel and Netflix announced the nerdpocalypse news of four new superhero series (Daredevil, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Jessica Jones), we here at IGN launched into phantom casting mode and ran a quick piece about who we thought could/should/would play the role of Matt Murdock/Daredevil.

Who Should Play Daredevil in the Marvel/Netflix Series?

Now it's time to cast the rest!

Because we're gonna need a couple of Exploitation Cinema-inspired Heroes For Hire in ex-con Luke Cage and moneybags-turned-vigilante Iron Fist, as well as an ex-superhero turned P.I. in Jessica Jones. And again, as mentioned in the Daredevil casting piece, the chances of the producers going with an "unknown" to keep costs down and create more of a "brand" with the character is highly likely. And yet, these dream-casting pieces are always filled with "names," both big and middling - and sometimes already working on other projects that would preclude them from joining another series. This one won't be much different since half the fun is envisioning established stars taking on iconic roles. But just keep in mind that this is in no way a casting prediction piece.

So let's talk about who should play Cage, Fist and Jones!

Luke Cage
Posted Image
Johnson, White, Brown, and Mustafa.

Like Daredevil, up until last week, Luke Cage was assumed to eventually be movie theater bound. Now it's going to be a 13-episode series. Which means that, perhaps, big names are out - even though Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has been extremely vocal for years about wanting to play Cage. I'm not saying it's out of the realm of possibilities since this is still a very high profile project and The Rock likes to branch out (and is even hosting reality shows - albeit ones he's producing), but he'd probably have to take a bit of a pay dip though. Others to consider too: The impressively physical Michael Jai White, Dexter/Hostages Billy Brown, and Isaiah Mustafa - the actor who managed to turn his Old Spice commercials into action role gigs on Chuck and Nikita, and who also has let it be known he'd love to play Cage.

Terry Crews and Rampage Jackson could also be in the running for those looking for the "build" of Luke Cage, but you have to consider that an actor's physique might not be top priority. Muscle can be packed on (as in the cases of Christian Bale and Spartacus' Liam McIntyre), but acting ability is a necessity.

Also, when you're trying to pick someone to play Cage, you really do have to picture them working side by side with those picked to play Iron Fist and Jessica Jones. Not just for the Defender's mini-series, but probably on their own series as well. Cage was a long time running buddy of Fist's and a well-known, um, "special" friend of Jones', before they eventually settled down together, so crossovers are likely.

Iron Fist
Posted Image
Park, Kwanten, Sawa, and Hartley.

Heading over into the realm of Kung-Fu, the casting of Iron Fist/Danny Rand might be a little more complicated. In this case, it's probably way better if the guy who's chosen for the role has actually trained in some sort of martial arts. Yes, crash courses for actors have happened before (Keanu Reeves in The Matrix, for example), but it would probably be best for all involved if the man in the yellow mask had a general idea of what to do, from a fighting standpoint.

Ray Park is on a lot of folks' lips primarily because he can fight, and was once attached to an Iron Fist movie project. Leading man charisma-wise however, he may not fit. So how about we turn it over to Devon Sawa, who will not only be fresh off The CW's Nikita, but actually held his own quite nicely (thanks to muay thai training) against Park on an episode of that series. Others to consider here are True Blood's Ryan Kwanten and Smallville's Justin Hartley. Twilight's Cam Gigandet, having a black belt in Krav Maga, is also someone to consider.

Iron Fist, like most martial arts masters of 70s cinema, has a zen-calm personality, so it's not like the actor is going to be required to "make with the jokes" and what not. But he will need to have enough presence to sustain fans for 13 episodes.

Jessica Jones
Posted Image
Maslany, Annable, Carpenter, and Acker.

Let's talk ladies now, as Jessica Jones really needs someone capable of displaying an extraordinarily wide rage of emotions - especially as it pertains to "all things damaged." Any talk of "range" in 2013 automatically brings up Orphan Black's incredible star Tatiana Maslany, who plays multiple roles on the series. And it just so happens that, from a looks and age standpoint, she'd be perfect for Jones. Going a bit older now, depending on how long the show decides Jones has been out of high school (where she was the classmate of another Marvel character who currently isn't allowed to appear in Marvel Cinematic Universe stories), you can call up Dexter's Jennifer Carpenter or Angel/Person of Interest's Amy Acker. Other's to mull over include House's Odette Annable and Dollhouse's Eliza Dushku.

Jones is the least-known Marvel character of this trio (and of the four getting a series) but those who've read the 28-issue Brian Michael Bendis comic series, Alias, know that she's arguably the most complex and fascinating - almost acting as the Marvel Universe's dirty little secret. The behind-the-scenes character who was never supposed to be discussed, or given her own story.

So who do you all see playing these roles?

I hope Misty Knight can fit in here somewhere.

One of the greatest entertainers of all time, IMHO, is the Nature Boy Ric Flair.

Just give this guy a mic and put him in front of a camera.

This guy was my grandmother's favorite wrestler. My mom, her daughter, hated the Nature Boy.

Well, she did birth the broken egg.

Here is a memorable clip of an younger wrestler, Jay Lethal, going back & forth with the legendary nature Boy himself.

If you close your eyes, can you tell which is which?

Here is an old school clip of the Nature Boy acting a fool.

Here is a new clip for the upcoming Justice League animated video "War" featuring Wonder Woman. I would not be surprised if Gal Gadot wears a similar outfit as WW in the Man of Steel sequel as shown here.

After the Justice League animated feature (which has not been released), a new Batman feature will debut. Batman has two primary love interests, Catwoman & Talia. Both women appeared in the "Dark Knight Rises" film. In the comics, Batman has a son with Talia. His name is...wait for it...Damian. He made his debut in the classic "Batman & Son" storyline a few years ago. He was raised among killers & assassins, then his mom sent him to be with his dad. Yes, a whole lot of fun came from that. Sadly, the character was killed off recently, making Batman as grim as ever. Strangely enough, the villain with the orange & blue mask, Deathstroke, is a long time enemy of the first Robin, Dick Grayson.

James Brown, one of the greatest of all time.

Here are two decidely different homages to James Brown.

First up: A young Eddie Murphy.

How did he keep his hair on?

Next up, an even younger Michael Jackson.

And because I do have a wicked sense of humor, let's watch Eddie & Michael together. I am pretty sure I posted this song before.

I hope this song gets stuck in the heads of each & every one of you.

Remember this? Pay close attention to the first panel referring to the lawyer.

Posted Image

Who is this lawyer?

Well, her cousin is a fugitive scientist with anger issues. When her cousin catches feelings, he gets big & green. Years ago, when she was shot by thugs, her cousin gave her an impromptu blood transfusion. She is also Luke's ex. I proudly present the She-Hulk, who stops the fight before it got too out of hand.

Is it ever a good idea for your ex & your wife to ride off into the sunset to talk?
