The topic of racism comes up quite often in comics. John Stewart is a lightening rod for racist interenet trolls on various comic book messageboards. The thought of a powerful, intelligent, sane, strong, and good-hearted black man still makes some fans uneasy. Many black fans no longer read X-Men due to clear & consistant patterns of crappy treatment of black male characters. On one of the black comic messageboards, I saw a link where a producer of the the X-Menn films made some disgusting racist comments. Naturally, many of the posters felt the producer found the right home producing X-Men films with his attitude. http://newsone.com/2739393/john-palermo-kanye-west/ |

With the breakout success of the Avengers, they have no choice. One of the reasons they will have Batman, played by Ben Affleck (who played the Marvel hero Daredevil back in the day), in the Superman sequel. Rumor has it, they are looking for an actress to play Wonder Woman in a cameo. Plenty fans are irate about a 40-something Affleck playing the Dark Knight when many feel he failed as Daredevil in his younger days. DC is trying to play catch-up. |

What has many comic messageboards on fire is the that fact that with the success of these comic films, both Marvel & DC will have to feature more women & people of color. The X-Men films messed up by casting Halle as Storm. They messed up even further by not given Storm the screen time that the first Black superheroine deserved. Not to mention, Storm is one of the most powerful mutants on the team (normally within the top three of any lineup). Unfortunately, ever scene in both film & comics has to be about Wolverine. One would think that since she is now his sidepiece, that would elevate her status, but alas no such luck. Naturally, I want to the see the Black Panther on screen for Marvel. He is the first black hero period. We will see the Falcon in the next Captain America movie. The Falcon, some guy named Sam Wilson, is the first American born Black hero. The Panther is African. We have already seen James Rhodes/War Machine/Iron Patriot, played by Don Cheadle, in the Iron Man films. Don was a much better choice than Terrance Howard. Many people still don't know that Blade is a Marvel Comics character. Many will argue that it was the Blade films that jump started the comic film Renaissance. Wesley Snipes actually wanted to bring the Black Panther to the screen well before ever playing Blade. The success of Blade is proof enough that a strong black hero can put people in the seats, provided those involved in the film are putting their hearts into it, as Snipes did. On the DC side, it seems like the character of Cyborg is being pushed as the "black guy" in a possible Justice League movie. I am afraid he may come across as too Robocop-ish in the film. Also, he kills the escape factor inherent with most action heroes. He is pretty much a robot from the neck down. No romantic love interest for him. He does not need to use the restroom. Cyborg may draw sympathy from the audience, but I would rather see a black hero draw awe, & capture the imagination of the audience. I will post some pictures of Cyborg later. In the nest DC animated film, the role of Cyborg will be voiced by Shemar Moore. A good portion of black fans would rather see John Stewart as Green Lantern in a Justice League movie. John Stewart can and has captured the imaginations of fans due to his breakout success in the beloved Justice League cartoons from the early 2000s. The Hal Jordan Green Lantern had his shoot, in fact, he had several, and he tanked hard. But the mere mention of John Stewart being featured instead of Hal Jordan will send white fanboys in a rage on just about any messageboard. Some will get downright racist while others will spend days trying to convince you how Hal should always come first. And as always, we need more women in tights on screen. |
