I got tired of the racially driven threads in here so here goes an attempt to discuss something else entirely. I have been to Spain, Portugal and Italy where they recycle close to everything possible outside of creating personal compost heaps. In Kamikatsu, a town on Shikoku Island in eastern Japan, nothing is wasted. Everything is composted or recycled. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/7499954.stm Meanwhile, I've noticed that people have had issues recycling on the most basic level. Why is this? According to the EPA, the benefits of recycling are as follows: * Recycling protects and expands U.S. manufacturing jobs and increases U.S. competitiveness. * Recycling reduces the need for landfilling and incineration. * Recycling prevents pollution caused by the manufacturing of products from virgin materials. * Recycling saves energy. * Recycling decreases emissions of greenhouse gases that contribute to global climate change. * Recycling conserves natural resources such as timber, water, and minerals. * Recycling helps sustain the environment for future generations. So why not recycle? It's really not that hard to do. |
