Being a graduate of an HBCU, my best pet peeve is blacks investing in education. I believe every HBCU should have a larger endowment fund and that money should be used to provide our people with scholarships. |

I dont believe there should be an HBCU. My parents made sure i did not go to one of them. The NAACP, should be fund raising and granting scholarships to students. |

I am not knocking them at all. I'm not saying that they are not accomplishing tasks at the colleges, nor am i saying that the colleges or useless if that is how you interpreted my last statement.; I just believe that it is holding blacks back socially. I wanted to go to a HBCU awhile back, but my parents said "Carlos, The world is not like that. The world is not 87% black, 10% white, and 3 % other. The pint of college is to prepare you for the world mentally and socially. And when you get a great job you will see that the 87% blacks decrease to 3% because we are the 'others' in their eyes. " |

LOS, too many blacks use that excuse, but I will say that almost every black that goes to an HBCU understand that. I do not understand how it could hold you back socially because HBCUs are some of the most diverse universties in the country. In fact HBCs may help you because more diverse because you have teachers for all over the world which may not be the case at some of the other schools. I can only speak for the state of GA and it see this everyday. On my job, they refused to hire a guy because he was from China. They claim that they could not understand him, but they all admitted that he was the smartest person in the pool. I have had people from other states and countries ask him why I am not like of the people in my city. They mention the fact that I can get along with everyone regardless of where they from. I proudly say that at FVSU, we were all like family regardless of where we came from. Since we teachers were diverse, I felt like I was raised by the world, and can socialize with anyone in the world. But to each his own. Finally, to some schools like FVSU help believe in themselves because all their life they only seen white people in certain positions. But the come to us and are like wow! I did not know we have black people like this. Edited by Last Black man, Nov 11 2009, 06:09 PM.

Blacks that go to Ivy League school like Harvard and Yale, seem to be more accepted by society. If you look at Obama and the blacks around him, most of the blacks in his cabinet went to Harvard or some Ivy League school. He didn't really pick any blacks that went to black colleges. |

You can not tell me that no other black person is accepted by society more than Oprah who helped Obama win the White House. Did you know these facts about HBCUs: HBCU graduates are experts in their chosen field. Over half of all African American professionals are graduates of HBCUs. Nine of the top ten colleges that graduate the most African Americans who go on to earn Ph.D.s are HBCU graduates. More than 50% of the nation’s African American public school teachers and 70% of African American dentists earned degrees at HBCUs. UNCF members Spelman College and Bennett College produce over half of the nation’s African American female doctorates in all science fields. HBCU Xavier University is #1 nationally in placing African-Americans into medical school. http://thinkhbcu.org/hbcu_facts.htm |

Obama and his wife both went to Harvard, and I think that helped them deal with people of different races. |

If Barack and Michelle Obama had gone to Black colleges like Spellman and Morehouse, would they still have been accepted by White America? |
