OOC: bonus points if you can recite the next line in the stanza :)

The woods of the Far Lands were notorious for their shady inhabitants. Dark Elves, demons and witches all roamed around just waiting to stalk you and suck your blood and moonless night. Or so the storybooks like to say.
But the Far Land Woods were never as bad as anyone liked to preach...they were much worse. The whole forest was like a death trap to foreigners: twisting wealds, thick canopies where no sun could reach and the eerie feel of one's grave. Here is where Farrow Beezl had lived his whole life, trying to survive against the Woods' challenges. The giant beasts were always fighting over what few edible and killable things were sustained for the predators. Of course, the Dark Elves naturally had adapted to this horrid place, and Farrow lived a decent life compared to most of his fellow kin. The skilled Ranger had the aid of birds with him, and there were many birds of prey that were plenty helpful in gathering food for him for a bit of protection. One good bolt of Dark Wood made the even the dumbest of beasts turn tail to find easier prey then one that fought back.

Now Farrow was doing just that, his arm raised with the bowstring taut in the opposite hand. A black arrow was notched into the string and trained on a growling bear on the other side of the clearing with a hawk in its maw. The Elf let the arrow fly and it struck the bear with a solid thump. The stricken beasts reared up, abandoning its still wriggling prey and thunder off with a very sore and bloody shoulder.

Farrow shouldered the bow with a confidant smile and strode over to the injured bird. He scooped it up in his arms, cradling its broken wing carefully and starting to head back to his quaint tree home.

Anna sat in her little solitary hut, a protective circle of candles around her. There were four in all. Red for fire, blue for water, green for earth, and yellow for air. She sat with her legs crossed and arms resting on her knees. She concentrated on the elements, giving a tug here and there. Daily practice like this helped her to stay in tune with her elemental magic. "Air to the west. Fire to the south. Water to the east. Earth to the north." She whispered.

Mirage lay curled on the back of his Chosen's chair. He fanned his wings and watched her perform her usual meditation. His little jaws stretched in a massive yawn and he placed his head on his feet. A soft croon came from him as he got comfortable. Maybe later they would go outside. Mirage loved flying around outside, but he was too small to fly around without Anna with him.

The Dark Elf kept along the faint forest trail that led to the tallest oak tree in the forest. A network of rises surrounded the massive tree along with stony passes that wound up in to the mountains behind the Woods.

His thickly padded smooth leather boots and light step muffled his footfalls. Even if the trail was worn back to hard black clay, Farrow could remain silent. He did just that, knowing full well that he was going to have to be extremely careful with a wounded and bleeding bird in his arms. The scent would attract every hungry predator for a mile length.

"Alright, alright." Anna sighed at her familiar. "We'll go outside for a little fresh air now." She had cleaned up her candles and put on a heavy fur cloak she'd bought the last time she went to the market. It got cold in the woods here. Once she had attached her little bag that held the basic stuff she used for spells, she turned to Mirage. "Let's go!"

He chirped loudly and launched into the air, circling around his Chosen. Then he landed on her shoulder, crawling into the hood of her warm-thing. He sat back there, waiting for them to go outside. He wondered what new and exciting things he could find out there this time!

"Now remember, little one." Anna said as the walked outside. "Don't fly too far from me. I don't want to loose you." And there were birds out here bigger than her little fire lizard. "And if you see someone you don't know, come back immediately!"

It didn't take too long to find the little tree home Farrow bunked in. It was pretty well hidden, but if one truly looked it was simple enough to find. Still though, Farrow felt as though he'd been running in circles trying to find the place. His keen ears were starting to pick up the sounds of stalking beasts. It was just as he feared; the predators had gotten wind of the bird.

The Dark Elf was quick to scramble up the tree into the tiny home. The walls its self were still living and growing branches, wetted then woven together to make a snug home that could be hidden in the foliage of the leaves.

Climbing into the makeshift opening Farrow set the bird down on his own bed. He tucked the bird into the many layers of soft, plush furs he'd recovered from his kills. Then he began searching for the small medical supply kit he'd made for treating his own wounds.

Mirage chirped happily as he flew around in circles. He landed on a tree branch and crouched down, waiting for his Chosen. He was a mischievous little fire lizard and this was a favorite game of his. But it could be dangerous too, since he was definitely not the biggest predator out here.

"Mirage!" Anna called out. Oh...that little menace! He just loved playing hide-n-seek out here. But it was dangerous. "Damnit, Mirage! Come out!" She kept her senses alert for anything that might possibly be a threat. I guess I should have guessed he'd play this game. She thought. So she really couldn't be mad. The poor familiar was stuck in the cabin with her so much. There used to be a time when you didn't have to worry about what might be lurking in the shadows. But that was a long while ago. "Mirage!" She spotted something white in the trees and glared.

After what seemed like ages, Farrow produced the small package from under a large quiver he kept ready for back up use. He unwrapped its skin packaging and pulled out a neat ream of woven cloth bandages. Then he took a small cloth handing on a peg on the far wall, wet it from his canteen and kneeled beside the wounded bird. He dabbed away the dirt and grim from his patient’s wounds with the cloth then began wrapping the blood gashes over its wing and side. For know, that was the best he could do.

Work finished he sat down a small blanket he'd lay out and unshouldered his bow. He pulled a small fine cloth from his pocket and began polishing the bow's fine, but well-worn grip.

Outside he could still here the beasts prowling about, but he heard another noise too, something like a human voice, but it was too far and overpowered by nature's beasts and sounds.

"Get your little dragon butt down here!" Anna hollered up at her familiar. He was too high up for her to get to easily. "Come on, Mirage." She was getting nervous being out here. The air felt heavier and she felt like they were being watched. Dangerous predators lurked about at these times. And Mirage was bound to draw their attention. "Little one, we need to go home." She called up, glancing around.

The familiar peeped at his Chosen and swished his tail. He was having fun playing! But his Anna was starting to sound worried. Mirage sniffed at the air, not picking up anything dangerous in the near vicinity. His Chosen called him again, less angered and much more worried. He huffed a sigh, knowing that his playtime was over now. Stretching, he spread his wings and glided down into her arms.

Anna watched as her familiar flew down. She held out her arms and caught him, holding him to her. He nuzzled her cheek and climbed into the hood of her cloak, which was currently pulled up over her head. The fire lizard curled around her neck, tail wrapping around like a choker. Anna reached up and pulled her hood down a little more firmly, hiding the fire lizard. "Now, let's just hope we make it back home without incident." The witch muttered, starting back. That feeling of being watched had grown, and she didn't feel safe any longer. She pulled her small bag of keystones around, in case she had to use her magic.

A long, low howl rippled out from the depths of the woods. It made Farrow shiver and the ranger pulled his bow closer. "What ever made that.... it’s big." He muttered, leaning his weight back to glance out an opening designed as a window.

"Next time we come out here," Anna grumbled, "I'm putting you on a leash!" Her familiar squeaked in protest. "Don't talk back! It's dangerous out here. What would I do if something happened to you?" A shiver racked her body and she pulled her hood down even more. "Stay there, little one. You're safer hiding in there." Something was stalking them, she could feel it. Almost home now, but what will I do once there if it follows me back? It was times like these that she wished she didn't live out here by herself.

~The little fire lizard kept his tail around his Chosen's neck, not squeezing hard. It helped him keep his perch along her shoulders and neck. He made small noises at her, trying to comfort her. Mirage rested his cheek against hers, rubbing a little. It also gave him a better view of their surroundings. Something caught his attention and he hissed.~

A long, low howl filled the air. Anna froze, her heart beating in her chest. Mirage stopped making his crooning noises at her, hissed, and hunkered down farther in her hood. "Not good." She whispered, pulling out a keystone from her pouch. That howl sounded like it belonged to something big. Which if that was the case, she was screwed. The keystone only had enough power to knock something the size of a tiger on its behind. Not something the size of a bear. Or bigger. "Stay quiet, little one." Anna barely whispered.

He caught the flicker of movement from below and was instantly to his feet. His knuckles were white from his deadly grip on the bow. Glancing back he grabbed a full quiver and hung it over his shoulders and chest. Stuffing the polishing cloth in his pocket he strode over to the bed. The bird by now was watching quietly, unable to sleep with the scents and sounds in the air. At least it's calmed down a bit, Farrow thought, noting how its movements were much more relaxed.

He tucked the furs a bit closer, checked the bandages, and then leapt out the opening of his dwelling. He landed neatly on a branch below, checked the string on the bow then crept lower down into the foliage as another howl, much closer now, rumbled the forest.

~Mirage hissed again, more quietly, into his Chosen's ear. Something was coming. He could sense it. His little heart pounded with fear for not himself, but his Anna. He wasn't big enough to do anything should something attack her.~

"Hush Mirage." She whispered, moving more swiftly through the woods. Not much further until she reached her home. But this still posed another problem: What did she do if the creature followed her? You can cast a more intricate spell at home. Her mind offered. But that takes time. Time I wont have! The more logical side argued. The howl came again and this time, she knew it was hopeless. She stopped moving, clutching the keystone in a death grip. Anna wanted to call to her magic now, activating the keystone. But she knew better. Until she saw the creature, saw what kind of magic would aid her now, she wouldn't release the stored magic in the keystone.

Suddenly an arrow shaft raced past Anna's cheek, striking the ground with a solid thud. Farrow was keeping to the shadow's with another arrow nocthed and ready. "Who are you?" He boomed from cover of the foliage.

Anna stumbled back a step when the arrow shot by her cheek. A startled hiss came from inside her hood. She raised a hand up to pull it down farther, hoping that whatever or whomever had shot the arrow hadn't noticed Mirage. A voice rang out towards her and she had to take a minute to find her voice again. "Anna." It was almost a squeak. But damn! There was something howling eerily and getting closer. Her unknown speaker was lucky she hadn't shrieked. The hand holding the keystone was white with the amount of force she was clutching it with. Was this a friend or a foe? And did she currently care enough to wait and find out? There was, after all, something big coming.
