Some background, first: My little brother, Lee, was born with acute epilepsy. He's now 5 years old and has had over 500 seizures since he was born, which has caused his speech skills to be as developed as that of a 1 1/2 year old. He's just now learning to walk. The kiddo's afflictions break my heart, I love the little guy. Before I joined this site, I started attending poetry readings at Barnes & Noble, and I've read a few of my poems there. This one made my dad cry. The Godsent Child By Walker Burgess While philosophers of days gone by Tell of life stories in the most poetic sense I look across from this tiny nook in Barnes & Noble Straight ahead to Lee, my little brother "Give me some water, Mommy" Is what he's saying, but none can understand It's not hard to figure out though That angels speak differently Most hear squeaks and squeals like that of a dying mouse But those who know him, who love him Who cherish every moment of his existence They know that he speaks with a voice and a language made just for him My brother is a Godsent Child He sees through his eyes the truth of the universe The beauty of life, that which we cannot imagine He sees no anger, hatred, violence, sadness, fear, or despair If he chose to speak as we do, he would ask us "Why do we hate and fear that which we don't understand? Why don't we love one another, regardless of deformities or race? I have no anger or sadness. I love everyone equally, because everyone is worth loving." And we would stand there, staring in awe at his magnificence We would know then, a universal truth Children are far wiser than we think, for they can see beauty Where we cannot They can love people who have been cast away "Don't fear me, just because I speak differently", Lee would say, "Don't hate me, or my family." And all of us would be bewildered, wondering what he meant For the world - all of us, all the matter in existence We are all his family It's simple enough to ask for water Why is it so hard to ask for love? |

I don't know what to say... This is so good it has left me speechless... The emotion in it is really powerful! Well done, and well written.

Thanks, Rael. And people think I'm insane because I don't edit my writing. |

They think you're "insane"? That's funny... Apart from the odd few, I never edit mine either... I find the first draft is usually the most honest one... |
