I'm not gonna go into the stereotypes a lot of people I know have about australians... maily because they are unjustly insulting and rude... and it wouldn't be fair on SK. And I agree, it is a real shame that we need to rely on stereotypes still when these parts of the world are so much more accessible, via a plane or the net for example. |

Well, at least we don't bang sheep :P. (I'm sorry I had to say it) My Dad's a New Zealander anyway so I can't say anything. But I do ride a kangaroo to school XD. Just kidding. Got ran off the road by one while I was on my bike though (not kidding) About psychiatrists and councellors...despite being 15 I've had my fair share of councellors. Seems people think keeping to yourself is a problem. All school councellors do is tell students to be friends with you which make you look like an idiot. I got very tired of that. My Dad wanted to send me to a psychiatrist a little while ago because I was very depressed at that point but I didn't end up going. Oh well :/. Oh, and the stereotypical Aussie in my opinion has blonde hair, blue eyes, a tan, says "crikey" and "mate" a lot, drinks a lot of beer and cooks snags (sausages) on the barby, has a pet kangaroo as well as eating kangaroo, say bloody hell a lot too, plays Aussie rules football. And cricket. And rugby. And talks a lot. And buts into peoples business. And the girls have huge racks and all they wear are bikinis. Fortunately, I'm not a stereotypical Aussie. I can't remember the last time I said "mate". |

the funny thing about that is; the last time I said "mate" was last night... about 10 times at least... And I say "dude" a lot over msn (to guys) as well lol. And I must say, that's more than some "school councellors" that I have know do... I remember a mate of mine used to have to go and see our school's councellor (who most students didn't know existed) and all she would do is scold him lol. And I just realised... Me saying "mate" then was not deliberate, but entirely coincidental lol. |

Ya eh. It always seems that school counselors just scold you, eh. My old high school counselors are just old teachers who wanted more power to direct our lives. Unfortunately, they were all English teachers and have no idea about anything outside of that, so anyone who wanted to go into the sciences had no help at all, eh. Cheers, eh. |

That was pretty much exactly the same as it was for me... Teachers wanting to have a higher place in the school... Why couldn't they do it simply out of want to help people?? |

I'm not sure, were your counselors bitter? Mine were and that's why I think they never cared, they were just too bitter and jaded. |

yeah she was, for the most part. If she was in a good mood though, she would just be too lazy to really do anything... |

Ha ha ha that's sounds exactly like one of my guidance counselors. They must have been made from the same mold. |

Psychiatrists and psychologists are completely different jobs. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who treats mental illness, which has been shown scientifically to be a medical and neurological condition. Mental illness is a misfiring of the neurons in the brain causing disturbances of self, perception, and impaired reality testing (not sure what is real and what is perceived). A psychiatrist is a doctor who prescribes medication because mental illness is a physical illness, it has nothing to do with one's childhood, personality or intelligence. Mental illness is more similar to diabetes: with the right tweaking of one's biology, a life long condition can be controlled and normalized. A psychologist is not a medical doctor, but specializes in talk therapy, mood disorders, and behavioral change. Some types of cognitive behavioral therapies have been shown to be as effective in treating depression as medication. However talk therapy and cognitive behavioral methods are not necessary nor useful for medical mental illnesses such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder which are purely medical and just need medication. Talk therapy can be helpful for people who've been thru trauma or abuse, or who have personality issues that cannot be fully treated with medications such as obsessive-compulsive tendencies. For far too long, people blamed themselves or their parents for mental illnesses that are purely medical conditions. For too long people were thought of a less intelligent when mental illness does not affect one's intelligence. Also for too long people with mental illness were thought of as having some kind of moral deficit, which is baloney, the illness is medical. As for talk therapy, well I have a psychologist degree and am a full-on whiner and like therapy. I have my own practice and work on staff alongside psychiatrists who prescribe the medication people might need. We also have a couple of social workers on staff and one secretary. Using medication or talk therapy really depends upon what is being treated, and finding out what works for the person to feel better and achieve their goals. |
