Well, this should sound funny at least... ^_^

Even though I am 20 years old, my mum keeps trying to intefere with the way I live my life... She has decided that I an need of a Psychiatrist and has already payed for 10 sessions with one in a place called Yambol... (about 4 hours drive down the main motorway/freeway)

The thing is... She seems to have forgetton that last time I went to one, it didn't help me what so ever... So what's the point... Especially when the guy speaks almost no English and I can't speak enough Bulgarian to have a meaningful conversation yet...

Anyways, this had led me to realize that most of the people I know who have seen a Psychiatrist found them utterly useless, but most of the people who have then seen a Councellor (myself included) found them to be very helpful...

As a psychology student I find this very interesting because the academic requirements for both jobs are... well... nothing... You don't HAVE to have any qualifications to do either... (and I just realised... I'm a phsycology student who apparently needs a psychiatrist... that seems quite funny to me)

What do you think guys think of psychiatrists and councellors?
Have you ever visited one?
Do you know people who have visited them?
Do you see the point in them?
Do you feel there should be a set minimum qualification for them to have?

What are your opinions of them in general?

(also, sorry for the length of this post...) ^_^

All they say is: "How does that make you feel?" after everything you say.

But in all seriousness....

I've never in my life encountered a physciartrist (hereby "psyche"). I guess being only 15, i don't need one. There's no qualifications for that job? So basically, anyone can just get a job as a psyche and talk a load of crap at the patient. I can't think of any qualifications that should be set for psyches ( I just woke up:P) but sometime they can be helpful, to some extent....

I will always remember the following, rather poor 'joke' that did make me laugh at first:

To be a psyche you need to be able to say the three following phrase;
"How does that make you feel?"
"Tell me about your father."
"Please get you reciept from the desk on the way out."

Funnily enough, I was asked by the first psyche to talk about my father... I think that was about the time I stopped going...

EDIT: Section of this post have been removed because, looking back, they were not really of any use posting and were a tad personal ^_^

Er... yeah... sorry... It's supposed to mean that a Psychiatrist only needs to be able to say those three things to be "qualified"... As I said, it's a poor joke... But I did laugh the first time I heard it... lol.

Oh man, I have never needed to see a Psychiatrist in my entire life, probably because I am a Canadian and we are all pretty laid back over here. You know, go to Tim Horton's and have a coffee and donut, play hockey, and then sit back late at night and have a beer without a care in the world (is that an accurate stereotype). But anyways, I have however seen counselors, well Guidance counselors, back at my high school when I needed to pick my courses for the next year of school.

Is it true that shrinks don't need qualifications where you guys come from. In Canada, this comes straight from the CPA (Canadian Psychiatric Association), "Psychiatrists are provincially licensed medical doctors who have completed a minimum of five years of additional accredited training following four years of general medicine training. After successfully completing the training requirements and examinations, they are certified as specialists by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC)."

Personally I always thought psychiatrists were useless since I prefer to just ask myself those questions and do some deep thinking about my own life.

Besides, your parents and friends can always ask you those questions, and you would get the same results except it would be cheaper.

Cheers, eh.

I agree, I prefer to ask myself and think things through... And yeah, they don't need them... There are qualifications they can get which allows them to charge more money, but it's not necessary to take appointments etc...

Incidentally, I don't actually know any stereotypes about Canadians... only english stereotypes about Americans and (sorry SK) Australians, and American stereotypes of the English lol

On the topic of stereotypes I guess you now know one of the Americans more prominent view of Canadians. However, I did forget to mention igloos.

Oh ya, bad teeth and the such, that's unfortunate, he is by no stretch of the imagination a regular British citizen. Anyways, most Austrailian stereotypes are based on the Crocodile Hunter, crikey mate! Sorry SK had to do it.

Oh to think the world has grown so small and yet we still know so little about each other.
