In my first playthrough, Diablos was my powerhouse GF and I relied upon him quite frequently to kill my foes. However, I do understand your confusion with him using gravity attacks, but I got around that problem by just saying SquareSoft at the time didn't think Diablos's attack all the way through and forgot he was gravity based.
