In a land, far far away, lies the kingdom of Fiore...a small, peaceful nation of 18.2 million, and a place filled with Magic! Found in every home, bought and sold in every marketplace, for most magic is merely a tool, a mundane part of every day life. For some, however, Magic is an art, and they've devoted their lives to its practice. These are the Wizards--banded together in magical Guilds, they ply their skills in search of fame and fortune! Many such guilds dot the landscape of Fiore, but there is a certain Guild in a certain town that soars high above the rest...one from which countless legends will soon be born...

Its name...is Gryphon Wing!

The flowers that gave Orchid Town its name were in full bloom this morning among the many flower boxes, creeping vines, and clingy trees that spotted almost every available surface in town. At some point in history, barely remembered by this day, some Mage had probably done some sort of silly experiment, or perhaps ambient Magic had seeped into the plants around here and made them insanely voracious but undeniably beautiful...whatever the reason, their growth could never really be curbed, but they never seemed to really intrude in such a way as to need more than the occasional trim. Cleaning up when fall came would, of course, require an entire platoon of street sweepers, but that little tidbit could easily be overlooked in the presence of this magnificent scenery. However, the residents of Orchid Town were quite used to this sight, most having grown up with it, so few paid the sweet smelling flowers and gently waving boughs any mind as they bustled about their daily business, taking the town's many steps two at a time or easily hopping between ledges, sliding down rails, or even using the plants themselves for makeshift bridges or rappels. Yes, it was a beautiful day, but it was a day like any other, and that meant there were jobs, chores, and all other sorts of needs to be met and things to be done. Such was the case even for those most colorful and illustrious individuals in town, those who made their living by the practice of Magic...the Wizards.

At the tippy-top of one of the higher hills in town, and down a winding alley, one would find the Guild Street. Here, though each Guild Hall was of a quite respectable size, they had for some reason (probably something to do with taxes, or the lack of space given that the town was built in a hilly, semi-mountainous area) been quite crammed together and the road had become quite narrow. Still, from every rooftop hung some sort of flag or symbol, and among these the local Mage Guild's sign was easily visible. The feathered, sharp-beaked insignia of Gryphon Wing fluttered in the breeze much like the feathers of its namesake, announcing its presence proudly to all who might so much as glance its way. And already smoke came from its chimney, and one could catch the scent of homely cooking from the wafting cloud. Its door and windows shone from within, though soon their glow would be lost as the sun made its way higher into the sky to cleanse the last vestiges of early blue twilight. Still, the sight within would only become clearer--that of many young men and women around tables, hoisting tankards high or chatting in excitement as they prepared to take on the day.

Guild Hall

Atticus sipped a relaxing cup of tea as he sat down with a book for his usual morning routine. The heat of the drink and its strong flavor woke him up, the book gave his brain a nice "warm up," and as soon as the Job Board wasn't quite so crowded, he would see about finding himself some work. He hoped today he would be able to find something that wasn't quite so...vigorous...as the usual sorts of tasks Mages were asked to do. Sure, he could fight off monsters or criminals as well as just about anyone else in the Guild--perhaps a bit better, even, given the nature of his Magic--but he personally preferred the easier quests. Finding herbs for medicine, retrieving lost items, exploring (uninhabited) ruins to bring back new information and discoveries. He liked body guarding too, as most times people didn't actually get attacked on the roads--Fiore was wacky sometimes, but it was far from lawless--and it gave Atticus the opportunity to travel to new places and meet new people.

He smiled sadly into his drink, watching the ripples distort his reflection. If someone had told him seven years ago that he would be a coward, sitting back taking the easy money while the rest of his friends went out and did heroic things and stopped bad guys, he would have probably punched them even though he had been such a scrawny nerd. He was still a little bit on the gangly side, but at least now he was taller and it was a more athletic kind of skinny. But no, fighting was too dangerous now. Not for him. Just everyone else.

He looked around to see who was here this morning. He hadn't seen the Guild Master yet, but Zebulon's office door on the second floor was slightly ajar, and there was a thin trail of pipe smoke coming from it, so the elder was probably doing paperwork or something. Lusine was at the counter today, wearing that bright smile of hers as usual, but all of the other S-Ranks were gone right now. Rutger hadn't been seen in a week, but that wasn't unusual for him--even though it was clear the first-born son loved the Guild like his own family, he had a great deal of his father in him. Zebulon had once been known as a Solo Mage, and Rutger probably could have made that kind of living himself if he so chose. Gottfried had left yesterday, all the way to Mount Hakobe near Magnolia on one of his monster slaying quests. He would be back sooner than Rutger, but that was at least a three day round trip. Lily had also left the day before, but Atticus had only seen her setting out that night. Still, she was the type that tried to get things done as efficiently as possible, so she would probably be back sooner than the others. Lusine caught his eye as he started looking for some of the others around his own age, like Lot, and the Guild Master's daughter gave him a smile and a wave as she did to everyone else. Atticus blushed a little into his tea and shyly returned the gesture.

But now his cup was empty, so he sat it down on the saucer, dog-eared the page of his book before returning it to his satchel, and slid back his seat. Time to see what the day had in store, he supposed...

Guild Hall

Working for a Guild was considerably better for her than anything else she'd dabbled in before. While she was working at the library, Ivory didn't pay much attention to the Guilds. She knew what they did and why they existed, but it never really struck her as something that she'd be good at. A library was a peaceful place with a great deal of down time and that down time gave her the opportunity to read and learn. The woman took to magic almost right away and with all of the free time that she had, she was able to develop a great deal of knowledge relating to spells and how to use them. Realizing that there was much more profit to be made using her spells for a Guild, Ivory left her son in the care of a woman she trusted and left for Orchid Town with the goal to save up as much as she could in order to make a life for she and her son.

Ivory hadn't been at the Guild for very long, maybe a bit less than a year. She knew some of the people but not all of them. After a while, they all started to look the same anyway, especially when there was so many people in the same place at the same time. Ivory dreaded mornings because it was always the same thing; pile up in front of the Mission Board to find something to do for the day. She typically decided to wait until everyone decided what they wanted to do and left the room and this morning would be no different. With a simple cup of water in hand, Ivory walked through the Hall and went outside, taking a seat on a bench across from the Guild to take in some of the morning air. She loved this place, particularly the scenery and when she was done with all of this Guild work, there was a pretty significant chance that she'd settle down here with her son to live out the rest of her days.

Lot
Guild Hall

HP: 11/11

It was common in Lot's early years at Gryphon Wing for the boy to wander into the guild hall well after the day had began and all of the other mages had already started or completed jobs. He was without a single care or responsibility in the world, but over the past year the young man began to blossom, it would seem. 'The early bird gets the worm.' the guildmaster had joked when Lot first changed his morning routine nearly a year ago. Now, the teen was always early for some reason.

As the mage traveled the cobble street, he tended to his bedhead, pulling the knots free and setting his hair the way he preferred. Peering around the corner ahead, Lot smiled as he saw Miss Ivory sitting at her usual spot. Straightening his back, the young mage casually walked towards the guild's entrance, adding a "Good morning," in a feigned deep voice as he passed the librarian. Once his back was to the woman, he smiled like he had just done something impressive and walked into the guild hall.

Lusine waved as Lot entered with her usual bright smile, and the teen couldn't help but smile back. It was still early, so the guild was mostly empty inside. it wasn't difficult to spot Atticus reading. "Hey," Lot yawned as he grabbed a seat across from the crash mage. He was careful to choose a seat that let him steal peaks at Ivory through the door. "What're you reading this time?" After a few minutes, Lusine brought out a hot drink. "Thank you, Miss Lusine. You're always on the ball!" He said as he sipped from the cup.

Guild Hall

Just as Atticus was standing up, Lot slid into a seat on the other side of the table with a grin. The other mage smiled to see his friend, and pulled his book back out of the satchel to show the plant mage its cover--it looked almost childish, as its title was made up of stylized letters with a flame-like quality and split into seven different colors.

"The Basics of Rainbow Fire, by Professor Totomaru. He used to be one of the Element 4 of the Phantom Lord guild in Magnolia, before it got disbanded." he replied, as Lusine brought Lot something to drink. She glanced at Atticus, who nodded and thanked her as she took his empty teacup back for him. "In that magic style the different colors of flame have different properties, so my thinking is that it could help me fine-tune my own magic." He had heard once that Gildartz Clive, one of the only other users of Crash magic Atticus had ever heard of, could actually make the destructive power he wielded "non-lethal" specifically to human beings, even if he still caused walls or the ground around him to shatter just by being in proximity. The closest he had gotten so far was simply to concentrate his own Crash into a small area, creating a breakdown effect more similar to a cutting edge instead of the more "smashing" effects.

He left the book on the table in case Lot wanted to take a closer look, and walked over to the job board. After looking over things for a minute, he saw one that caught his eye, and carefully removed it from under the pin before taking it back to his friend.

"Say, is Ms. Ivory still sitting out on the bench? This quest here seems like it'd be relatively simple, but her advice would probably be helpful, since she has a kid and all." He handed the paper over to the plant mage--he wasn't concerned Lot would try to steal the job from him, as more than likely he would end up asking the other boy to come along. "The only thing I can't figure out is why it's got 3 stars for difficulty. Even the one about taking out a whole bandit gang was only 2."

We Need a Babysitter!

The wife and I are attending a feast with dear friends, but we shall be gone overnight and we're just ever so worried about our precious little one. She can't quite be trusted to stay home alone by herself, but we can't exactly let just any old riff-raff into our manor. Please, send someone to babysit her!

A few words of caution:

  • Don't show up until the sun goes down
  • She is still teething, but please don't let her put her mouth on anything she shouldn't, especially yourselves
  • Be wary, some of the games she likes to play aren't suitable for a young lady of her age

Kairos
Guild Hall

HP: 13

Having risen with the sun - as he always did - Kairos was jogging through Orchid Town, or more specifically, up Orchid Town, in the direction of the Guild Hall. His residence was located on the bottom of the hilly region that Orchid Town had been established upon, so it was always quite a hike to reach HQ. Even with his special...conditioning...it was more than a little difficult for him to reach the top without having to stop to catch his breath. Kairos had always liked a challenge though, so everyday he would try, try again, and...well...

Staggering to the top and nearly falling flat on his face from exhaustion, Kairos gasped and wheezed for breath, wishing more and more that he was the Dragon Slayer of Flying instead of the Dragon Slayer of Water. Not that being so attuned with the element didn't come without it's perks though, as he quickly demonstrated by taking a long swig of water from his water bottle. Almost in an instant, he felt completely revitalized by the liquid; his energy restored, and he pumped his arms with a grin.

"Woo! I'm unstoppable!"

That was when he noticed that he wasn't alone in front of the Guild Hall, and he lowered his arms with a somewhat sheepish grin on his face. "Oh, hey there, Ivory. I didn't see you there." he said, rubbing the back of his head. "How are you this morning? Any recent news from your son?"

Kaze had been off to the side looking over the various jobs available. He only glanced up as each younger member popped up to get a drink, or breakfast, before returning to look at the jobs. Some popped out that were pretty interesting and he had those copies set off to the side for further information. The dull ones were in their own little stack that could be used to ease the newest members in to the swing of things. The anomalies, the really odd jobs, were in a separate stack as well. There was only one in it though.

Atticus finally roused himself from his tea while Lot plopped down and talked about the book the boy was reading. I can't really call him a boy. He's an adult. He thought while the Crash Magic user talked to Lot about the odd job. "It has several possible meanings. One, they care that much about the kid. Two, there's a potentially high danger from outside sources. Three, something isn't quite right about the whole situation and could potentially be a trap." He said while looking over a second copy of the job Atticus was perusing.

Shifting a bit to get more comfortable with his leaning position he reread the job. He honestly didn't like the feel of the job, too cryptic. Isn't suitable for kids her age? The fuck did that mean? "If you plan on taking the job I'll come along as well if you want." He said while placing the flier back in its 'stack'. He always asked for copies of jobs within his capability range.

Lot sipped tea and nodded as his friend closed the book and explained. Tapping a finger over the author's name, Lot recalled the guild Atticus spoke of and the battle between Wizard Saints."Yea, I remember that." After Atticus got up, Lot pulled the book closer and flipped through a few pages. That guy sure was diligent. "What's this?" Lot instinctively asked as Atticus put the guild flyer in front of him. Skimming through the paper, he figured out what his friend had in mind.

"Say, is Ms. Ivory still sitting out on the bench? This quest here seems like it'd be relatively simple, but her advice would probably be helpful, since she has a kid and all. The only thing I can't figure out is why it's got 3 stars for difficulty. Even the one about taking out a whole bandit gang was only 2."

"Truly, parenthood is the most challenging job of all." Lot laughed off the job's difficulty before downing the last of his tea in one swig. Wiping his mouth on a sleeve, Lot nodded and gestured to where the mother sat alone. "This is perfect! Just you, me and her all night!" he laughed again and slapped his friend on the back. Then, like a premonition, Lot's smile collapsed.

"If you plan on taking the job I'll come along as well if you want." Kaze hollered.

Horrified, Lot turned to Atticus and whispered. "Say no. Say no. Say no." His teenage dream was falling apart! Stealing another peak out the door, Lot found the Water Dragon swooping in already. "C'mon, lets go see if she'll help us."

Ivory wasn't sitting alone for long before she was joined by Kairos, who came running up the stairs and stopped just outside the Guild Hall to take a break. He asked her how she was and then wondered if she'd heard anything regarding her son.

"Oh, I'm well, love," she responded in her usual southern tone and demeanor. "I get the occasional letter from Bryce, but he's quite busy with his schoolin'," she added with a smile. "It's better for the both of us if we focus on what we're doin'. I'll see him again before long."

It wasn't long after Kairos arrived that a couple other members of the Guild came outside. Ivory spotted the mission slip in Lot's hand and assumed that both he and Atticus were going to do the mission together. Perhaps they wanted her help as well? She didn't carry the most diverse array of skills so maybe it was something that she might have a knack for and the pair were able to recognize that.

"It has several possible meanings." broke in Kaze, with a brusque manner that matched his gruff appearance. Atticus turned to the older mage as he put his book, and the mission flyer, into his satchel. "One, they care that much about the kid. Two, there's a potentially high danger from outside sources. Three, something isn't quite right about the whole situation and could potentially be a trap." Atticus turned to Lot with a slight roll of his eyes and twist of his mouth. He had worked with Kaze on missions before, and the man was a reliable fighter if a bit more laid back and brutish, but he just didn't seem to have much in the way of tact and always talked like he knew so much. Still, Atticus had to admit he had a point--at least for the first two statements.

"I doubt it's a trap--Gryphon Wing has probably put away a few folks who'd like to get back at us, but this seems, if anything, too off-the-wall to not be one of the actual weird jobs we get all the time." he said, turning back to the battlemage and taking on a more neutral expression--which then gave way to a thoughtful one as he furrowed his brow. "Then again...did it say something about teething? The rest of it kind of implies the girl's at least past toddlerhood..."

"Truly, parenthood is the most challenging job of all." Lot laughed off the job's difficulty before downing the last of his tea in one swig. Wiping his mouth on a sleeve, Lot nodded and gestured to where the mother sat alone. "This is perfect! Just you, me and her all night!" he laughed again and slapped his friend on the back, which put an end to Atticus's musings before they even got anywhere. Then, like a premonition, Lot's smile collapsed.

"If you plan on taking the job I'll come along as well if you want." Kaze hollered. Horrified, Lot turned to Atticus and whispered.

"Say no. Say no. Say no." Atticus sighed and rubbed his head with one gloved hand.

"A mission's difficulty is usually based on the number of people you'd need at a bare minimum to do it right. This one had three stars, remember?" And with me around, it's better to be safe than sorry. Lot and I aren't parents--Kaze isn't either so far as I know, but at least he's older. If we could get Ivory to come with us that'd be much better... But thinking about the librarian, and Lot's raunchy comments, made the Crash mage flush red for a moment. He covered his face with one hand and faked a cough while he tried to compose himself. But while he did that, Lot snatched the flyer out of his bag, and off the boy went--probably to try and get a head start if he couldn't cut Kaze out of the mission. Atticus sighed and strode after him--he wasn't quite as tall as the plant mage, but had a quick step to his stride that helped him keep up just as easily.

Ms. Ivory, as it turned out, was speaking to Kairos. Atticus had often wondered about the Water Dragon Slayer--where had he come from, and where had he learned his magic? There weren't any living Dragons left, so far as he knew. Lacrima was a pretty safe bet, but that was supposed to be a pretty dangerous process, and Kairos had been here a lot longer than he had. How young had he been when he had that procedure, and why? But, like Kaze, Atticus had been on missions with him before, and knew the man was confident in his skills with good reason.

"Ms. Ivory!" he opened up, before Lot could beat him to the punch. "Excuse me, but I was thinking of taking this mission--it's...an odd family, from the sound of it, but they're basically looking for a sitter. Shouldn't be anything too...stressful." Less chance for me to break something. Or blow it up. Or accidentally kill someone. "The only thing is, I uh...have no real idea how to deal with kids. Any advice?"

Kairos smiled and nodded his head as Ivory answered his questions. "That's good. I'm glad to hear you're both doing well." he said, taking another sip of his water. "Bryce is lucky to have someone like you looking out for him, y'know. Not everyone gets to have that growing up." he continued, though he paused and glanced away when they were joined by a couple of their guild mates, specifically Lot and Atticus, with the former carrying a piece of paper from the Job Board inside the Guild Hall.

"G'morning, guys." he said with a wave, listening in as Atticus asked Ivory for some advice on a mission involving children. "What do you think, Mom? Do you see our boy Atticus here being good with kids?" he asked in an amused tone.

After receiving her answer to his questions, Kairos explained that Bryce was lucky to have someone like her looking out for him and that not everyone gets to have their parents in their lives. "I wish I could be around more for the lil' fella," she added in a somber tone just as Lot and Atticus approached. Kairos said good morning to the duo before Atticus started up about the mission he had just accepted, explaining that it was a baby-sitting gig, something that, in Ivory's opinion, she never expected these two to go for, considering their young age. Atticus asked if she had any pointers she could offer that might give them an idea of what to do. Kairos chimed in as he finished speaking, asking her what she thought about Atticus looking after children.

"Well, first things first, doll, we're gonna have to drop this 'missus' nonsence. You're makin' me feel old," she explained with a chuckle. "Just 'Ivory' will do from now on," she added, crossing her legs and finishing off her glass of water. "Don't you think it'd be easier if you just asked me if I wanted to go along and help out? Little ones can be quite unpredictable after all," the woman responded, looking at Lot and then Atticus. "I don't got much goin' on today, so I can't really say 'no', now can I?"

"Would you please come with us?!" Lot blurted as soon as the woman finished speaking. It was impossible to mask the joy in his face. "I mean, we'll probably need these skills one day and you're a pro, right?" Laughing the teen pointed back at the guild hall with his thumb. "Kaze is coming. Why don't you come along, too, Kairos? We can all learn how to be a mommy." He chuckled.

"Good morning, Kairos." Atticus returned, though when the Dragon Slayer teased a bit about their choice of job the younger mage averted his eyes and used one hand to adjust his glasses, conveniently hiding his nervous expression.

"Well, first things first, doll, we're gonna have to drop this 'missus' nonsence. You're makin' me feel old," Ivory explained with a chuckle. "Just 'Ivory' will do from now on," she added, lifting her cup to her lips as she crossed her legs. Atticus gulped audibly and tried not to stare too hard at the hem of her skirt as her thighs moved. As she finished her drink, the Crash mage managed to focus on her lips--her face. "Don't you think it'd be easier if you just asked me if I wanted to go along and help out? Little ones can be quite unpredictable after all," the woman responded, looking at Lot and then Atticus. "I don't got much goin' on today, so I can't really say 'no', now can I?"

"Well, if you--" Atticus began.

"...Lot, come on man." Atticus sighed and rubbed one side of his head with an exasperated expression. For one thing you're making us look desperate, for another shouldn't we be learning how to be fathers? "But he's right, Ms--uh, I-Ivory. You'd be a great help." Then the boy looked over at Kairos, brows tilting thoughtfully. "And I mean...if you wanna come too, Kairos, I guess it'd be alright. Five seems like overkill...then again..."

He took the flyer from Lot and held it up so that the librarian and the Dragon Slayer could see what was written there, as well as the difficulty rating.

"Some of this is kind of fishy, especially this three star ranking. Usually something like that involves clearing dangerous ruins or caves, or taking on tough opponents. But this mission sounds like a one-star thing to me, along the lines of gathering herbs or finding a lost pet. Anything on the flyer stand out to either of you?"

Ivory knew about dealing with children, maybe the comment about the child's teething and the way it seemed to make a discrepancy with the rest of the flyer would tell her more than it did Atticus. Or maybe Kairos's experience with more combat-oriented quests would help him pick out just what was so dangerous about it. Either way, Atticus couldn't shake a slightly bad feeling about it--the whole point of this was to find himself an easy mission that wouldn't put other people around him at risk. If he was baby sitting, then he hopefully wouldn't even need to use his magic. Of course...now that Lot, and then Kaze, had thrown their lot in, he felt kind of pressured to see it through despite all his misgivings. He already felt like a coward all the time because he tried so hard to avoid confrontational jobs, compared to everyone else who went freely on all kinds of wacky adventures. If he walked away from something as simple as looking after someone else's kid for a few hours, he had a feeling he might never live it down.

[[No checks have to be involved, just whatever in-character speculation or information you feel like you've gleaned from the mission description. If you DO want to make some kind of check to analyze the flyer, identify some of the details like geography or history, rumors, (see the Mission Board topic for stuff like Location and whatnot), etc, just let me know.]]

Kaze gave Lot a dull look, the kid was to led by his hormones and it showed. Badly. "Keep it in your pants, boy." He ground out, annoyed with the youths antics. Atticus mentioned teething which got him to look at the flier copy once more. "Teething...but plays games inappropriate for her age? One sounds like a toddler and the other sounds like a horny teenager..." He muttered while he followed the two out of the building.

Already Lot was acting the foolish horny teen. "I already have a clue on how to be a parent. I'd just be a terrible one." He said while continuously rereading the job flier. The more he reread it the more he didn't like it. He was sorely tempted to go to the guild leader about it but there was more than enough people for the quest. Atticus, Lot, Ivory, himself, and Kairos if he decided to come along.

"If we're all going on this, best keep an eye out. Atticus has a feeling it's off and I'm not so comfortable with it myself. Could be over-protective parents but doesn't really feel that way." He stated while folding up the flier copy and tucking it away in a pocket.

"I'm sure he understands that while you're not always there, you're still doing what's best for him in the long run." Kairos replied with a upbeat grin, hoping to cheer Ivory up. Turning his attention back to the others at that point, the Dragon Slayer tilted his head as Lot excitedly blurted out a request for Ivory to come along with them, before extending the request to him as well, then shrugged his shoulders. "Well, I mean, I guess I could come along. But five does seem like a lot for a job this simple..."

Atticus shared a similar sentiment, at least at first, then he showed them the request for the mission, and Kairos raised a brow at the difficulty rating. Three stars for a babysitting gig? That couldn't be right. But that was what the paper said, and he shook his head as he was asked if anything seemed off about it. "I don't see anything too suspicious, but if it really is a three-star ranked mission, I'd better come along, just to make sure no one gets hurt."

Ivory had barely finished speaking her mind before Lot blurted out a response, asking her if she'd go with them. He backpeddled a bit and specified that it might be good for them to learn parenting skills eventually. He also invited Kaze and Kairos along. Atticus shared the same opinion as Lot did and asked if she'd come along as well.

"Well now, I can't in good conscious say no to two handsome young gentlemen goin' way outta their way to invite me along, now can I?" Ivory responded with a giggle. "Consider me involved," she added with a wink.

Everyone seemed to have the same hold up regarding the actual task. Why was it supposedly of such a high level of difficulty that it required three stars on the Mission Board? Ivory knew how to deal with children and it was nowhere near difficult enough to garner such a rating. Maybe things weren't as they seemed... maybe it wasn't a simple child that they'd be looking after?

Kaze started up like old man river, trying to keep the younger members from the current company calm.

"Kaze, this don't sound like your kind of rumpus," Ivory started, standing up and placing a hand on her hip. "I'd pigeon hole'd ya as they type to ignore anything that doesn't promise violence," the woman continued with a chuckle. "Do I sense a change in the tides? Is our violent murder-monster ready to perhaps settle down and leave the messy stuff to the younglings?" she asked him sarcastically, placing both hands on her hips and leaning forward as if scolding a child.

"If we're all going on this, best keep an eye out. Atticus has a feeling it's off and I'm not so comfortable with it myself. Could be over-protective parents but doesn't really feel that way." Kaze stated after admonishing Lot. He had also stated he'd be a terrible parent, but Atticus didn't think he could make a comment on that without possibly pissing the Requip Mage off. Kairos raised a brow at the difficulty rating, and shook his head as he was asked if anything seemed off about it.

"I don't see anything too suspicious, but if it really is a three-star ranked mission, I'd better come along, just to make sure no one gets hurt."

"Well now, I can't in good conscious say no to two handsome young gentlemen goin' way outta their way to invite me along, now can I?" Ivory responded with a giggle. "Consider me involved," she added with a wink.

"Th-thanks, M...Ivory." Atticus managed, rubbing the back of his head nervously. "And you too, Kairos. You're right, if this is three star then it's not gonna be anything I've handled before, and I doubt Lot has ever been on one that high either."

Atticus politely looked away as his cheeks reddened--he was already a few inches taller than Ivory, and when she leaned over like that he had a...well, a pretty good view, considering the way she liked to wear those blouses. Knowing Lot was taller than himself, the Crash Mage also coughed nonchalantly before elbowing the Plant Wizard in the ribs before he had a chance to say something else inappropriate.

Assuming the group returned inside the Guild Hall to register their "team" for the mission, the typical bustle among the sturdy wooden tables and benches would slow for a moment. Several pairs of eyes turned as the five of them strode straight down the center aisle, questions clear on their faces. For Mages to form "teams" wasn't uncommon, especially for more difficult missions. But this particular group stood out for several reasons: Atticus and Lot, the two "little brothers" of the Guild, young but bursting with potential; Kairos, the mysterious Water Dragon Slayer, a rare type of wizard but a powerful combatant to be sure, with a past shrouded in mystery; Kaze, a rough-around-the-edges fellow who nonetheless was known as a combat specialist, even reflecting such in his magic as the Requip spells were more about choosing and using the right equipment for the job--he had to be able to fight with the weapons, not just summon them--and meeting any threat with the appropriate measures; and last but not least, Ivory the former librarian, a real head-turner not just because of her looks, but because with one of the shortest careers in the actual study of magic she already had such a grasp on the jack-of-all-trades, near-infinitely creative form of Solid Script. What in the world was a team like this gathering to take on? Monsters? Dark Wizards? An entire army of barbarians or bandits? Or maybe...

"...Babysitting?"

Lusine's sugary sweet voice held more than a tinge of disbelief as she looked over the flyer, then over the group.

"I suppose you can take as many party members as you would like..." she said, giving the group a soft smile with an undercurrent of concern, "Just be aware that the reward will be split among you all equally, and that's still after all the Guild fees are taken care of...I'm afraid it might not end up being very lucrative." Furrowing her brow and pursing her lips in an adorable pout, however, she too tapped the three-star rating. "But maybe you have the right idea anyway, sweethearts. Why in the world would Father have marked this mission to be so difficult?" She looked up to the second floor, but now the trail of pipe smoke had disappeared, and the Guild Master's office was closed. Was he gone, or just busy with something at the moment?

"Well, good luck everyone!" The S-Rank stamped the flyer, then slid a fresh copy back to Atticus while she put their original in a stack of paperwork next to her. "And here's the directions to the meeting point..."

TO THE VRYKOLAKAS MANOR

The target of the quest was a large manor house, located a fair distance to the south of Orchid Town. It seemed this family, the Vrykolakas, were quite wealthy (though how wasn't clear exactly; were they nobility? Merchants?) and owned a good deal of land in addition to their home, making it less of a simple residence and more of a properly impressive estate. To get there, the party would need to traverse the open fields in the immediate area around Orchid Town, make their way into the hardwood forests at the foot of the southern mountains, and keep going up until the slopes were just above being called a hill but just below qualifying as cliffs. Here, at the top of one such sloping, winding road, where the grassy meadow at the top granted an excellent view of the treetops and the distant Orchid Town from one side, and a majestic glimpse of the tall, blue-misted mountains from the other, would be the manor.

But the family had, for some reason, requested that whoever accepted their job not show up until night had fallen. Though the trip would take a good while by foot, and even still about an hour or so if the group were to use a magic-fueled cart or some other form of transportation, the party still had quite some time until they actually had to leave. No doubt they would make preparations before meeting again to set out on their Quest...

SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES FOR PLAYERS UNFAMILIAR WITH MAKING CHECKS

[[You could make a Knowledge/Investigation/Whatever Check to find out about one subject regarding this mission: the Location of Vrykolakas Manor; the History of Vrykolakas Manor; the Rumors surrounding the Vrykolakas Family; the Environment (monsters etc) around Vrykolakas Manor; Local Legends (Includes Orchid Town and surrounding locations); Other (be specific about what you want to attempt finding out).]]

[[You could try to Track down the Guild Master to see if he can provide further information about the Quest. An actual Tracking check using WIS, or Investigation (asking Lusine about her father) could be used here.]]

[[In regular DnD, you could spend gold at stores to buy things like torches, rope, etc, but because currency and equipment aren't really a thing right now I'm gonna say you'll make either an INT check--if you want items that would fit the logical needs of the environment--or a WIS check if you'd like to focus on items that would be the most useful in a given pinch. Depending on these checks, your character might make a run to their house to grab an extra bundle of rope, or they might make a quick clip down to a store and buy a full camping kit or something.]]

[[And of course, you could just interact with people until you all feel like moving on.]]

Kaze blinked while looking at Ivory as she spoke. Her and her weird dialect. Maybe it was a librarian thing? Or just the accent from her previous home town? He'd have to ask sometime when there weren't so many ears about. He didn't need Lot wailing about losing his 'mommy' to someone. Fucking horndog. Atticus was to scared of...everything, to make a confrontation about such things as well and Kairos probably wouldn't care.

"There's no tide changing. Lot is irresponsible and Atticus might die of fright if he gets bit by the kid." He was obviously teasing Atticus but completely serious about Lot. "I've done a bit of babysitting before I was a part of the Guild but that wasn't some nobles brat." Kaze continued while scratching his cheek. "Unfortunately there isn't always going to be butchery to be done and I gotta make money somehow without resorting to crime." He grumbled, he was basically widening his job skillset to encompass more than just killing everything that moved.

"Thank you so much, Ivory!" Lot cheered the woman. Before long, the group ventured into the guild hall to sign up for the quest. Lot took the rear, making sure he got a view of everyone going in. Inside, Lot wore the biggest grin.

"There's no tide changing. Lot is irresponsible and Atticus might die of fright if he gets bit by the kid."

"That's true! Especially the part about about Atticus crying."Lot laughed the insult away. He didn't know asking the most qualified mage for help was reckless. Then again, Kaze did have a reputation for being a bit of a neanderthal, so Lot didn't hold his opinion in high regard. Turning to his friend, Lot leaned in close and whispered. "He's already grumbling."

"Oh, I'm sure they'd be able to find something for ya if y'all asked them nicely," Ivory responded to Kaze's retort regarding wanting to diversify. "Just seems a lil' odd goin' from murder to matron. But, if turnin' over a new leaf is somethin' you wanna do, don't let lil' ol' me stop ya, doll," she finished, brandishing her pen and tome.

"Why don't y'all go get that stamped and I'll wait out here and scribble down some notes," the voluptuous woman proclaimed before taking a seat, crossing her legs again and making some notes in her tomb, notably the contents of the mission slip.

It seemed to be a bit of an odd location for a manor to be, considering how isolated the location seemed to be. Typically, people that lived in big fancy houses liked to show them off and you couldn't get much farther from that tradition sticking your house out in the middle of nowhere, hiding it away from the eyes of those below you. It was rare that Ivory was even vaguely cautious; standing back and playing it safe rarely led to any excitement after all. But still, something about this seemed off and maybe dabbling in a bit of research couldn't hurt.

Once she was done making her notes, she tucked her pen away and rummaged through the massive tomb she carried with her. She'd scribbled down so many different tidbits of information in this book over the years that she probably had a little bit of knowledge pertaining to everything hiding away in side. It was somewhat organized so she flipped to the area pertaining to the world around Orchid Town and attempted to use her gathered KNOWLEDGE in order to see if she'd stumbled across something about the Vrykolakas family at one point or another...

Once everything had been settled within the Guild Hall, Kairos came back outside and looked around. They still had some time to kill before they would need to leave for their mission, so he figured that he might as well find something useful to do in the meantime. So with that in mind, he decided to go and see if he could find anything that might be WISE to have down at the local shops.

"I'm not scared of the mission itself..." Atticus attempted to protest, but decided to let it die. He simply crossed his arms and exhaled with a "huff" out of his nose.

"Oh, I'm sure they'd be able to find something for ya if y'all asked them nicely," Ivory responded to Kaze's retort regarding wanting to diversify. "Just seems a lil' odd goin' from murder to matron. Atticus managed not to stare this time, and sat across from her with one hand on his chin while he looked with an intense focus at the ground. Much like Ivory, he had spent a great deal of time reading and learning and researching, and he felt like he had a fairly good memory. He closed his eyes and tried to recall anything he might know about the history surrounding the Vrykolakas name...

Atticus Knowledge (History) Check

+2 Bonus for in-character studies
+2 Bonus for INT modifier
Roll 1d20, result 5+4=9.

Atticus cannot remember anything specific enough about the Vrykolakas family except that they're fairly wealthy and have lived near Orchid Town for generations. Nothing that couldn't already be implied, and nothing of any real use.

Atticus huffed again and opened his eyes as he shook his head. Really, nothing? It must have been because most of the stuff he read had to do with the adventures of famous Mages and heroes, and with the fundamental properties of Magic and how to develop it. He looked around at the others and noticed that Kairos was heading off into town, probably to get some supplies.

"...Ms. Ivory, have you come up with anything?" he asked the librarian as she flipped through the pages of her tome. In referring to her as a teacher again, he'd already forgotten to leave off the "miss," but it was as much a habit of his upbringing and nature as anything else. He realized it a moment after he said it and blushed lightly while averting his eyes. He tried to hide it, as always, by pushing up his glasses.

Ivory took a few minutes to rummage through her tome, keeping her eyes peeled for anything pertaining to Vrykolakas Manor or the area around it. She eventually did find some tidbits of information and took some time to read through it before Atticus asked her if she'd found anything.

"I sure did, sweetheart," she responded with a wink. "Apparently, there's some rumblings around town here from a while ago that say the area 'round Vrykolakas Manor is cursed and to stay away durin' night time. I guess folk's 'round town didn't think it was the real deal 'till some of 'em came back and started tellin' stories about findin' animals and even monsters with all their blood sucked out... yuck," she explained, looking up from her book as she said the word 'yuck'.

Her eyes returned to the pages as she flipped around and found some more information...

"I guess some rascal named Allatius Vrykolakas went 'n made up a new magic style called Vampire Magic... he can use it to paralyze folks or just inflict pain without ever havin' to touch 'em... sounds useful," she exclaimed with a chuckle. "It also says here that whoever lives up there at the Vrykolakas Manor don't leave much but that a couple delivery men have said that the house don't have no kitchen... kinda makes ya wonder if they're just really inta take-out," she laughed again.

"Ah, there might be someone we can talk to," Ivory perked up. "Apparently there's a fellow who frequents the bars who claims he's done portraits for the family for years and it turns out it's always the same two people he's paintin'," she explained. "I wonder if that fellow's still around..."

She went back to the book for a few moments as her blue eyes scanned the pages. "I guess the Vrykolakas family's been keeping the area around their manor free of bandits and the like for quite some time, but that ain't much of a surprise. Finally, there's a bit about an orphanage in another town that was 'bout to call in a Mage Guild to do some work regarding a cursed child but someone from here adopted the lil' rascal and everything went back to normal... kinda ominous," Ivory explained before closing her book.

"That's all I got, love," she stated somewhat triumphantly. "I think it goes without sayin' that this ain't just a regular kid, if it's even a kid at all," Ivory spoke her opinion.

Why don't y'all go get that stamped and I'll wait out here and scribble down some notes," the voluptuous woman proclaimed before taking a seat and crossing her legs again

"Sure thing Ivory!" Lot answered before turning back towards the guild hall. Looking over his shoulder, the plant mage saw Atticus take a seat across from the older woman and gave his friend a wink of encouragement, but he had both his eyes shut. "I know that look." The teen said to himself. "You coming inside Kaze? Those two are trying to think!" He added before strolling inside.

Inside, the teen made his way towards the Job Board so he could snag an extra copy of the mission. Stealing a few extra minutes for himself, Lot wandered about the guild hall and made small talk with anyone left in the guild, mainly asking where the master had run off. After that proved fruitless, Lot took a seat at the end of the counter and hastily scribbled down the names of everyone taking the job in his chicken scratch. "We're going on an adventure!" the plant mage explained to Lusine when he was finished. Handing the flyer over, Lot rested on an Elbow. "All five of us."

"...Babysitting?" Lusine's sugary sweet voice held more than a tinge of disbelief as she looked over the flyer, then over the group.

"I suppose you can take as many party members as you would like..." she said, giving the group a soft smile with an undercurrent of concern, "Just be aware that the reward will be split among you all equally, and that's still after all the Guild fees are taken care of...I'm afraid it might not end up being very lucrative." "You're the best!" he thanked the woman, but instead of returning outside he remained in his seat. "Say, Lusine, did the master tell you where he went? Nobody else knows where he's at." Looking at the master's door, the mage gave a sigh.

After his dealings inside were complete, the mage returned to his comrades outside. "We're all set!" He announced, but Ivory and Atticus were already discussing something, and Lot only managed to catch the tail end. "Whoah, the flyer didn't say anything about cursed demon babies!"

Kaze raised an eyebrow slowly as Ivory spoke. "I did say without resorting to crime. Animals will eventually leave, bandits will eventually move or die out, monsters will go extinct or move to safer areas." He said while folding his arms across his chest. "My way of life will eventually become a thing of the past and there's no point to not start adapting sooner than later when I'm more set in my ways." Kaze continued on as Lot went in to get the job stamped.

Atticus and Ivory stayed outside to share thoughts and potentially brainstorm about the job. Or so it seemed to the large man. He left them to it, they'd share anything they could think of with the group on the way to the manor. He went to his room to scrounge up some potentially useful equipment. His room was an utter mess, stuffed full of gear and trophies he had acquired over the years of mercenary and guild work. "I really should tidy up...but fuck it." He muttered to himself as he looked for stuff.

(Rolling to find useful gear for the job)
