If we're looking at a January launch date for this, any chance we'll get other info, like maps or enemy NPCs or world lore or anything in this topic? Or are we just waiting for more character submissions and such? |

Name: Deaestra Vinheim Race: Celestial Celestials are known for their closeness to what would be considered a 'perfect' being. The men are tall with sculpted bodies and exponential muscle mass while the women are known for their flawless, doll-like bodies and angelic voices. Celestials are typically restricted to Wind or Light Brands but there have been rare instances where a Celestial was born with a Fire or Darkness Brand. Celestials can not possess an Aura. Health +2; Physical Strength +2; Physical Defense +2; Magical Strength +2 Age: 18 Gender: Female Theme: Inevitable Destiny More to come... Appearance: Height: 5'7" ♦ Weight: 104 lbs. ♦ Eyes: Violet Background: One of two maternal twin sisters who's Human mother died during child birth. Deaestra's father was a Celestial and an apathetic and uncaring one at that. When their mother died, their father simply left, leaving Deaestra and her sister Lieri behind. The two were raised by the midwife who had delivered them out of sympathy for their plight. The two remained with the midwife for a few years until she simply became too old to look after a pair of your girls. As such, both Deaestra and Lieri were given away to two different families and that was the last time Deaestra ever saw her sister. Deaestra ended up the daughter of a relatively well-off landowner with stakes in several different mining operations throughout the Frontier. When Kabelli Jo'urten and her corporation came along and began buying up properties or forcing the landowners to surrender what they had, Deaestra's father was caught in the path of her Enforcers and, not wanting to sell his land for pennies nor leave of his own accord, was killed. His wife was forced into the labour camps and Deaestra, when it was discovered that she was a Celestial, was taken in by the Enforcers and taught to fight. Celestial's keen understanding of magic and their control over Light made her a valuable asset that they keep under under control by telling her that she will one day see her sister again. Celestial Will (Control; Active; Rank 1) While her Rosary is circling her body, Deaestra can manipulate it however however she wishes. The Rosary can push, pull or strike targets as well as deflect or diminish physical attacks. Heaven's Affair (Control; Active; Rank 2) A simple healing spell, Deaestra can target a single alley in order to restore a small amount of health to them. This abilities costs very little and puts very little strain on the caster, allowing it to be cast rapidly and in succession.
Ultimates: Hall of Glass (Control/Defense; Active: Low Health; Rank 1) Deaestra's body acts as a nexus for her most powerful ability. A large, glowing white circular wall of light emanates from her body and slowly continues to grow. Allies blanketed by the light will have their bodies coated in a glass-like substance that will slightly heal their wounds and provide them with a shield that will completely dispel the effects of a single magic-based attack. Physical damage will break the shield. Enemies caught in the light will be blanketed in the same glass-like substance that will, over time, slow their movement until they come to a complete stop. It was getting pretty hype until your accident, I'm sure everybody understands. When you're back at 100% and feel like you can handle it just send Jaina, DS, and Persona another message. Me and Kaze I'm sure will be around as always, we can probably pull Onis in, and maybe since it's your RP Matt will show back up. And Yggy too. If anybody still has contact information for any of the other folks, like Link and Falco and some of the others from throughout the years, maybe drop them a line too. I'm thinking I'm going to revise the way that magic works to be less restrictive. I still want it to include some type of barrier so that every element won't be doing the same thing. I'm also thinking that I want to change up some of the characters, primarily the antagonists since I'm having a hard time coming up with organic reasons for them to do what they need to do. |

Maybe keep the idea that each Element has a Specialty, but allow them to use types of spells outside their Specialty just with a firmly established understanding that they won't be as great at it in the first place, and then maybe on top of that add a sort of compatibility system--not necessarily a strict "Water beats Fire" type thing, but something like a comparison of their effectiveness. For example, Fire is Focused on Damage. So let's say that Fire's COMPATIBILITY with Offensive, Damaging spells is 100%. Wind is Unfocused on Damage, it can DO damage but it's a secondary function. So let's say its offensive compatibility is 75%. Water and Earth don't have a Focus or an Unfocus on Damage, so they might have the lowest offensive compatibility at 50%. So all of them are "unrestricted," you can USE offensive spells with them. But if you make a Fire Ball, a Wind Blade, an Aqua Sphere, and a Rock Spear that are all 1st tier, beginner level spells, even though they can all do damage the Fire Ball and Wind Blade are going to be the best options. If you WANTED to, you could add another layer to this just to keep it from being too obvious all the time who's going to win in a direct clash of magics. For example, if Water has an advantage against Fire, then it increases Water's compatibility for that offensive spell. That Aqua Sphere might normally be only half as effective as the Fire Ball on a neutral target, but if the Aqua Sphere and the Fire Ball were to clash head on, Water would be doubly effective--thus boosting that 50% to 100%, and allowing it to cancel out the Fire Ball, or be just as effective against a Fire-based enemy or defense as a Fire Ball would be against a Neutral enemy or defense. For more information of what I'm kind of getting at with percentages and stuff, you could take a look at this: http://hunterxhunter.wikia.com/wiki/Nen#Nen_and_Individuality http://hunterxhunter.wikia.com/wiki/Nen#Quantification_of_Aura As for organic antagonists, sometimes the simplest reason for someone to do something is that they want to. Why do the Raiders in Fallout make everyone else's lives a living hell? Why do they steal food instead of farming it for themselves, why do they kill everyone they run across instead of trying to make alliances, why do they actively destroy what other people have built even if it means losing resources that could be valuable even to themselves? The simple answer at the heart of it is that they want to. They are legitimately so concerned with getting things their way, with having power over other people, with taking enjoyment from violence, with doing weird future-tech drugs and doing anything it takes to get more drugs, more booze, more anything they want, that they will fuck over ANY and EVERY one else if they think there's even a chance they'll get what they want out of it. Sometimes people are just evil. Can they still have a tragic backstory? Can they still be humanized? Sure. Not even the worst of the Raiders are usually JUST in it for the lolz or just to be evil bastards. At the end of the day, they live in a world where it's kill or be killed, and they choose to be the killers by any means necessary. Why would Kabelli use her company's wealth and power to hire mercenaries and bully people? Why would she steal land, or force people into slavery? Maybe she just wants money and power that badly. Maybe it brings her joy to watch people grovel. Maybe she thinks she's better than everyone else. At the end of the day, she just WANTS to bully people, steal land, enslave innocents, make booku money, have a different boytoy every night. That's just what she wants, whatever the reasoning behind it. There's also the fact that most criminals simply do not think like "normal" people. They don't see cause-and-effect, they see "feels good" and "feels bad." When the judge passes a sentence on them, they don't say "I am being punished because this society views what I did as wrong, so they're trying to enforce that belief on me and make me understand it and see from their point of view." Instead, they tend to feel something like "I am being discriminated against, this judge and this lawyer and these police don't like me, so they're trying to hurt me! They're trying to get back at me because they don't like me, or they're jealous of me, or they're mad at me!" They have very little impulse control and very little empathy for fellow human beings. The criminal sees something he wants, and someone he thinks doesn't deserve to have it, so he takes it. It makes him feel good to have it, so having it must be good, and getting it must have been the right thing to do. The policeman arrests him after he got the thing that made him feel good, and that feels bad. The police must be bad, the laws must be bad, because they make him feel bad and he doesn't like that. He hates the police, and he likes doing the things that made him feel good. He doesn't care about how the policeman, or the person he stole from, or anyone else feels. He's the only one that matters. Villains who are ultimately self centered and do everything for their own self interests can be complex. But don't try to use complexity to JUSTIFY a villain, cause if they were justified in what they did they'd be good guys, not bad guys.
Alistar actually seems to me like he'd be the easiest one to give a motivation to because his circumstances basically mimic your typical ghetto hoodrat you would see getting shot by cops on the news these days (with less mob lynching of the police officers for doing their actual jobs). "Alistar lived through a life of abuse from his alcoholic father and apathetic mother. He had two older siblings who endured the same and all three were very close because of their shared agony. Both of his brothers fell to illness when he was very young and his mother never truly accepted their deaths." An alcoholic and abusive father figure creates a lot of potential in Alistar's own life for violence. He has grown up seeing his father hit his brothers, himself, maybe his mother--therefore, that is natural to him. When you get angry, or you get drunk, you hit someone. When someone does something that pisses you off, or that breaks your rules, or that is just deemed stupid in your opinion, hitting them is the natural and sensible response. Or at least that's the one Alistar grew up with so that's what's most familiar to him. As he grew up he would eventually become the one who hits instead of getting hit. His gang buddies do something dumb? He smacks them upside the head. Someone steps on his toes at the local saloon? Ain't nothin' to run a bitch through. Someone actually pisses him off, challenges his authority over his underlings, etc? I imagine that would bring about some serious, drawn out wrath that isn't so much even about killing them as just making them suffer. That he has experienced loss of two brothers who were in the same situation as him, not just because they were violently killed or anything with cause-and-effect, but because of a seemingly random and uncontrollable illness, also creates a possibility that he would have a very specific understanding of life and fate: It's all chance. Not a single day is guaranteed to you, because at any moment, just out of the blue, something could happen. The only reason you're rich and I'm not is because we were born that way. The only reason you have friends and I don't is because it just happened that way. Everything is luck of the draw--so no one deserves anything, and the only way anyone can have anything is to take it for themselves. He doesn't have to feel bad for stealing, or fighting, or killing, cause that's just how it had to happen. The people he steals from, he doesn't care that they put in effort to obtain their valuables, he doesn't care that they think stealing is evil, because none of that matters. And there's no reason to think of the future--no reason to consider the consequences of his actions, to feel regret or guilt, to put himself in other people's shoes. Because your future is defined by your present, and your present is defined by the phrase "Shit Happens." "Being the only child in a miserable, abusive family, it didn't take Alistar long to run away from home. He lived on the streets for years, stealing in order to eat and running with gangs to protect himself. He quickly grew adept at this lifestyle and, finally having found something that he was good at, decided that it would be his way of life. He wasn't a leader or a particularly skilled tactical mind but his height made him intimidating and his skills with a sword helped to back it up. He became an enforcer and a renowned one at that." Only being good at making people afraid and hurting people, but having skill with a sword, implies a fair degree of natural physical talent not just with height or strength but with finesse and dexterity, since properly wielding a sword--especially a katana--isn't something just anyone can do even with some basic training. If this natural physical talent is one of the few things Alistar has that no one can take away from him, I bet he's proud of it. And if he's proud of it, having anyone threaten to take it away from him in some fashion is probably his berserk button. Someone else says they're better than me with a sword? Someone says they can take me in an arm wrestling competition? I'll fucking kill them! How dare they look down on me!? I'm gonna stomp their fucking head into the dirt until they admit that I'm better than them and they have to beg me to let them live! Someone who can see that pride, and manipulate it, would find Alistar very easy to direct as a force against their enemies. At the same time, Alistar would make for a very dangerous criminal, because any attempt at all to subdue him through physical force would be seen as an assault on his pride. More than likely the same could be said of any other gang's incursion onto his turf and other such things. "It wasn't until Kabelli Jo'urten arrived that he upped his game. She promised wealth and job security for anyone willing to work for her and her company and Alistar, along with many other gangs and groups of rogues and brigands quickly joined her. With a force of low-lifes and other dicey warriors at her beck and call, the mine mogul took the Frontier by storm and was able to quickly establish herself. With knowledge of the area given to Kabelli by those who now worked for her, there was little she couldn't achieve and Alistar made sure he stuck out among his compatriots..." I know if I was an evil thug working for someone as hot as Kabelli, I'd be trying to stand out from the crowd too. Whether it's for more money, to prove that he's the strongest and the best, or to get a li'l sum-sum, Alistar will likely be a very DRIVEN member of Kabelli's underlings. He would probably take initiative anywhere he could, even to the point of being rash or jumping the gun, going off half-cocked, etc unless Kabelli herself brought him to heel. For an enemy that simply requires physical force--run the homesteaders off the ranch, kill the monsters occupying the abandoned mine, put down those adventurers sticking their noses into things--he would likely be allowed to do as he wished. But when it came time for more subtlety, telling Alistar to lay off would probably wound his pride. He might end up doing something stupid or something that throws a wrench in carefully laid plans. If he just sits back and takes orders, though, he risks losing face and pride among his others--he beats them into submission, but they can see the way he squirms under the real boss's leash. If he can't obtain her favor through his own merit, he might be willing to sabotage other members of her posse so that they can't take any credit either. Of course, I'm just assuming all of this based on his short backstory. It is VERY possible I am completely wrong and my analysis is nothing but overthinking and navel gazing. But, maybe you could use this to come up with some more organic behaviors and reasons for him to do some of the things he does? Edited by Onime No Ryu, April 14, 2018, 3:04 pm.

I already had something in mind to replace my current magic system while still keeping each element unique on it's own. I wanted people to choose an element first and then make a character around that so it'll be something I stick to as far as a general mentality goes. The bit about Alistar helped a lot too, particularly because I hadn't thought all that much about it and certainly to the depth that you did. I had a general story and something of a drive to get him moving and motivated but your analysis certainly helped flesh things out considerably more than I had originally planned. Wanna do the other ones too? XD |

![]() "Persephone grew up in a rather average household. She was the fifth child and only daughter of a seamstress mother and a bounty-hunting father. Growing up in a household of primarily males turned her into an obvious tomboy. The girl was more interested in mud and guns than she was flowers and sewing and as such, took much more to her father than her mother. She was taught to fire a gun at an early age, a concept her father sold to her mother as a lesson in protecting herself. Still, it didn't take long for her to begin badgering her father to let her see what he did for work and it was even less time before he reluctantly agreed to let her tag along." I see two potential ways this could be taken in regards to her character at the moment. The first is that of the surface-level appearance, the bounty-hunting, gun-slinging gal with a zest for life and adventure. Raised among many males, the ideas of masculine activities--fighting, exploring, telling vulgar jokes, developing more physically demanding skills and taking the more active approach to solving problems--these things are what she is familiar with, what she grew up around. There might still be some feminine wiles under all the mud, and perhaps with a more active stance on things she'll be the more likely one to take initiative and flirt openly. But the second, while not exactly dark or tragic, is a little bit deeper than the first despite being by no means mutally exclusive with it. A girl raised in such a male dominated household, how has she felt likely being on the losing end of every physical contest, every wrestling match or game of tag? Does it spur her to be the best sharpshooter, where muscle doesn't matter? Does it spur her to try harder than anyone else? Aside from her mother, who does she have to share any possible interests in beautiful clothes, in cute make-up? Who can she go to when she has a crush on that other little boy from the schoolhouse? Who can she talk to about the troubles of the heart her mother just doesn't understand? What kind of girl can she be, what kind of woman? Not to mention, the world of a bounty hunter is a cruel place. Are there any limits, or do you simply bring them in as long as the money is right, no matter the circumstances or how much they beg and plead, or how little evidence there is to convict them? Do you only shoot to kill in self defense? Is the dishonor of shooting first worth the risk of losing your life? Is it worth taking someone else's? Living on the razor's edge, facing every day knowing it could be your last, seems a terrible burden upon a young girl. Doubly so if she's also worrying about her father every day. Which face does she show? How much can the mask take before it cracks? "Even in her youth, Persephone was mesmerized by the world her father lived in. "Get the job done in as few bullets as possible" was what he always said and it stuck with her. If there were five targets, he shot five times and that was always enough to get the job done." Never waste a moment. Do nothing which has no use. Does that mean the same thing as "don't take risks?" Does it mean "Everything must be perfect?" Does it mean "Have enough bullets for every target?" Be prepared for anything and everything? Persephone likely wasn't as good as her father when she started. Did she know she would be able to live up to his words? Did she ever doubt herself? Did she ever encounter something that made her doubt HIM? "When she was only sixteen years old, Persephone left home, the last of her siblings to do so. When she was alone in the world by herself, she found it to be a much more unforgiving place and within a few months, joined the Hunter's Guild in Pangaea, the largest city on the frontier. Working alongside so many skilled bounty hunters and adventurers left their mark on her and the young woman quickly sharpened her shot and honed her skills, learning to do as much as possible with very little. A trusty revolver on her hip and the enthusiasm of a child, young Miss York set out into the world to leave her mark and make a name for herself." Stand out among all these others--to earn their respect? To win the competition of survival, because the losers starve? Or because they are the heroes that stand in the same place her father stood, walk the same path she desperately struggles to follow? Because she wants to leave them in her dust? To leave a mark, make a name...is it to not be forgotten, to not be unnoticed as the one little girl who couldn't hang with all the big boys? Is it to prove she can, to prove her gender means nothing? Or is it not only to be successful, but to be a successful woman? Persephone can be the simplest character, an adventurer ready to see and do everything there is to see and do, working to live up to a legacy she has always admired. But there are some depths here, some questions to be raised, and answering them could lead to some interesting possibilities that aren't usually addressed with the "tomboy" type of female gunslinger. "One of the newest members of the Hunter's Guild, Naeobe tries her best to pull her weight. She goes along for as many missions and tasks as she can and always makes sure to give it her all. When asked, it's unlikely that you'll get much out of Naeobe concerning her past; typically, a far-fetched story will be all you'll get." Hiding the past, and racing to build a future. Is it the lack of weight that drives her to pull so hard, discouraging words from others who are so much bigger? Or does she put forth so much effort because of an unseen, gigantic heart for others? Is it shame, fear, or something else that seals her lips about the years before? Is the far fetched story simply that, an imagination running wild? Or are there hidden grains of truth? "Lullim possess two different sets of ears. Elven-like ears on the side of their head are used just as regular ears would be. Animal-esque ears sit atop her head and allow her to hear aspects of nature such as animals and plant life. Due to their small size, Lullim will only sleep at elevated positions or areas with only one method of access in order to protect themselves from predators." Living in such a way no doubt has various effects on culture and behavior. Are those who are larger than the Lullim to be feared, or befriended? Does seeing the world from way down low cause one to look up towards the clouds, with all their silver lining, or can they only see all the refuse that falls from above? "Mister Grapes has been with Naeobe for many years. Lullim typically receive their familiars at the age of eight years. He can't speak at all yet but he has a very strong sense of what other people have in their hearts with a particular affinity toward detecting malice or malevolent intent. He also possesses the same determination for success as Naeobe does. If she's still fighting, then so is he!" My God, my eyes have been opened! I see the truth now! EVERYONE, LISTEN CLOSELY! MR. GRAPES IS ACTUALLY Ȁ̷͍̣͎͇̿ͩ̓ͫͤͤ͛̆̊̈́̑̂̃͊̽͐͌́̚ͅD̶̪̞̣͖͉̠̦̜͍̙̾̇̒́̃̌͝Ś̴ͭ͂̒̔̈́͠͏̴̠̟̩̲̬̰̻̠͕ͅL͈̜͚͖̯͈̹̤̙͍̔ͮ̃̿̅ͨ̽͗͞Ķ̢̢̺̘̞̥̓̆ͮͯ́̀͗͡ͅJ̧̘͖͎̗͕̖̦̤͖̰̦̯͎̮̦̯͕̱̾͌͌̎̌͊͋̾̀G̶̶̨̛̛̺̬̳̫͎͍͚̭͕ͭ̆ͤͪͤͥͥ͊̉̊̅ͯ̈͛̽F͈̤̺̬̜̝̺̫̲̹̫̘̺̫͔͆̾͗ͩ̈̕ͅÅ̓̆ͬ̐ͦͬ҉̸͏͚̟͖̻̭̩̣̤̭̟̼͚̫̥̫͢͜O̬̞͚͈̣̳̯̟͙̹͉̦͓̠̦̝̠̥̖͊̉̅͋̌ͯͪͥ͌ͤͯͫͯ̾̄͟͝F̸̷̪̝͈̼̳͉͖͇͚̠̣͎̬͍̩̈́̔̽ͮ̐̉͌͆́̊ͩ̐ͭ̈̑̓̓̃G̸̖̱͚̩͈͍̟̬ͬ͆̓̂̇̚̚H̡̰̺̫̳̗͚͍̼̹̦͌̽ͣͤ̿̎́X̴̢̬̬̮̗̪̘̗͕̥ͬ̎̋ͦ̇͛̆̽͞C̶̢̳̮̳͕̰̖̫̳̹͚̹̩̣̗̬͛ͦ͒ͨ́̂ͮͪ͛ͣ̎͋ͪ̄ͩ́ͦ͢L̄͆ͥͬ̓͛̋͘҉̧̛̬̲͎̳K̴̵̢̛̘͕̩͙͇̘̠̥͙̼͙̙̯̦ͩ̾ͦͬ̓̃ͭ́Ṉ̢̡͇̙̩͌̅̏̇̾̽̇̀̀̕A̛͇̙̠͖͖̹͙̹̫̜̺̫͎̼̼̅ͩ̉͛̆̓͒͌͟͜͟͡S̪̘͙̳͈̠̣͓ͦ͗ͮ̍͒̆̿ͯ́͢͠͠T̡̤̻̮̯͈̞̝̖̝͚ͨ̎ͭ̃̆͋́̋̀͜Gͣ̑̒̀̓͗̏ͮ̀̒̒ͣ̇́͒͊ͨ̿͞҉̺̟̩͕͓̘̫͕͙͕̻͖̕ ... What was I talking about? Meh. Anyway, I actually can't get much of a read on Naeobe because there's not a lot here. I assume we'll learn more of her as we go, since she's more of a side NPC than a main antagonist or Sin's player character. "One of two maternal twin sisters who's Human mother died during child birth. As such, both Deaestra and Lieri were given away to two different families and that was the last time Deaestra ever saw her sister." It's odd that this caring midwife, who was willing to take in two children with no one else to help her when she was already advanced in age, would do something so callous as split up two girls who have only ever had each other. In fact, it's almost suspicious, given what happens later with Kabelli's method of keeping her under thumb. Though they were likely too young to remember their original parents, has Deaestra grown up with the belief that bonds between people are unreliable or weak, save for the one who never betrayed or left her until they were forcibly separated? "Deaestra ended up the daughter of a relatively well-off landowner with stakes in several different mining operations throughout the Frontier. Celestial's keen understanding of magic and their control over Light made her a valuable asset that they keep under under control by telling her that she will one day see her sister again." Are there any societal or cultural implications attached to hybrids between the races? Are they despised, valued, etc? Why would such a wealthy land owner adopt, rather than sire his own heir? Or was there perhaps some sort of plan there? Did he already have children, maybe a son who needed a wife, and not just one of these podunk town girls from the pig farms or a wench from the saloons? Why believe that her sister is even within Kabelli's clutches? What have they done to convince her, and how long could it last? Much like Naeobe, it's hard to get a read on Deaestra's actual character, but her backstory has a lot of bits that could be fleshed out in various ways to make some pretty interesting side stories, or to tie into the central plot depending on how important Celestials are and things like that.
