Lord of the Octoroks, all hail!
So I got an idea the other day while playing some Final Fantasy games and watching JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. In the Final Fantasy Tactics Advance games, the protagonists live in a modern-era town called St. Ivalice, and they find a magic book which either transports them to the world of Ivalice or transforms their world into a version of Ivalice, which is your usual ultra-high-fantasy magitech setting.

But I was wondering what would a story that takes place in St. Ivalice would look like, so I came up with the idea that the magic book instead of transporting the characters to another world or transforming their world, instead brings elements from the fantastic Ivalice to the real-world St. Ivalice. These would be the monsters, straight from classical Final Fantasy bestiary, which would be bound to everyday citizens of St. Ivalice to use like summons (or Stands, or Servants). The plot would revolve about the mystery of the magic book, and villains using their monsters/summons/stands/servants for dastardly purposes.

So what do you guys think about the idea?

I'll be your Undertaker this evening
Is it exactly Ivalice--like an FFTA-based RP--or is it just the general idea of "Fantasy Elements begin to appear in an Urban City?" Cause I'm not familiar with the tactics spinoffs at all, but I could dig the general idea. It reminds me of that one RP you did a long time ago where characters developed powers after meeting the typical "sleeping girl in a box" and my character was a graffiti tagger who used different colored markers for elemental effects.

So, the Monsters become bound to the people like Stands, Servants, Personas, general summons? Do they fight for their masters more like straight up Pokemon, or empower the masters themselves to fight? Do they change into other forms or grow stronger over time, or, conversely, stay at the same level of power the whole time but rely on creative USE of those powers? Can the monsters exist without a host? Can a person capture or control more than one monster at a time? Are all the monsters living beings, or could they be weapons and other objects? How strong is the bond between master and monster, and how much does it matter--do you have to befriend them to unlock their true power, or dominate them to keep them from controlling you? Does killing the monster kill the user? Do they share senses? How much can the fantasy beings interact with the "real" world? Could conventional weaponry kill a monster?

EDIT: Also dibs on the most powerful version of Bahamut or whatever

The idea of using a town named St. Ivalice and using Final Fantasy creatures is so that it feels somewhat coherent, you wouldn't really need anything more than a passing knowledge on the monsters' canon abilities and such which would in any case be provided.

At first, characters would only be able to partially summon the creatures, like just an arm or wings, and thus the moveset would be limited. But as they gain more experience they would be able to fully summon them and use their wide range of abilities, eventually the creatures could gain additional abilities transform into more powerful versions of themselves; some would have more growing potential than others and so on. The versatility of their abilities would vary between each creature, but since this is an urban setting, most creatures would have different passive abilities that can work within the city. For example, Marlboros can cause a bunch of illnesses and stuff, Slime can absorb things and grow, Bomb causes things to explode and that's pretty straightforward, Lamia seduces people, Ghost can possess people, Ahriman is death and doom related abilities and curses, etc.

Only one creature per person, but if the host is killed the monster can find another one. I had thought of making the event that released the monsters have happened several years ago, so there are characters that would already be the "4th master of Marlboro" for example when the plot starts.

It depends on the monster, but most are "living" beings. They sometimes come with weapons.

I hadn't thought much about it, but I think the bond shouldn't matter that much. The book would give the characters their monsters depending on their personalities, kinda like how the Triforce choses hosts. They should be sentient and some are more intelligent than others, for example the main villains would have what would be the equivalent to bosses.

"Killing" the monster will kill the user, they share the same HP and MP bar in that sense. But technically the monster has more "reserve" HP which will use to survive and find another host. So USER and MONSTER have 25 HP shared between them, but an ENEMY depletes it all, the USER dies but without a host the MONSTER technically has 50 HP and only 25 HP has been depleted, so he survives and finds another host - in fact, it's more like the MONSTER leeches off the USER life and magic and is only forced to use its own if the host dies. I think the monsters should be visible and interact with normal things normally, just to mix things up a bit.
