In a Space Opera RP, how should characters fight against each other? The first option is 1v1, like it's done in a traditional fantasy setting, except with lightsabers and space science powers instead of magic I guess. ![]() The second is with Power Suits, which have life support systems for a variety of environments, and can be equipped with missiles and guns and all sort of tech. A "light" power suit suited for agile combat and stuff: ![]() A "heavy" power suit with more room for armor and weapons: ![]() Third option is with Mechs. Everyone already knows what they're about: ![]() Fourth option is with SPACESHIPS. ![]() |

Voted for mecha, but it would be interesting to see starships play a role as well. I've also got an absolute BOATLOAD of ideas for mecha designs and lore that I never got to implement back when I was running a GGG campaign, so if that's worth anything, I'd be glad to toss those into the ring. |

Slow and steady...

I voted for "Power Suits", but in all honesty, it wouldn't really matter. Mechs I find are too hard to describe unless you're using pictures. |

I would have to go with the basic powersuit as well. It gives a regular humanoid all the powers that we like to have (above average strength, jumping ability, power etc), it gives protection in space. It can (depending on setting, size etc) have a jet pack and it explains how we survive being shot. If you go with that route I would lean toward a little more futuristic and also include a barrier of some kind as well. It would let you have a good cushion of protection (say barriers before any visible damage is done), armor (which causes visible harm but not to the person inside) and lastly HP for the human(oid) in the armor when shit really hits the fan and this person is bleeding out from being shot in the stomach for the 7th time in one encounter. Hell just add a few nanobot like healers onto it to fix up physical injuries in the form of stimpacks or something and a few repair droids on the ship and our characters will be good to go in most situations. All the combat, the high flying neigh invincibility we enjoy and rarely the technical issues of "being stabbed in the side would actually kill you within a short period of time due to injuries to the kidneys" things popping up. |

I'd be good with big powersuits too. It's a good fit for a space-RP, and it could make for a cool military setting. |

Mechs are just bigger versions of powersuits but have the potential to be cooler so I vote for those. I'd be fine with powersuits too though. Is there a reason to have Lightsabers/Beamswords/etc beyond just giving people who like melee an option, though? I mean don't get me wrong I'm a super melee guy, but it's always seemed wierd to me how laser swords are ALWAYS an option despite laser GUNS doing the same thing from a distance, thus being inherently better from a military standpoint. I think Dune had a thing where close-range weapons were better at breaking through forcefields/shields or whatever for some reason, but other than that most of the time beam swords are just there to make it "swords and science" as opposed to "swords and sorcery." |

Usually melee beam weapons have greater intensity than ranged beam weapons because the energy isn't being projected as far, and depending on the setting may be more energy-efficient on top of that. Depending on the speed of combatants and the environment, it may also be easier to hit an opponent with a non-ranged weapon. That being said, 'cold' (i.e. physical) melee weapons are generally the better option in terms of ease-of-use and efficiency, but may lack the same penetration value against heavier armour. Do you fight with a beam sword against thick armour, or a cold sword against anti-beam coating? Therein lies the predicament. And what happens if the opponent has both? Well, presumably you'd wear down the coating with cold weapons, then finish them off with beams. But that requires a larger arsenal... Unless you combine weapons, but that generally makes them heavier and more expensive... And that's just the balance between plasma/laser beams and old-fashioned steel. Tossing other types of weapons and defences in there just makes things even trickier. tl;dr it's all about balance and the context beam melee options are put in as far as other commonplace weapon types go. |
