I'll be your Undertaker this evening
Hey guys. I've said before that I don't intend to run any RPs anymore and that I have more fun as a player, but this is just kind of an experiment I've always wanted to try. In our past discussions about making and finishing RPs and all that I've always been an advocate for short-story style adventures, and that's basically what this is. I just wanted to give us something to do until Sin's RP comes up. I don't intend to be super serious about this and I don't intend to make it a huge thing even if it's successful. I don't even intend to play in it myself. I'll be solely taking on the role of the game master/admin/whatever.

The story:
There had been news, gossip, and rumors for a while now about the orc raiders wandering the countryside. The guards were on alert, soldiers had been deployed on patrols in the wilderness, and citizens stayed in their homes after dark...save for you. For whatever reason, you found yourself traveling anyway. What were the chances?

Looking back on it now, you should have known something was off as soon as you heard the creaking from the woods. There hadn't been any bad storms recently, there was no reason that a tree should suddenly fall across the road up ahead of you and block the path. But rather than turn and run, instead you had paused in surprise, then approached to see if you could find a way over it or around it. That gave them enough time to get behind you, and the next thing you knew, you were waking up in this dingy cave with an aching headache.

The dirt beneath you is cold, but dry, and you can barely make out a large semicircular chamber with a low ceiling around you, barely lit by a smouldering torch mounted on a far-off wall. Between you and the dimming light source are the bars of your cell, sturdy hardwood branches lashed together with well-tied rope and drizzled with pitch. Not the best quality, but not something easily broken out of either.

You hear movement, and turn back towards the chamber. There are other figures here too, some just waking up like you, others sitting quietly, probably thinking about their chances of escape just as you were. Down the tunnels of the cave, you can hear the throaty growls of orc voices...

Objective: Escape the orc raiders!

Now, there are a couple of ways we could choose to do this.

My original idea was to just straight up do D&D. I found some things to help with character sheets, we'd use a random generator for dice rolls so we can see them before the actual post is completed (something you can't do with the code) and we'd just trust each other not to cheat horribly and ruin the fun.

If people don't wanna bother with all the specifics of D&D, we'd just make simplified characters with the stats for comparison, kinda like what Sin does with her stuff. No rolling, honor system, all that.

We could also scrap stats entirely and go pure honor system, if you guys want. Like I said, this is just for fun.

So, would anyone be interested in participating in this? It'd only last maybe a week or two at most I guess, and it's only intended as a time filler until Sin's RP is up. Feel free to test out characters or just goof around or whatever.

Which edition of D&D do you have in mind? If it's 3.5 (or something really similar like Pathfinder) I'll probably give it a shot if that option wins just to see if it goes better than the other tabletop games I've been in, since I've got some familiarity with that particular ruleset already.

The character creator helper thing I found is 4e I think, but I could probably find something for 3.5 or Pathfinder too. The thing is, I don't know too much about the rules myself and I was going to hand-wave some things as I thought necessary for the purpose of making it more enjoyable. Does it really matter much which version we use, if we choose to go that route?

If DnD does win I've messed around in 3.5 and 4e. I think I got the handbooks stowed away around this thing somewhere.

But I prefer the stats to compare with other peoples stats, and possibly ranks of whatever skills we have.

Depends on how different it is in practice and how much gets handwaved, I guess. Dunno much about 4e, so no idea how much reading and relearning'd be involved in getting a basic handle on that.

DND 5/Dnd Next might be a good option since it is designed to be sinplier and more streamlined. Also I'd be able to shoot you to a generator if you need it.

Well, although it was by literally one vote at the time of this post, it looks like the winning option was "Use Stats just for Comparison" so we'll go with that and just use some D&D stuff as a template. I'll get to working on the few things we'll need for this and sometime in the next few days we can get things started.

Here's a character sheet, lemme know if you feel like anything needs to be changed or added or whatever.

Code:

[b]Name:[/b]
[b]Gender:[/b]
[b]Race:[/b] Human, Elf, Dwarf, Halfling, the usual fantasy gamut. If you wanna try something outside these at least be reasonable, no fifty foot long 200 year old dragons or the like.
[b]Appearance:[/b] Keep 'er short but give us enough to go on at least with eyes, hair, face, etc that we can differentiate.
[b]Weapon:[/b] You won't have this or your armor until you get out of the cell, but put it here anyway.
[b]Armor:[/b]

[b]STATS:[/b] You get 28 points to spend as you will. This will definitely seem very low for anyone used to D&D cause normally you get those points on top of already having base stats of 8 or 10, but since it's just for comparison and I'll modify the enemies to be weaker too there shouldn't be a problem.
[b]STR[/b]ength - Physical power. Helps with Fortitude defense and moving/breaking objects like doors, puzzle blocks, etc.
[b]CON[/b]stitution - Health and stamina, basically HP. Also determines healing surges and helps with Fortitude.
[b]DEX[/b]terity - Measures hand-eye coordination, agility, reflexes, and balance. Helps with initiative, ranged attacks, sneaky stuff, and Reflex defense.
[b]INT[/b]elligence - Describes how well a character learns and reasons. Helps with magic, brainy stuff like puzzles and riddles, and Reflex defense.
[b]WIS[/b]dom - Measures your common sense, perception, self-discipline, and empathy. Helps with some forms of magic, brainy stuff, Will defense, and noticing things.
[b]CHA[/b]risma - Measures your force of personality, persuasiveness, and leadership. Helps with negotiation, Will defense, intimidation/seduction/bluffing and other such things.

[b]Skills/Spells:[/b]
#. Name of thing - Description of thing including what Stat it draws from. I trust you guys not to get ridiculous with this, remember you're basically level 1 newbs. Really newby newbs. Nooblets of the noobed degree.

Best to sleep on it.
Honestly, I feel like we should just have character sheets in general, for minor RPs like this when they come up. Perhaps we could use Onime's sheet for any other "intermission" RPs. I mean, once we're done with escaping orcs we could just import the characters and put them in a new scenario. I remember just suggesting a gladiator fight just for the sake of it at one point, so that could be a scenario.

Just me suggesting things, of course. Doubt that sudden jumping from one scenario to the next would actually form a coherent story either, hence intermission. And having universal characters for it too.

... Yeah.

Name: Drogo
Gender: Male
Race: Ogre
Appearance:
Being an ogre means you're a big person. Big and not quite that good looking. A heavy brow, wiry black hair, amber eyes, olive colored skin, small tusks, and a wide flat nose. To counteract the lack of nice features, he's big. Eight feet tall, muscular, with a reach greater than any humans.

Reference

Weapon:

  • Greathammer: A long haft, about five feet, with a solid block of iron on the end. Good smashin' tool. (STR +6)

  • Knife: A large and thick bladed knife, pretty much a shortsword for smaller people. A roughed up and jagged edge makes for more of a tearing than slicing weapon. (DEX +1)

Armor: Mismatched Hide: Strips and patches sewn crudely together of various animal hides. Thick, warm, and offers decent defense for something so crude. (Armor + 3)

STATS: You get 28 points to spend as you will.
STR - 10+5
CON - 6+2
DEX - 4-1
INT - 1
WIS - 6
CHA - 1

Skills/Spells:

  • 1. Smash (STR) - A straight up power attack. Best used on distracted opponents since it has quite the windup.

Pretty much every character sheet ever will start out with Name-Age-Gender, and Appearance and Backstory will usually be in there somewhere. Equipment and Fighting Style aren't always sure bets but it's good to have them written down anyway, and there's usually a section for skills/spells/etc. I omitted backstory here for time-saving sake and since it's not a full blown RP.

Also let's put a soft cap of about 3 or so on the skills/spells. If you wanna have more or less I won't really care unless it just puts you at way too much of an advantage.

Name: Vergil, the Heartless
Gender: Male
Race: High Elf
Appearance: Vergil is a fairly small and almost frail looking elf with short brown hair, with pale skin and a large black tattoo across his chest, shoulders, neck and stomach that creates an unique sealing spell using his own body as a conduit for magical power- thus allowing him to successfully conjure up otherworldly energies and form them into a material form. He usually wears a full black cloth outfit, with a larger than average black feathered cloak that keeps him warm even during the coldest of nights. At his side is a simple elven rapier, tucked into a white sash. While far from an imposing figure, Vergil is more than deserving of his reputation of being one of the ruling class.
Weapon: Elven Rapier: A simple rapier, that uses DEX to determine damage
Armor: Noble Clothes

STATS:
STR: 1
CON: 3 (4)
DEX: 6 (9)
INT: 9 (10)
WIS: 3
CHA: 8

Skills/Spells:
1. Arcane Might: INT Based: Vergil can, with moderate amounts of concentration, use his magical power rather than his martial abilities for mundane uses. Any skills, techniques or abilities that would require STR can be substituted with his INT score instead. However suffering any damage or shock will cause this ability to instantly fail, meaning that it has little to no application in direct combat situations as of now.
2. Summon Monster 1; Fiendish Ravens: INT Based: Using a short ritual (requiring one turn of preparation) to focus on his magic, Vergil can summon up to INT/3 otherworldly birds from the otherworld. Each Fiendish Raven is capable of fighting independently of Vergil’s command and can use finessed melee attacks, see through darkness and use the special move “smite good” once per encounter. All Fiendish Ravens can understand Abysmal.
Fiendish Raven

3. Sleep: CHA Based: Vergil is capable of casting a simple enchantment spell on a single target which instantly puts the target into a mystical sleep that can be broken from being harmed, allowed to awaken naturally or being awoken using magical means. If the spell proves inefficient, the target suffers no ill effect.

Tall, Lean muscled, scruffy looking individual with long, tied back light brown hair. Hasn't shaved for a good while or taken a bath for that matter.

Leather boots, chaps and tunic. Heavy-ish wool clothing underneath the leather apparel.

STR-4
CON-6 (+3)
DEX-10 (+2,+3)
INT-2
WIS-6
CHA-2

Quick Shots (lvl 2)- (DEX based) Camlin fires off three rapid shots from his bow, a very quick attack

Long shot- (DEX/WIS based) Camlin drops to one knee and takes his time aiming a shot, making sure it strikes an opponent in a weak spot

CQC- (DEX based) Abandoning his bow, Camlin will pull out his hunting knife and go toe to toe with his opponent

I'm working on some maps and we're still waiting on a few people, but here have these.

The stuff listed first is racial bonus stuff. The stuff about armor and weapons in () are bonuses, don't add them to your base stats, put them out to the side. Stuff after that concerns how you'll move on the map and other things.

Drogo

Vergil

Camlin

I'd say that we are about good to go with 4 given the small amount of stuff in the RP thus far. Realistically if someone else chooses to join they can easily jump in whenever they want since we are essentially escaping an orc raiding camp and probably destroying them, or recruiting them to our side, or something.

Name: Garvan
Gender: Male
Race: Half-Orc
Appearance: Garvan stands at 6'3”, a solid wall of muscle with gray-green skin, close-cropped black hair, dark yellow eyes, and a small pair of tusks protruding from a jutting lower jaw. He wears a priest's vestments, and a wooden symbol of a double-edged axe superimposed on a round shield hangs from his neck.
Weapon: Battleaxe, damage Str-based (+6 STR)
Armor: Leather armor, worn under vestments (+3 CON)

STATS:
STRength - 5 +2
CONstitution - 5
DEXterity - 3 +2
INTelligence - 4
WISdom - 6
CHArisma - 5

Skills/Spells:
Cure Light Wounds (Wis) – Heals a small amount of damage when used on a living target, deals a small amount when used on the undead.
Smite (Str) – By spending a turn in prayer to his god before attacking, Garvan can imbue a blow with divine power. This strike does additional damage equal to Str x2, but can only be used once per encounter.
Cause Fear (Cha) – Causes one weak enemy to flee in utter terror if their will fails them. Should they prove to be made of sterner stuff, they will be shaken, but able to stay and fight. Stronger opponents are entirely unaffected.

+2 STR OR +2 CON, your choice, but not both.
Battleaxe (+6 STR)
Armor (+3 CON)
Boosted resistance to disease, some environmental hazards, and hunger/thirst (Endurance)
Boosted ability to Intimidate. Again, not using rolls, but you'll have a better chance at it than others if you attempt it.

You can move up to 6 squares. You can attack anything adjacent to you.

Your spells can affect a target within 5 squares of you.

You can see in Low Light and Light.

Okay guys, I got the first map made, lemme whip up the topic and make the first post.

Armor:
Elven Tunic (Leather / fabric with gold trim)
Elven Mantle (Kneaded leather)

Statistics:
STR 1 (+)
Physical power. Helps with Fortitude defense and moving/breaking objects like doors, puzzle blocks, etc.
CON 3 (+)
Health and stamina, basically HP. Also determines healing surges and helps with Fortitude.
DEX 9 (+)

CHA 5 (+)
Measures your force of personality, persuasiveness, and leadership. Helps with negotiation, Will defense, intimidation/seduction/bluffing and other such things.

Skills/Spells:

  • Dusk - DEX
Gwynavere fires a magical arrow that after flying forward for a brief moment, will explode in the air and let forth a burst of bright light that can blind enemies. The light bursts in the same direction the arrow was flying in and will not affect anyone behind it's trajectory.
  • Earthbound - WIS
Gwynavere calls a number of vines from the ground beneath a target that can bind their arms and legs in place for a few seconds or until Gwynavere dispels the effect.
  • Heavenfall - DEX
Gwynavere overdraws her bow and let's loose an arrow that moves considerably faster than her typical shots. The arrow can pass through thin objects such as wood and smaller foes but can no yet puncture stone. Enemies struck by the arrow will be knocked to the ground (small, average size) or knocked back (large, huge size).

GWYNAVERE gets
+2 DEX
Boosted resistance to status effects (not doing sleep immunity cause why would a biological being not sleep)
Bonus on Listen, Search, and Spot checks. We're not rolling for these but if you're looking for something you're more likely to find it, basically.
Shortbow (+2 DEX) Must be used in both hands.
Dagger (+3 DEX) Can't be used with bow.
Armor (+3 CON, +1 DEX)

You can move up to 6 squares. When using the dagger, you can attack anything adjacent to you. When using the Shortbow you can attack anything within 8 squares of you. This also applies to your bow related abilities.

Your spell can affect targets within 5 squares of you.

You can see fine in Low Light and Light.

Cat-Eared Complex Blitzkreig from the South
A little late to the party, but I'd like to join in whenever there's an appropriate point to do so.

EDIT: Bonuses have been applied.

Name: Eran of Bell Arc
Gender: Male
Race: Human
Appearance: A slightly taller than average human with dirty-blonde hair, purple eyes, and a notably thin jawline. As with many humans from the north-east regions, he has fair skin and his muscle tone is slightly unbalanced, favouring his lower body through years of tramping through heavy snow.
Weapon: Large Gauntlet (+2 STR) and Parma Shield (+2 CON), both steel grey.
Armor: Strapped leather jacket and pants (+3 CON, +1 DEX), large feathered cap (single white feather), all marble-grey.

STATS:
STRength - 4 (+2)
CONstitution - 4 (+5)
DEXterity - 5 (+1)
INTelligence - 5
WISdom - 7
CHArisma - 5
MOVE - 6
Attack Range - 1
Spell Range - 5
Vision - You can see in Light. After 1 turn you can adjust to Low Light. While adjusting you're Blind, making your attacks less likely to hit and hindering your ability to dodge.

Skills/Spells:
1. Real Spectrum - (WIS) Enters a state in which the user can perceive 'absolute truth'. Note that this ability only opens up a larger range of sensory options; it does not make one's perceptions perfect. Things that do not exist (such as illusions or hallucinations) are wholly removed from one's sight, but things that do exist but are somehow concealed or usually undetectable (examples include invisible beings, energy flows, metaphysical distortions or infrared/ultraviolet spectrums) can be seen clearly.
Limitations: The user requires one turn after the turn of activation to adjust to sensory overload; they are not immobilised, but it is highly difficult to do anything without running into walls or the end of a sword.
Locked potential: At tier 2, the user can perceive lies (both spoken and written). At tier 3, the user can physically interact with creatures and objects that are usually intangible. At tier 4, the user becomes immune to psychosomantic effects (i.e. being physically affected by illusory 'creatures', placebos, empathic manipulation, etc).
2. Parry - (DEX) If performed successfully, blocks an incoming melee attack with the shield and counters with an unarmed melee strike (typically a rising knee, but headbutt or punch variants are also possible).
3. Stinger - (STR) Lunges 2 squares forward to deliver a powerful straight punch. This lunge is immune to attacks of opportunity and can be used after a move action (although the move action itself is not immune to attacks of opportunity, and move actions cannot be taken after the Stinger).
